Chapter 1 A ladder, not a mate

PROLOGUE

London belonged to no one, though four powers spent every waking century pretending otherwise.

The vampires ruled from their coven. Their estates and blood debts stretched into every court and council. Vampire law answered to strength, blood, and lineage alone. Mercy was treated as a language the coven had long since forgotten how to speak.

To the north of London lay two packs. The Northern and Southern Dominions. Both answered to a single throne. The Alpha of Alphas ruled the Dominions through fear, iron law, and a bloodline that bent to no one. But the South had never forgiven the North for claiming dominion over the wolves. They wanted their independence.

The witches, what remained of them, no longer ruled anything at all. Centuries of persecution had reduced their covens to secrets hidden behind ordinary faces. Their magic survived only because no one living remembered how much of it there once was to fear.

The last of the four powers were the Elves. Just like the others, they answered to no territory but their own. Their Queen sat as patron above every other species. She alone presided over the High Council that bound every warring house to an uneasy peace. She was the final word between one day of quiet and the next war. The position was elected every century, built on the promise of balance.

Holding it all together was a single treaty. Renewed once every fifty years in ink and blood. The only thing standing between an uneasy peace and open war. Each renewal came harder than the last. Every golden jubilee the treaty thread grew thinner. Everyone who signed it understood the truth no one said aloud. It was not a peace anyone believed in anymore. It was simply a war neither side felt ready to start first.

At the center of the four territories stood Thornewood Academy. Neutral ground built to suppress the magic of every species and force them to coexist. No ruling vampire or werewolf house had ever sent their children there. To them, needing Thornewood was to admit weakness. None of them could afford to be seen as weak.

The next treaty renewal was fast approaching.

Every house was plotting.

Every crown was planning.

But fate had plans of its own.

CHAPTER ONE

LYRA THORNE CHEN

The first thing I noticed when I stepped into the grand hall of the Silver Moon Plaza was the empty chair at the head table.

It stood beside my mother's, carefully arranged beneath the silver banners of House Thorne Chen, as though Alpha Vane had every intention of sitting there. He did not.

He had refused to attend his own daughter's engagement ceremony.

When I refused to sever my fated bond with Kaelen Aldric, a Beta's son, my father issued a final ultimatum. If I was going to humiliate our bloodline, I would not do it in our pack territory. He banished the ceremony to Norway, forcing it to be held near my school, and sent a council elder in his place. It was a clear message that he tolerated the alliance without ever blessing it.

Forcing my gaze away from the empty chair, I watched the technicians wrestle massive projector screens into place above the altar. The hall was filling up fast. The screens ensured the Alphas in the upper balconies would not miss a single moment of the ring exchange. Even my wolf, always restless on a night like this, had gone still under my skin.

The doors at the front of the plaza swung open, letting in a gust of freezing Norwegian air. My mother hurried inside, shaking the mist from her emerald dress.

"They are almost here," she said breathlessly, rushing over to me. "The High Council elders your father sent from London have arrived at the airport and are on their way. They insist on leaving immediately after you exchange rings so they can return for the treaty renewal preparations."

"Where is Kaelen?" she asked, checking her wristwatch.

"Upstairs," I replied, smoothing the silk of my ceremonial gown. "I will go get him."

Leaving her near the altar, I hurried up the grand staircase. Tonight, Kaelen and I were going to exchange rings, and immediately after, we were going to mark each other.

Approaching the suite we prepared for the engagement aftermath, a muffled sound drifted through the door. A low, breathless moan, followed by a woman's soft laugh.

My shoes skidded to a halt.

The heat radiating from the suite carried a devastating, unmistakable scent. Ava Christopher. My best friend. The girl who told me earlier today that she was going to see her parents before coming to the engagement hall.

"You should not be doing this," Ava whispered from the other side of the wood.

Kaelen chuckled, his voice rich and relaxed. "Why not? In an hour, I will be legally bound to her."

"What if someone hears?"

"Nobody will. They are all downstairs waiting for my rise to elite status."

The slack, uneasy feeling that had haunted my fated bond for three years suddenly made perfect sense. My wolf had not been warning me about Kaelen's lack of status. She had been warning me that I was sleeping next to a predator.

"What happens after you exchange rings and mark her?" Ava murmured.

"Nothing changes between us," Kaelen answered smoothly. "She becomes a Luna, I secure a Lord's seat on the Council, soon to become the second most revered wolf in the entire Dominion, and we keep right on going. Fate handed me a ladder, Ava. I am going to rewrite my family history with it, and I will do that without letting you go."

A lethal calm settled over my chest. I had not fought my father for a mate. I had fought for a parasite.

I could have opened that door.

I could have dragged them downstairs myself.

But anger was temporary. Evidence was permanent. I turned my back on the suite and walked straight back downstairs. I had a better plan.

My mother caught my arm the second I reached the bottom step.

"Lyra, what is it? You look..."

"I am fine," I lied smoothly, brushing past her. "Give me two minutes."

I stepped into a quiet alcove near the bar, took out my phone, and dialed the Plaza Manager. He answered on the second ring.

"Lady Lyra, is everything..."

"I need the security feed for the bedroom of VIP Suite Four," I commanded, keeping my voice level. "Send it to this phone immediately."

"My Lady, I apologize, but the bedroom lenses are strictly disabled upon check in for guest privacy. We cannot do that."

"I booked this entire floor. I am paying for this plaza. Override the privacy lock, turn the camera on right now, and send me the live capture."

The manager stammered. "Yes, My Lady. I will override the lock now."

The file arrived in about two minutes.

I watched enough to confirm what I already knew. Then I stopped. I did not need to see more. My mate and my best friend were inside my marking room, devouring themselves on my engagement night.

A wicked grin escaped my lips. I walked directly to the audiovisual booth tucked beneath the balcony and handed my phone to the lead technician.

"Take this phone. Play this video when I ask you to."

He took it, and I went back to my seat, signaling the bartender to pour a cup of wine for me.

I took the cup from her and sat down, sipping the wine slowly, watching everyone hurry about the hall preparations, knowing full well that all of it was about to be wasted.

An hour later, the orchestra swelled. The ballroom was packed with the elite of the Dominions. There were representatives of every pack present, and every student from my school.

Ava stood in the front row, looking gorgeous in her silver dress, offering me a beaming, flawless fake smile which I returned. Kaelen stood opposite me at the altar, looking every bit the devoted mate.

The High Council elder stepped forward, holding the silver engagement rings. Above him, the massive projector screens displayed the glowing crest of the ceremony.

"Tonight, before the Moon Goddess, we gather to witness the engagement of Lyra Thorne Chen and Kaelen Aldric," the Elder announced, his voice booming over the speakers. "Do you, Kaelen Aldric, accept this ring, and swear to mark and protect this woman for eternity?"

Kaelen smiled warmly, his eyes locking onto mine. "I do."

The Elder turned to me. "Lyra Thorne Chen. Do you accept this ring, and swear to mark this man and honor the bond for eternity?"

I looked at the boy I had burned my legacy for.

"No."

The orchestra abruptly stopped playing. A collective gasp rippled through the hundreds of wolves in the room.

The Elder blinked. "Lady Lyra, perhaps you misunderstood."

"I understood perfectly." I projected my voice so it bounced off the vaulted ceilings. I offered Kaelen a dangerous smile. "No."

My mother rushed forward, her face pale. "Lyra, what are you doing?"

"I went to war with my father for a mate, Mother," I said, my voice echoing in the dead silent hall. "Not a parasite."

Kaelen's face drained of color. "Lyra, what are you talking about? My love, please."

He reached for my hand.

I stepped into his space and backhanded him across the face with enough Alpha strength to crack his jaw. Kaelen spun and hit the floor, blood spraying from his lip.

The crowd erupted into shouts.

I did not look at him. I looked up at the AV booth in the balcony. The technician looked back at me.

"Play it."

The screen flickered above the altar.
