Chapter 4: "Your Baby Is Gone!"
Emma's POV
Nancy's voice drilled into my ears, unbearably grating.
After a brief silence, Klaus's voice softened somewhat.
"Fine. Pack your things and move into Golden Moon Manor tomorrow."
Golden Moon Manor was our home!
A metallic taste surged up from my throat. I dug my nails hard into my palm.
"No!"
I screamed into the phone, my voice cracking with emotion.
"Klaus, that's our home! You can't..."
"Emma," Klaus cut me off with displeasure, "you have no right to tell me what to do."
"I'm giving you one week." He delivered his ultimatum, leaving no room for argument.
"Sign the divorce papers in one week. Until then, don't bother me again."
The phone was harshly disconnected.
I clutched the now-dark screen, my whole body going limp against the headboard.
"Emma? Emma, are you okay?"
Daisy's worried voice pulled me back from my thoughts. She looked at my deathly pale face, her eyes full of heartache.
"He's letting Nancy move into Golden Moon Manor." I murmured, my eyes hollow with despair.
"What am I supposed to do? Daisy, I might really never be able to go back."
Daisy hugged me tightly, patting my back consolingly.
"It's okay, Emma. You still have me! You can stay here as long as you want!"
I leaned on her shoulder, my body trembling uncontrollably.
What Klaus decided, no one could ever change.
If he said divorce, there would definitely be a divorce.
I had been clinging to one last pathetic hope, thinking Klaus might hesitate about the divorce given our year of marriage.
But that phone call had just thrown me into a bottomless abyss.
"Tell him!"
Daisy suddenly grabbed my shoulders, her eyes urgent and determined.
"Emma, tell Klaus the truth right now! You're pregnant, you're carrying his child! Even if he doesn't like you, it's still an alpha's bloodline! For the child's sake, he won't divorce you!"
My hand instinctively moved to my abdomen.
Use this not-yet-formed child to hold onto a man who no longer loved me?
"Daisy." I shook my head, my voice exhausted to the extreme.
"I don't want my child to be born as a tool to maintain a broken marriage."
"So you're just going to leave like this and fulfill Nancy's wish?" Daisy raised her voice in frustration.
"Emma, wake up! You're not alone anymore! You have to think about your child!"
"Without Klaus, how are you going to support a child? Go back to the Thorne family? Do you think Sally will allow you to divorce Klaus and raise the child alone?"
Her words struck precisely at my weak spot.
I could never go back to Golden Moon Manor, and even less could I return to the Thorne household.
A wave of bitterness washed over me.
When I was ten years old, I lost my memory and also lost my wolf.
I was told my biological parents were brutally killed in a riot.
Later, I was adopted by the Thorne family, but my adoptive parents weren't good to me.
In their eyes, I was just a stranger wasting their food.
Until I married Klaus.
He was the supreme Alpha, an existence all werewolves had to look up to.
From the day I became his wife, my adoptive parents' attitude toward me changed one hundred and eighty degrees.
They began showing concern for me, their faces plastered with hypocritical smiles.
Over these years, I had given them almost every penny Klaus gave me, just to buy that cheap, precarious semblance of family affection.
If they knew Klaus was divorcing me, that I, their ATM, was about to become useless...
They would definitely scold me harshly, call me worthless, and then mercilessly kick me out.
"Daisy, give me a little more time. Let me think it through."
I gripped the bedsheet, my knuckles white.
At least I still had seven days.
I stayed in the hospital for two full days.
Only after the doctor confirmed repeatedly that the fetus was completely stable did Daisy help me with the discharge procedures.
She drove me back to her apartment, a small two-bedroom that she had made very cozy.
"Emma, just stay here and rest. Don't think about anything. Taking care of the baby is what's most important."
She settled me in and poured me a glass of warm milk.
That evening, Daisy and I slept in the same bed.
Lying on the soft mattress, I couldn't feel sleepy at all.
I stared at the unfamiliar ceiling with open eyes, my mind completely blank.
Like an orphan abandoned by the world, I curled up under the blanket, letting myself be swallowed by the boundless darkness and cold.
I don't know how long it was before I finally drifted off into a hazy sleep.
I was holding an ultrasound report, standing before Klaus.
That thin piece of paper was crumpled from my grip.
"Klaus, look!"
I thrust the report in front of him, my voice carrying unconcealed hope: "I'm pregnant. It's your child."
Klaus looked down at the ultrasound, his face showing no joy, only vicious disgust.
"A child?" He laughed mockingly, a terrifying sound.
"Emma, a piece of trash like you thinks you deserve to have my child?"
His face became twisted and terrifying in my pupils.
The next second, he violently swung his hand, throwing me hard to the ground!
The back of my head slammed heavily against the floor. Stars burst in my vision.
"Klaus..."
I struggled to crawl up, but a high heel stepped on the back of my hand, grinding down hard.
It was Nancy.
She looked down at me from above, saying viciously.
"Emma, have you forgotten? You don't even have your own wolf. How could you possibly be pregnant with an Alpha's child?"
She bent down, her voice soft yet utterly cruel.
"Tell us, whose bastard is in your belly?"
Tears instantly flooded from my eyes as I shook my head desperately in explanation.
"He's Klaus's child! Really his child!"
"Shut up!" Klaus roared, roughly grabbing my wrist and yanking me up from the ground.
His strength was frightening, his fingers like iron clamps, almost crushing my bones.
"Emma, you disgust me!"
He dragged me toward the exit: "I'll take you to the hospital for an abortion right now!"
"No! Don't!"
I struggled like a madwoman, my feet kicking wildly on the ground, trying to break free from his grip.
"Klaus, believe me! He's your child! Please, don't hurt him!"
But he wouldn't listen.
In the chaotic struggle, my abdomen slammed hard against the sharp corner of a nearby table!
"Ah!"
A sharp pain suddenly shot through my belly, instantly spreading throughout my entire body!
The pain made everything go black. My body slid limply downward.
Sticky, warm liquid flowed out from between my legs again.
I looked down. Blood had already stained my white dress red.
My baby!
Nancy stood to the side, letting out a delighted laugh.
"Well, that's convenient. No need to go to the hospital now."
She looked excitedly at the blood on the floor: "Your baby is already gone!"
