Chapter 2
I thought I'd never see Nicholas again, but when I opened my eyes, I was floating inside an office at the Jackson Group headquarters.
Nicholas sat at his desk, his attention fixed on his computer screen.
I looked down at my unharmed hands and finally understood.
To confirm my suspicion, I walked up to him and tried to touch his face.
My hand passed straight through his cheek as if through empty air.
Nicholas showed no reaction and kept working, head bowed.
So it was true—I was now nothing but a wandering spirit.
With nothing better to do, I drifted around the office, killing time.
This place was filled with memories.
The plant in the corner was a gift from me. The photo frame on the bookshelf once held pictures of us together, though it now displayed a company award.
The scratch I'd left on the sofa was still there. I used to wait on that sofa for him to finish late nights, and I'd brought him lunch at that very desk.
Now, it was all in the past.
A knock came at the office door, and his assistant, Ryan Martin, walked in.
"Mr. Jackson, the nursery has been prepared according to your specifications, and all of Miss Rodriguez's clothing and jewelry have been retrieved," Ryan reported respectfully.
Nicholas gave a nod. "How is she doing?"
Ryan hesitated briefly. "Miss Rodriguez? She's shooting a new film nearby. She should be back tonight."
Nicholas's pen stilled. After a long moment, he nodded again.
Once personal matters were covered, Ryan moved on to work updates. Nicholas listened intently, occasionally asking for details.
Even as a spirit, I felt drawn to him.
Taking advantage of my invisibility, I moved closer and studied him carefully.
I had always believed our beginning was as beautiful as a fairy tale.
After college, I came to this bustling city alone. At a chance event, I met Nicholas.
He pursued me for two weeks. Moved by his devotion and tenderness, I quickly fell in love.
As we grew closer, Nicholas slowly reshaped my life.
He didn't like me appearing too much in public, so I narrowed my social circle. I wore the makeup he preferred, dressed in the styles he liked—I adjusted everything to his tastes.
Little by little, I had no friends or connections of my own left in Silverlight City. My whole world revolved around Nicholas.
But I didn't mind. I was just a soul starving for love, willing to do anything he asked.
Because I loved him, and I believed he loved me too.
Until I met Abigail.
