Chapter 5 Amber, Are You Stalking My Brother Now?
Feeling a shadow over her, Amber’s eyes flew open, directly settling on the man with photochromic glasses in front of her.
"Wearing photochromic glasses inside, really?"
The man ignored her and simply pushed a coffee mug toward her, his left brow perking up questioningly, “You’re back?”
She sat up properly and reached for the mug without responding.
As she did so, his eyes caught the fading handprint on her left cheek and his expression visibly darkened.
“Did he hit you?”
Taking a sip of the coffee, she exhaled tiredly and leaned back on the couch to stare up at him again.
The next second, her eyes swelled with tears and her lips quivered uncontrollably.
“I think he was cheating on me.”
It was his turn to go silent.
As the head of Smile Entertainment, he knew many things. And since Aaron Foster was in his line of work, he naturally knew a lot about him.
A soft-spoken man who was a magnet for women. Wherever he went, he attracted them all with his perceived poise and gentleness.
“Your father said to keep an eye on you.”
Wiping off her tears, she laughed. “Of course he did.”
She then threw back her head and returned to lamenting. “Three years being married, and not once did he touch me. Ezekiel, I think I’ve let my family down.”
Taking his seat beside her, the man glanced at her. “What will you do now?”
With her head still back, she sucked in her teeth.
“I made a deal with father. Not only did it not work out, he made me promise to divorce Aaron the minute he raised his hand on me.”
“But I can’t reach anyone on the phone. Not my parents nor my grandparents. Not even my siblings. Do you think they’ve caught me off?”
Hearing her, he suddenly recalled something, “I think it was a year ago that someone found their private cell numbers and leaked them online. With the whole world knowing their numbers, they had to switch to new ones.”
She blinked.
That made sense.
She clearly never got the new numbers since she cut off all ties with them, determined to live a normal life with Aaron.
What a waste. Three years of her life for a man who wasn’t worth it in the end. She should’ve listened to her father and just married a wealthy man.
Cheater or not, at least he would’ve been worth it in the end.
She bit down on her lower lip and sighed heavily.
Hearing her heavy sighs, Ezekiel Kent suddenly handed her a document, and she looked at it in surprise.
“Mr. Hargrove knew the marriage wouldn’t work out and said growing this company would be a good distraction for you and a reminder that you should never have tied yourself to a pauper like Aaron Foster in the first place. You know, I think we should go back to being married.”
He slid in the last sentence so smoothly it took her a few seconds to realize it didn’t fit in with the rest of his words.
Glancing at him, memory of the impulsive decision they made growing up seeped back into her consciousness.
At that time, she thought it would be nice to have a ‘Mrs.’ to her name. Her family didn’t see anything wrong with it since he was a childhood friend from an equally wealthy family.
But then life got busy, and along the way, they naturally divorced.
Not meeting her eyes, he slowly rubbed both palms together and continued, “You juggled two degrees and graduated top of your class in both.”
“Then you attended theater school, opened a fashion house, and went to great lengths to find a chef just so you could create that bestselling recipe.”
“Our families think this will be best for us and for you. Just until you adjust again to society, that is. So what do you say? Want to walk down to the precinct with me and become Mrs. Kent a second time?”
Meeting his stoic hazel eyes, she thought about it for a moment before agreeing.
So the duo went down to the precinct and tied the knot that same night.
As his assistant led her back to the car, the man stayed behind to speak with his lawyer.
“Hey.”
“Sir?”
“You know I have a heart disease?”
“Sir? I-I didn’t know that. Maybe you heard wrong because except for being asthmatic, your heart is completely healt…”
The lawyer was all smiles but stopped talking mid-sentence and hurriedly nodded when he raised his eyes to see Ezekiel leering at him. “Y-yes, sir. I know that.”
Thinning his lips, Ezekiel continued with a straight face, “Good. If the time ever comes when she wants a divorce, make sure she knows I have a very deadly heart condition and that I could die if I’m triggered by things like the mention of a divorce. I take it we understand each other?”
After getting the lawyer’s nod, he turned around and left.
While they headed back, his marital status online changed to ‘Married’, but it wasn’t until an hour later that someone noticed and the internet blew up.
The following day, Ezekiel left early to work while Amber had to go to the store to get new clothes.
He lived away from the main city, so it took her over thirty minutes to find a store.
Still wearing one of the cheap clothes she had, she went into the store.
After filling her basket, she turned to head to the front desk when a realization dawned on her.
She had no money.
Feeling the space between her eyes, she had just turned to leave the store when she collided with someone.
“Sorry.” She mumbled coherently and made to walk past them when someone suddenly stood in her way, her familiar voice blaring through the store the next second.
“Amber? What? Are you stalking my brother now?”
