Chapter 8 You’re carrying my child
“I wonder how that tape got off the internet, I need to thank whoever saved me.” She uttered as she pulled herself to her room.
Naomi was seated on the dining table, when Benjamin walked in fuming.
He didn't respond to her greeting and just went upstairs, Naomi followed behind when she heard him mutter something about “the Bright family” calling them incompetent fools.
She stopped in her tracks, the name sounded familiar to her and her eyes widened. There was only one Bright Family, the family of Lucas Bright.
What did they do to warrant such an insult from this old hag she wondered.
“…don’t you dare cross me, Lucas. You think taking down a video which has nothing to do with you gives you leverage? Don’t forget who you’re dealing with. This isn’t over.”
Naomi’s blood ran cold, she covered her mouth to stop a gasp from escaping.
Mr. Lucas Bright was the one who took down the video? Why?
Her heart hammered in her rib cage violently. Why would he do that? She didn’t even know him… did she?
Benjamin slammed his phone down and cursed loudly.
“Lucas Bright…” she whispered to herself, sliding into the chair by her dresser. She pressed her palms against her face, trying to steady herself.
Why would a man like Lucas interfere in her mess? He had no ties to her, none that she knows of.
Or was he the man she…. No it can't be. She shrugged up the thought that creeped up in her mind.
Her phone buzzed suddenly, jolting her back to reality and she grabbed it, expecting another cruel text from Isabella or someone else as always, but it wasn’t. It was a notification from one of the gossip blogs she had avoided all day.
She clicked and the heading read “Mysterious Power Cleans Naomi Lee’s Scandal From the Internet Overnight.”
Her lips parted, and she kept reading further.
‘Sources speculate the Bright family’s hand in the sudden wipe, given their unmatched control in digital networks. No statement has been made…’
So it was true, Lucas is responsible for…
Before she could gather her thoughts, the door burst open. Benjamin stormed into her room without knocking, his face still vivid from anger.
“What are you hiding?” he demanded, eyes narrowing down at her phone.
Naomi stiffened. “I… nothing.”
“Nothing? Don’t play games with me. You think I don’t know you’ve been digging into what happened?” He quickly snatched the phone from her hands.
“Give it back!” She shot up in panic, surprised at her sudden boldness.
He scrolled through, sneering at the article. “Oh, so you know. Good. Then you’ll also know this isn’t your fairytale rescue. Bright or no Bright, you’re mine. If he thinks he can meddle in my marriage, then he’s going to get the biggest shock of his life. Nonsense!”
Naomi’s skin crawled up and she frowned in disgust at the possessive way he called her “mine.”
“Why do you hate him so much?” she asked carefully, her voice trembling. “What did Lucas Bright do to you? Besides, I barely even know the man.”
Benjamin’s eyes flashed, but he leaned in close, his breath hot. “You don’t need to know. You’re a woman and your only job is to keep quiet, spread your legs, and carry my name. The Brights…” He took a pause and laughed darkly. “The Brights think they can destroy me. But I’ll ruin them first.”
He threw the phone on the bed and stormed out, slamming the door behind him.
Naomi collapsed back onto the chair, sighing in slight relief.
It was very obvious he has beef with the Brights but why would the popular billionaire involve himself in her business.
She could barely sleep that night and by the next morning, she had decided to find a way to reach Lucas Bright.
Naomi pretended to comply with her new routine as Benjamin’s wife. She dressed up, ate breakfast quietly, and nodded when he barked instructions at her but her mind was elsewhere, planning.
When Benjamin finally left the house for a meeting, Naomi went into his study, her hands trembling. She could say this was the roughest risk she's taking for the first time in her life but she had to.
She scrolled through the call logs on his office line. Her heart skipped when she saw Bright Holdings. It was likely Lucas's number so she quickly scribbled it down before anybody walked in on her.
She shoved the note into her pocket and slipped out the same way she came in.
She barely made it back to her own room when the maid knocked. “Madam, sir asked that you not leave the house today.”
Naomi smiled faintly and replied. “Of course. I’ll stay, like I have anywhere else to be.”
Once she was sure the servant had left, she locked herself in her room, pulled out the note, and dialed the number.
It rang once then a male voice answered.
“Lucas Bright speaking.”
Naomi froze, she clutched the phone unable to speak.
“Hello?” From the other side, his tone was calm, but she could hear the weight of authority behind it. “Who is this?”
“It’s… Naomi. Naomi Woods. I mean… Naomi Lee.”
There was a pause followed by a slow inhale.
“I was wondering when you’d call,” Lucas said. His voice dropped lower, surprisingly reassuring. “At least that saves me the time of coming over.”
She took in a deep breath and pressed the phone tighter to her ear, her lips trembling.
“Why… Why did you help me?” she whispered but there was no response from him. “Saves you time? You wanted to see me?”
“You're carrying my child.”
It felt as if a bucket of ice was poured over the young lady “Sorry, what?” She asked after seconds of silence.
Beep. The line went dead and Naomi started panicking, she called back his line but he refused to pick.
She called three more times until the line got switched off.
