Chapter 7 Madam, You Forgot This In The Car
Amber didn’t struggle under their grip. Instead, she turned to the attendants in annoyance.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
One of them immediately sneered. “Making certain you don’t leave this store with the clothing under your shirt!”
Amber’s eyes instantly dimmed and her brows furrowed slightly, “Does that mean you saw me hide something under my shirt?”
At that question, the attendants subconsciously glanced at Greta.
They didn’t know for certain, but they trusted this longtime customer.
Not only did she always buy clothes from them, she never purchased less than a dozen at once. To top it off, she tipped generously and never paid in installments.
A trustworthy customer like her wouldn’t just make a baseless accusation.
And Amber? She was the perfect profile of someone who would steal.
Even though they’d been taught not to judge based on their customers’ appearance, Amber’s appearance was too glaring to ignore.
Nothing about her attire dignified her to be in a store like theirs in the first place.
As they mulled over it inwardly, they failed to control their expressions as their face twisted in disgust, their conviction hardening that she must have stolen something.
Upon hearing Amber’s question, Greta scoffed, “I was your sister-in-law for three years, so I know how wretched you are.”
“You never worked while you were married to my brother, and you were too proud to ask him for money.”
“So unless you became wealthy overnight, there’s no reason for you to have put so many clothes in a cart, knowing full well you have no money.”
As soon as she finished speaking, the two attendants began praising her happily.
“Sister, you have such sharp eyes.”
“We were all so busy we failed to notice her sneaking around with clothes. Had she succeeded, we would’ve surely lost our jobs!”
Greta’s cheeks stretched into a broad grin and she basked in their praise with relish for a moment before she pointed at the bulge in Amber’s shirt.
“Go on. Pull your shirt and bring out the clothes or would you rather they help you with it?”
Amber furrowed her brows in confusion and slowly lowered her gaze to the so-called ‘bulge’.
Finally realizing what Greta was talking about, she nearly laughed in anger.
The bulge was only because her pants were loose at the waist. Since she rarely wore them out, she never bothered to buy a belt.
But today, it was the only thing she could wear to leave the house, so she tied it up at the waist. That tie was what caused the bulge.
Sighing softly, she tilted her head and stared at the attendants sternly. “Harassing me simply because she said I stole, do you think that’s appropriate?”
“You’re quite shameless, aren’t you?” one of them spat.
And the second hurriedly seconded, “It’s already come to this, yet you still claim you didn’t steal from us?”
Greta clicked her tongue, bobbing her head in agreement, “Exactly. What else could explain that bulge besides you hiding clothes under your shirt?”
Behind her, Sabrina finally deemed it time to step in and walked forward.
She took out some money from her purse and stretched it toward Amber with a straight face.
“Here. There’s no need to embarrass yourself any more than you already have. Pay for what you stole with this, buy a few more, and stop looking like a homeless beggar.”
Seeing this, the attendants silently exhaled in relief and released their grip on Amber.
Greta, however, scrunched up her nose in irritation and proceeded to leer at Amber who was yet to receive the ‘help’.
“Why help this ungrateful skank, Sabrina? Since she insists she didn’t steal, let the attendants pat her down. If she refuses, they’ll just call the police on her.”
Honestly, Sabrina liked the sound of that.
Aaron was already ashamed of Amber. If she ended up in prison and his competitors found out, his reputation would be at stake once they learned he was once married to her.
However… she couldn’t pass up this wonderful opportunity chance to humiliate Amber after the insult about her acting skill last night.
So she squeezed the money in her palm and threw it at Amber’s face.
Amber moved out of the way before it could hit her and scratched her jaw tiredly.
It was still so early in the morning, why did she have to meet these people?
“Think about it, Amber. This is such a small issue. Do you really want to go to prison over something so petty? Just pick up the money and head to the counter, okay?” Sabrina ignored Greta’s words and probed softly.
Following this, Amber raised her eyes to meet hers and immediately grimaced.
After what happened last night, she knew without a doubt this woman hated her.
Yet, she actually looked like she deeply cared about what would happen to her if the store attendants eventually called the police.
It wasn’t enough to win any awards, but it was just enough to fool everyone into thinking she was really being selfless in her offer.
But suddenly recalling she could end this in a jiffy, she reached to her waist and yanked up her shirt, exposing the tied-up pants.
The sight of the ugly knot rendered everyone watching the scene speechless.
Ignoring their reactions, Amber tilted her body to the side so the attendants, who held and accused her of stealing, could see it clearly.
“Do you see now what caused the bulge? My pants are loose and I don’t own a belt. So I tied them up myself and came quickly to buy new clothes.”
“Are you satisfied now that you’ve forced me to do something so humiliating just to prove I wasn’t stealing?”
Amber was eloquent.
She had to be given her parents had invested so much to make sure she got the best education.
So, genuinely provoked for the first time in three years, her sharp words and piercing gaze made everyone shift uncomfortably.
But as the attendants struggled with how to word their apology, Greta’s long hiss suddenly filled the air.
“So what? You came to buy clothes, but we saw you leaving the store with none. Do you expect us to believe you didn’t plan to steal from the start?”
Sabrina didn’t hesitate to agree.
“Yes, this isn’t some roadside stall. You were stalking us? We understand that much, but coming in here and putting these much clothes in your cart wasn’t for no reason.”
“For all we know, you must’ve decided to make a run for it when you spotted us coming.”
Amber went mute at the accusation because in reality, she really didn’t have a penny to her name, but she decided to come here instead of going to a roadside stall.
Anyone would be suspicious.
In the cases of these two, she knew they were just throwing wild accusations hoping it’d hit, but to everyone else here, that seemed to be the truth of this situation.
Biting her lower lip, she was fumbling for a response to counter them when suddenly, she felt a tap on her back.
Turning, her brows perked up in surprise at the sight of Ezekiel’s driver holding out a bank card toward her.
“Madam, you forgot this in the car.”
