Chapter 2
Chapter 2: Introducing Lucas Davenport
LUCAS
My phone buzzed interrupting me from the meeting that I was having with the share holders. I was frustrated because this piece of land and factory was what I had been vying to get all this while and now that I had finally gotten a chance to convince them, this happens.
My phone was placed on DND, so whoever was calling was definitely important.
"Excuse me!" I said to the shareholders as I dropped the file and reached for my phone before turning it on. It was a call from the hospital. My mum's hospital to be exact. I panicked, what could possibly be wrong this time.
"I'm sorry, I have to take this. It's important." I said to them already heading out of the conference room.
"You won't get another chance to impress us if you walk out that door." One of the aged shareholders Mr Wilson spoke from his chair. He was determined to make my life a living hell all because I rejected his daughter who had been chasing me since high school.
"With all due respect. I don't give a fuck about your opinion." I said resisting the urge to flip him off as I left the conference room knowing fully well that I had just lost all chances of gaining what I wanted.
The phone buzzed again as I picked it up and placed it on my ears.
"Please don't tell me it's bad news." I said quickly as her doctor Dr Gray spoke,
"I might have alarmed you with this sudden call without giving you a head up text message. No your mother is fine. She was involved in a car accident, the car sunk in the ocean but she is perfectly fine. She wants to see you." He said as panic, anger and relief flooded through my body all at once.
"I believe in miracles but how is that possible?" I asked shocked already headed for the elevator as I was determined to get there in time.
"The paramedics said someone dove in and saved her. But nobody knows the mysterious girl. Only your mum knows her name." He explained as I frowned.
Someone rescued the mother of the richest CEO in the city and left without demanding a reward. This was a first.
"I'm on my way. How is my mum doing?" I asked as the elevator doors opened and I rushed out, my driver already pulling the car in front of me as one of the bodyguards got out and opened the back door for me to enter.
"She is admitted in the hospital. Her injuries has been treated. I don't think it's any cause to fear but I'll like to keep a closer eye on her tonight. Is that alright with you?" He asked as I nodded my head.
"Sure Doc. You are the one with the degree here. Whatever you think it's best for her at this point. I only hope she doesn't use this as an excuse to pressure me into getting a wife." I grumbled as the doctor laughed.
"As your best friend talking now and not your family doctor. She doesn't need this as an excuse to pressure you. She will do it just for the sake she is breathing. Lucas, I almost died tonight and I never got to see my grandkids. You have to get married right now." Gray said as I rolled my eyes exasperated at him perfectly mimicking the voice and words that my mum would probably use.
"I should tell her I'm fucking gay then." I muttered in resignation as he replied,
"She sent you two gay stripper firefighter last month. You vomited your guts out. I don't think you can pull off being gay. Just get your ass here. I have to get back on work. Technically the nurses are supposed to make a call but I thought you deserved to hear this from me instead." He said as I smiled.
"Yeah, thanks. Gray. I'm almost ten minutes out. See you." I said ending the call as I shoved it down on my breast pocket as the bodyguard beside me handed me the tablet.
"Sir, I had taken the liberty to reschedule all your meetings tomorrow to Saturday. I believe you would be with Mrs Davenport all through tomorrow." Luke spoke as I took the tablet from his hands with a grateful smile.
"Yes, thank you Luke. I don't know what I would do without you honestly." I said as he rolled his eyes. Fine we had been friends since we were kids. I guess rolling his eyes is a subconscious thing when dealing with me..
"Die probably. We are at the hospital sir." He said getting out of the car as he held the door for me as I got out as well.
"Thank you. You can crash for the night. I don't know when I'll be done inside the hospital. " I said turning to face him as he shook his head.
"My job is only done when you are in bed for the day. I'm staying ." Luke persisted. There was no need arguing with him at all. His words were final and as my bodyguard he had the final say.
"Alright then, let's head in." I said as he walked in front of me as per his job opening the door for me as I walked through there. I didn't bother to go to the reception to ask for the room my mum was in.
Knowing Dr Gray, he probably kept her in her private suite that he reserved for her as a result of my mum's shenanigans to always insist on proving a point to me no matter what it takes.
We entered the elevator and Luke pressed the button for the suite as I looked at his jacket and saw that his weapons were still on him.
"You should hide those guns if you plan on entering inside. You know what my mum is like. She hates violence of any sorts unless she is dishing it out herself on me." I said as he suppressed a laugh and said,
"I'll hide it in Dr Gray office first. Then I'll come in." He said as I nodded my head agreeing with that solution.
