Chapter 11

Blood and Trust

Kyra’s POV

The forest swallowed us in shadows. Every branch, every root, seemed to lean in, waiting. My wrists ached where the chains dug into my skin, but I didn’t think about the pain. I only thought about Damon pressed against me, his steady presence grounding me, keeping my wolf in check even as the fear in the air coiled tighter.

We moved as one, slipping through the dense trees, careful not to make a sound. The forest floor was uneven, roots and rocks conspiring to trip us, but I didn’t falter. Damon’s hand found mine every step, warm and steady, and every time he squeezed, I felt my courage flare.

Behind us, the shadowed figure followed, moving faster than humanly possible, silent, relentless. Sparks of energy glinted through the trees every time it raised a hand, bending the light around it. Wolves trailed its steps, circling, waiting, dangerous and unpredictable—but even they seemed wary of the figure’s pull.

I swallowed hard. “Damon… it’s not just following us. It’s… testing us,” I whispered.

He didn’t look at me, his gaze locked ahead. “Then we pass its test,” he said. “Stay close. Don’t let go.”

I gritted my teeth. I wasn’t afraid of the figure. I was afraid of losing Damon. If it got him… I couldn’t survive. My wolf stirred beneath my skin, restless and roaring, matching his. Our connection flared, bright and untamed, a lifeline I clung to with every fiber of my being.

A branch snapped under my foot, and the figure paused, as if it had sensed the sound. Its glowing eyes pierced the darkness. The wolves shifted in the shadows, tense, waiting. I felt my pulse hammering against my ribs.

“Move,” Damon hissed, leaning close. His breath brushed my ear. “Now.”

We ran. Faster this time, slipping between trees, branches scraping our faces and tearing at our clothes. Sparks from its energy occasionally lit the forest, brief and harsh, revealing the wolves lurking in the shadows. One leapt from the underbrush, and I swung my arm instinctively, knocking it aside. My claws grazed its fur. It yelped but didn’t strike again.

Damon was beside me instantly, moving with me, pressing close, guiding me through the chaos. Our chains rattled, banging against our bodies, biting into our skin, but we didn’t care. Every moment we moved together, every heartbeat shared, our bond grew stronger. I felt it pulse through my chest, through my arms, through the connection of our wolves beneath the surface.

We reached a small clearing, barely wide enough to catch our breath. Damon pressed against me, arm wrapped around my shoulders, pulling me close. “We need to rest. Just a moment,” he said. His chest rose and fell in a steady rhythm, grounding me in a storm of fear and adrenaline.

I nodded, leaning into him. “It’s… I can feel it watching us,” I whispered. My voice trembled slightly, though my resolve didn’t. “It’s waiting, learning… like it knows everything about us already.”

Damon pressed his forehead to mine. “Then we’ll use that,” he said. “It may know our moves, but it doesn’t know what we’ll do together.”

I let out a shaky laugh, and for a moment, fear receded just enough for me to breathe. Our bond burned between us, bright and fierce. The chains around our wrists sang against the movement, but I didn’t care. I had Damon. That was enough. For now.

The silence was broken by a low growl, not from the wolves, but deeper, rolling through the forest. The ground trembled faintly. The figure emerged at the edge of the clearing, stepping slowly into the light, glowing energy rippling from its hands. It didn’t speak, but I felt its presence in my chest, in my bones, in my blood.

Damon stepped in front of me, shielding me instinctively. “Stay behind me,” he said, voice firm, unwavering. “Whatever happens, stay behind me.”

I wanted to protest, to fight beside him, but instinct told me to trust him. My wolf obeyed, curling tightly beneath my skin, coiled and ready, waiting for the signal.

The figure raised a hand. Sparks of light shot into the air, the glow shifting into sharp, irregular lines that cut through the shadows. The wolves crouched, growled, but did not move. I realized they were as much prisoners to its will as we were.

Damon reached for my hand, gripping it tightly. “Kyra… whatever it does, whatever it tries… trust me. You have to trust me now.”

I nodded, pressing closer. “Always,” I whispered.

The figure’s energy pulsed, sending a tremor through the clearing. I felt my stomach lurch, my knees threaten to buckle. Damon held me upright, chains rattling violently as the force pressed against us. Sparks flew from nearby fires, lighting the trees in brief, chaotic bursts.

Then the wolves attacked. Not at us, but at the figure. I blinked, confused. The massive pack leader roared, rushing forward, and the smaller wolves followed in a chaotic wave. The figure moved its hands, and they were thrown back, staggering, yelps and snarls ripping through the air.

Damon and I didn’t hesitate. We moved with the pack’s distraction, pressing toward the opposite edge of the clearing, chains biting, muscles screaming, lungs burning. Kyra’s wolf and mine answered each other perfectly, instincts in sync.

The figure shifted again, energy spiraling upward, and I knew it was preparing something worse, something more dangerous. We had only seconds.

I grabbed Kyra’s hand, pulling her closer. “We jump together. Now,” I hissed.

She pressed against me, chains rattling. “Always,” she whispered.

We leapt toward the edge of the clearing. Wolves scattered, yipping and growling. Sparks of energy hissed across the dirt and air. Our bodies hit the forest floor below, hard, sliding through leaves and debris. Chains cut deep, but we moved together, momentum carrying us through.

We came to a stop behind a cluster of trees. I pressed Kyra against me, arms wrapped tightly around her. “Are you hurt?” I asked, though I could see her grimace through the bruises already forming.

“I’ll survive,” she said, voice trembling, but fierce. “I have you.”

I felt her words in every part of me. My wolf coiled beneath my skin, my bond with her tighter than ever. Whatever this figure wanted, whatever its power, it had not broken us. Not yet.

A sharp sound cut the air. My heart leapt. The figure was moving again. Faster this time. Energy pulsed around it like a living storm. The wolves behind it hesitated, uncertain, and I realized it was summoning them, preparing a new attack.

I pressed Kyra closer. “We can’t fight them all here. We have to move. Now.”

She nodded, swallowing hard, and we began to run again, chains biting, bodies pressed together, hearts hammering. Sparks of energy traced the edges of the clearing, red light flickering across our bruised, bloodied skin.

Suddenly, the figure raised both hands. A pulse of light shot toward us, catching the trees and the wolves in a chaotic blaze of power. The air cracked, the forest floor shook. My chest hit the dirt, and I dragged Kyra with me. She gasped, pressed against me, her grip tight and unyielding.

When I looked up, I saw something that made my blood run cold. The figure wasn’t alone. Behind it, shadows moved, twisting, morphing. Shapes larger than wolves, darker than the night, and eyes that glimmered like fire in the dim light.

Damon swallowed hard beside me, jaw tight. “Kyra… we’re going to have to fight like never before.”

I nodded, gripping him, gripping my knife, and letting the fire of our bond flare. “Then we fight. Together.”

The shadows surged forward. The figure advanced. The forest seemed to bend around them, alive, chaotic, merciless.

And I knew, with every part of me, that nothing would ever be the same again.
