Chapter 20 – Fractured Shadows

Damon’s POV

The figure towered over us, its form twisting like smoke in the firelight. I could feel every muscle in Kyra’s body tense beside me, our bond screaming like a flare in the dark. The shadows had paused, almost reluctant to move, as if even they feared this presence.

I pressed close to her. “Listen. Don’t let it split us. Stay with me.”

Kyra nodded, jaw tight, eyes sharp. I could feel the pulse of her wolf beneath her skin, coiling, ready. Mine mirrored it instinctively. Together, we were a storm, even if we didn’t yet know how to strike.

The figure moved first, almost lazily, but the air itself shifted. Sparks erupted where the chains bit into our wrists. I shoved Kyra behind me instinctively as a shadow lunged from the side, teeth flashing. My fist met it mid-air, sending energy spiraling in a controlled explosion. It yelped and dissolved into nothingness.

“They’re testing us,” I said, teeth clenched. “Both of them.”

Kyra’s hands tightened around her knife. “Then we’ll make them pay for it.”

Another smaller shadow darted from the ridge, faster than anything I could track. Kyra lunged, knife flashing. Sparks licked the air as it struck, and the shadow stumbled back. But the figure didn’t flinch—it had no intention of fighting the smaller shapes. It was waiting for something, or someone.

And then I saw it—a faint shimmer at the edge of its form. Something moved within the figure, coiling, folding in on itself, energy vibrating like a cord ready to snap. My gut twisted. I recognized that pulse. I had seen it before, in fleeting moments I’d tried to forget. This wasn’t just power. This was control—pure, intelligent, dangerous.

“Kyra,” I hissed. “We can’t just fight shadows. We have to force it out, make it show its hand.”

Her eyes narrowed. “You mean draw it out ourselves? Are you insane?”

“No,” I said, voice low. “We survive together—or we die together. But we can’t wait for it to strike first.”

She nodded, tight-lipped. “Fine. But if we do this, you cover me.”

“Always,” I said, heart hammering.

We surged forward as one. I pushed against the closest shadow, energy flaring, forcing it back. Sparks caught the ridge and danced in the air like fireflies. Kyra pivoted, striking another with precision that made me growl in admiration—and relief.

Then it moved—finally. The tower of shadows coiled forward, limbs stretching and bending in impossible ways. Energy pulsed around it like a storm waiting to break. I felt my teeth grit as my wolf coiled beneath my skin. Kyra’s mirrored me, our bond tightening, flaring.

“Now,” I whispered.

Kyra lunged, knife striking the figure’s outer shimmer. Sparks exploded, heat licking our skin. The smaller shadows screamed and scattered, but the big one didn’t flinch. Instead, it responded, energy folding around its body, forming tendrils that lashed outward.

I blocked one with my shoulder, teeth gritting, as sparks scorched the ridge. Chains cut deep. Pain burned sharp, but instinct and bond carried me. Kyra was beside me, moving in sync, knife flashing, energy spiraling from her as she forced the figure to shift.

And then I saw it—another layer. A second presence nested inside the first. Smaller, but sharper, moving faster than I could track. It wasn’t a shadow, exactly, more like a shard of intelligence, something alive in a way that didn’t belong. My gut twisted with recognition. I had seen that pulse before, in dreams I had tried to forget, in moments that should have been nothing.

“Kyra… it’s inside,” I growled. “There’s more than one. We need to isolate it.”

Her hands trembled slightly, but her eyes never wavered. “How?”

I pressed my forehead to hers briefly. “Trust me. You’re the bait—I’ll hold the main one.”

She swallowed and nodded. “Always.”

The second presence shifted, coiling like a snake, and then lunged. Sparks hissed where my fist met it, and the energy rebounded, throwing both of us back a step. My wolf screamed inside me, coiling tight, ready to strike again.

“Kyra!” I shouted. “Now!”

She surged forward, knife flashing, energy flaring around her. The smaller presence recoiled, forced to reveal itself in the open. I slammed into the main figure, fists exploding outward. Sparks erupted, heat licking our skin, shadows twisting, yelping, disintegrating..

For a moment, it worked. The figure faltered, splitting its attention. But then a low growl rolled through the ridge—a sound so deep it vibrated in my chest. The shadows paused. The figure reassembled, more patient, more deliberate.

And then the impossible happened.

The ridge beneath us gave way. Rocks tumbled, sparks flying. Kyra’s chains dug deeper into her skin as she slid toward the edge. I lunged, catching her arm. My heart slammed as I realized… the entire ridge was collapsing, and the enemy hadn’t even attacked yet.

“Damon…” her voice was sharp, terrified.

“I’ve got you!” I yelled, pulling her back.

But the ground cracked beneath our feet. Dust and debris filled the air. The shadows surged upward with the collapse, claws snapping. Energy flared in every direction.

And at that moment, I saw it fully. The second presence—the shard inside the main figure—wasn’t just watching us anymore. It was smiling.

And the smile… was ours.
