Chapter 8

The Offer

Kyra’s POV

“You don’t have to keep living like this.”

The words cut through the quiet like a blade, sharp enough to make me flinch. I didn’t even realize Ryder was in the room until his shadow stretched across the cold stone floor. My pulse kicked hard in my throat. He had a way of appearing without sound, like the darkness itself moved aside to let him through.

I lifted my chin, pushing power into my voice. “You should leave. I don’t want to hear anything you have to say.”

But Ryder only smiled, leaning lazily against the wall as though he owned this place, as though my disobedience amused him. His eyes glowed slightly, golden and dangerous, their hunger hard to hide.

“You say that,” he whispered, “but I think you’ve been waiting for me. You’re tired, Kyra. Tired of fighting. Tired of chains that aren’t even yours to carry. I can free you.”

My heart twisted. He knew exactly where to strike at the weak, bleeding parts of me I tried so hard to hide. I clenched my hands, nails digging into my palms.

“Free me?” My laugh was hollow, bitter. “By what betrayal Damon? By killing the only man who ever” I cut myself off, unable to finish.

Ryder’s smile deepened, sharp as a predator’s. “Exactly. Kill him. End your bond, and you’ll be free. No more pain. No more fate dragging you into fights that aren’t yours. Think about it… you could live your own life, unchained.”

The air increased, pushing heavy on my chest. I couldn’t breathe. My mind screamed against his words, but somewhere inside, a risky thought whispered: what if he was right? What if I could avoid all this?

I turned away from him, but his voice followed me like smoke.

“You feel it, don’t you? That link is a cage. It ties you to his pain, his weakness. You bleed because of him. And for what? What has Damon given you but scars?”

My throat tightened. Ryder didn’t know everything, but he wasn’t wrong either. Every moment with Damon was pain and fire, love and death mixed so deeply I couldn’t separate them anymore.

“You think I’d ever let you manipulate me into hurting him?” I whispered.

Ryder moved closer, his footsteps careful, ringing against the stone. “I don’t need to manipulate you. You already want it. You want the freedom I’m giving, even if you’re too afraid to admit it. You want to stop suffering for a man who can’t protect himself or you.”

His hand reached out, fingers touching a lock of my hair. I jerked away, but his voice held me still.

“Do you know what I see when I look at you, Kyra? A queen stuck in the body of a prisoner. A flame made to burn for someone else. But if you let me, I can make you burn for yourself.”

Something inside me shook. His words were poison, but poison had a way of tasting sweet when you were desperate.

“You don’t know me,” I said, though the tremor in my voice revealed me.

Ryder leaned in, his breath hot against my ear. “I know you better than Damon ever will. He sticks to you because you make him strong. But me… I want you for who you are, not for what you give me.”

My chest ached. Was that true? Or just another lie wrapped in silk?

I forced myself to meet his eyes, to drown in that golden fire without looking away. “You don’t love me. You just want to break me.”

His lips curved, slow and confident. “Maybe. Or maybe I’m the only one honest enough to admit what we could be if you stopped lying. Tell me, Kyra do you really want to keep dying for Damon, piece by piece? Or do you want to live?”

The words echoed in my brain long after he left me standing there, shaken and angry at myself for even listening.

That night, I couldn’t sleep. The walls of my room felt too close, the silence too loud. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Damon’s face, pale and broken behind the bars of his jail. His voice worried me: I’d rather die bound to you than free without you.

And then Ryder’s voice followed, darker, tempting: Kill him. End it. Live for yourself.

I pressed my hands to my ears as if I could block them out, but nothing helped. My chest hurt, and the bond between me and Damon pulsed like a wound, telling me he was still suffering. Still waiting.

I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think.

So I left my bed and walked into the cold night, thinking the air would clear my head. The moonlight spread silver across the ground, soft but merciless, as though it wanted to show every shade I was hiding.

I mumbled into the empty air, “Why does it feel like no matter what choice I make, I lose?”

Halfway through the night, I returned to my room, tired. My body begged for rest, but my mind was still at war. I lay down, eyes burning, heart racing, but finally sleep pulled me under.

At first, it was quiet. For the first time in weeks, I dreamed of nothing. Just silence. Just dark.

But when I stirred awake, every muscle in me froze.

Someone was there.

My chest stiffened as I felt the shift in the air, the slight weight of eyes watching me. Slowly, my gaze flickered across the room.

And then I saw him.

Ryder.

Sitting in the darkness at the foot of my bed, his golden eyes glowing slightly, fixed on me.

He didn’t move. Didn’t speak. Just watched.

Cold fear shot through my veins, mixed with something else I refused to name. My lips parted, but no sound came out.

Why was he here? How long had he been watching?

And worst of all what did he plan to do now?

The quiet stretched, and his voice finally broke it, low and calm, as if he belonged there in the darkness beside me.

“You dream of him, don’t you? Even while I’m watching.”

My blood ran cold.

What would he do if I told him the truth?

Or worse what would he do if I lied?
