Chapter 5
Chapter 5: It's a solution not a fairytale
LUCAS
As soon as I left the ward, I knew that I was in big shit. I had told my mum that there was a lady who was pregnant for me and I was ready to marry her. That wouldn't have been a problem unless for two issues.
One she didn't exist. And two, I was in a bind. I needed to get one tonight. My mum was getting released tomorrow and no doubt would be expecting one by tomorrow.
Well it wouldn't be an issue. I just had to find someone desperate enough to get married for money.
As I made my way to Dr Gray office to talk to him, I passed by the bursar office where I heard an ongoing conversation with a stranger.
"Please I'm begging for an extension. I know that you gave my brother the best doctor but I can't afford Dr Gray. Millionaires can't afford his treatment as well. Who do you think I am? I want to request for a ordinary doctor please." The lady said as I stopped. I had heard the name of my friend so I was interested in seeing what this was all about.
"You are very ungrateful. People would want to be in your shoes now requesting for Dr Gray and you are requesting he doesn't save your brother. Do you want him to die?" The bursar spoke as the lady shook her head.
"I'm saying I can't afford to pay him. He is expensive. I know I might sound like a bitch now but unless I sell my organs, I can't even pay half. What if he stops treatment half way. I need someone that I can plead with. A doctor..even the one who isn't fully qualified." The lady begged on her knees as the bursar seemed unwilling to change her mind.
"I won't put the life of your brother on the line because of your incompetence. I can arrange for a very long extension to be paid but I won't cancel his only chance of survival. My duty is to help save lives. And not risk it." She said as I decided to intervene.
"I'll pay for everything for her. " I said walking in as the bursar recognized me on sight as her eyes widened. The lady as well still on her knees turned to look at me but suspicion was spread across her face.
"Why? Who the hell are you?" She asked as the bursar reacted shocked.
"Miss Lane. How dare you speak like that to him? Do you know who he is?" The bursar spoke as Miss Lane looked back at her.
"If I did, I wouldn't have asked who the hell was he huh? Do you think I'll sell my body to you. Is this a joke? Do you know how expensive these treatments are? There is no way you don't need something in return?!" She yelled at me as I was taken back.
To be very honest, this wasn't what I was expecting. I was expecting some feet kissing, for her to throw herself on me but this was something else.
"Miss Lane, comport yourself this instant. You are in big financial debt. Do you think you can escape his wrath if he decides you have degraded his name and I intentions as well." She said as I turned to face the bursar.
"Give us some minutes to talk alone. I believe Miss Lane and I deserves to have a one on one conversation. Apologies for using your office." I said as she shook her head.
"Of course not. Do take your time." She said standing up as she left the office leaving us alone as she closed the door behind her for privacy reasons.
"You should probably get on your feet. Or I'll suspect you are kneeling for me now." I said to her as I made my way to the vacated chair and sat down as she sat down glaring at me with suspicion in her eyes.
"So what's your deal? If you are trying to do charity. You rather go public with an orphanage. I'm sure you will get admirers that way." She said as I chuckled.
"You do really got a cocky mouth on you. And here I thought you were ready to do anything. You were ready to grovel at her feet." I pointed out as she rolled her eyes, tears spilling out as she wiped it off quickly.
"I was not begging for money or someone to perform a miracle. I already have one tonight. I was begging to get Dr Gray removed from my brother's case." She said as I was truly impressed.
I have never seen anyone reject a whole well known doctor to save someone they cared about. Not even if money was the issue.
"And I believe money is your reason for that. Well I got a solution for you. Only catch, you sell yourself to me." I said as her eyes widened.
"Absolutely not." She said as she stood up from the chair and turned to leave.
"I suggest you change your answer. I can demand the life machine be plugged off from your brother this instant. After all you are trying to kill him by taking him off Dr Gray hands. I can help you hasten the process." I said as she stopped.
"You filthy monster." She spat out turning to face me as I shook my head.
"No, you are the monster. Anyone who is handed over to Dr Gray without asking the patient family first and without request means that the case is delicate and deadly. And they want the best for him. So nobody else can do what Dr Gray would do. So you are the monster here. Taking away your brothers only chance for survival for what? When I have seen people in your shoes sell their selves for drugs." I said as she clenched and unclenched her fist.
"What do you want from me?" She asked as I smirked.
“You need the money, and I need a wife to shut my grandmother up. We’re a perfect match—don’t overthink it.”
Sophia: “You really know how to sweep a girl off her feet. Where’s the romance?”
Lucas: “I’m offering a solution, not a fairy tale. Are you in or out?”
