Chapter 3

Chapter 3: Miracle in the darkest of times

SOPHIA

Since my suicide attempt was interrupted and there was no chance of the cops leaving anytime soon I decided to head back to the broken down apartment that I lived in with my brother. I didn't want to commit suicide there by hanging because I didn't want to traumatize my brother when they tell him the truth of what happened to me. The ocean was what I wanted as my body would never wash up or it would be bloated by then and unable to be recognized.

The walk back home was tiring and I was very able to keep myself upright. Luckily the neighbors were all asleep so I didn't have an audience to welcome me when I got home. I slid in the lock after entering inside as I headed for the worn out mattress that was on the floor.

My phone was buried underneath it as I dug it out and saw the time.

2:24am.

There was two missed calls from the hospital and my heart started beating fast. I didn't know the reason for why they were calling.

Was it for more bad news?

Before I could even make up my mind on what to do. It seemed like it was already made up for me as my phone started ringing again and this time around it was the hospital calling.

Trembling, I picked the call as I cleared my throat trying to appear composed.

"Hello?!" I said as I waited for the news.

"Good morning Miss Lane. You have been a very tough person to get a hold of." The lady on the other side spoke as I tried to think of an excuse to give her aside the fact that I almost committed suicide.

"My dog....died." I trailed off feeling more foolish than ever.

"Oh I'm sorry for your loss. I understand the loss of a pet. But I'm hoping this call might brighten up your day....well night. I have good news for you." She said as my eyes widened in shock.

"Good news?! What news?!" I asked as I sat upright as she replied,

"Your brother woke up this night..midnight to be precise during the lightning Storm. It was a scare to be honest. But he is steady now. I have every reason to believe he will heal from this. And we have assigned the best doctor to him, Dr Gray Stone. Your brother is in best hands honestly." She said as tears rolled down my eyes.

"Oh my God. He is awake. I....I...this is good..I can't believe my ears." I said sobbing pathetically as I couldn't believe that I almost made my brother the only person left on this earth. I really thought he was going to die.

"Yes he is going to be fine. Take a breather. I would love to stay and comfort you but that's against policies. Are you going to be alright? " She asked her voice a bit kinder as I nodded my head before realizing that she couldn't see me.

"Yes, I am going to be just fine. I can't believe this. Thank you so much for this. I am on my way right now." I said scrambling to my feet.

"Are you sure? The roads are flooded and everywhere is cold and he is asleep now. He won't notice it if you don't come immediately." She advised as I shook my head.

"I couldn't sleep anyways and I rather be with him now..thank you but I am coming." I said as she sighed.

"Alright, I'll make an exception for you as this is lsst visiting hours but this is a special occasion. I'll let you in. Just get to the reception office when you arrive." She said as I nodded my head.

"I'm very happy this happened to you. It's truly a miracle." She said once more before she ended the call as I cried on my knees thanking God for not taking the only thing I had to live for in this earth.

"Thank you so much Lord. I'm going to work harder to clear his debt but thank you for making him wake up. It seemed stopping me at midnight by making me rescue that woman gave my brother another chance at life." I said wiping my tears as I tried to look more presentable.

I took a jacket and wore it on my gown that was almost drying on me and reached for a sandal that was worn out and wore it as well.

Packing my hair in a ponytail to stop it from covering my face, I used the edge of the jacket to dry my face as I looked at myself on the window.

Nodding my head I took my purse which contained some money from my last pay and made to leave.

The journey to the hospital went quickly this time around as there was no traffic and there was no invisible dread cloud on me this time around. I could even appreciate the beauty of the things that I hadn't taken notice of before.

When the taxi stopped in front of the hospital and I got out wanting to pay, the driver shook his head and said,

"You don't need to pay me. You seem to be going through a lot. This is the least I can do for you. Good luck." He said as I smiled and bowed my head to show my appreciation.

"Thank you so much sir. I promise to repay you soon." I said as he waved it off and said,

"It's not a competition dear. Go on in. I'm certain you want to be in there already. Hopefully I'll see you around." He said as he started his car and drove off leaving me behind as I smiled and wiped my face before heading inside the hospital.

There was no time to waste. My brother had been alone for a long time. He should not be alone now when I was here. Luckily it was the same nurse who had called me as she recognized me and sent me upstairs to his ward.
