Chapter 2 The Sweet Lover
“Mara! Let her come in! What the hell is wrong with you?” snapped the matriarch of the house, Harriet Basting. “Come, come, sweetie! Oh, I am so proud of you!” Harriet was so happy to see her granddaughter. “Eleanor! Come, Eve is here!” shouted Harriet and called her elder daughter.
“Eve!” shouted Eleanor and came running to the door. Maeve ran inside and hugged her grandmother first and then her mother.
“Oh, I missed you so much! How happy am I?” shouted Eleanor, and tears started streaming down her face.
“Mom! Why are you crying?” said Maeve, and wiped her mother’s tears.
“Yes, El! Why are you crying? Our child made us proud!” said Harriet, but Maeve laughed after seeing that Harriet, too, was crying. Maeve knew that was the tears of happiness.
“Enough!!!” snapped Mara. “I want them out of here! My sister and her child, I want them out of here!!” she yelled at her loudest. Maeve looked around and saw that her uncle was not in the living room. Where was Melvin? He was with Mara at all times when she used to bully her; he was never going to miss that chance. Then what happened now?
“What the hell are you talking about?” snapped Harriet and looked at Mara, her other daughter.
“First, my sister tried to seduce my husband all her life. We took them in. We made sure this Eve was given a proper education and healthy food, and we made sure these two whores had a roof over their heads. And when she could not seduce my husband, she sent her daughter. Is that why she was raising her? The moment she grew up and got her boobs, she threw herself at Melvin? These sluts have no place in my house!” Mara kept spewing poison.
“Shut up!!” shouted Harriet and Eleanor together.
Maeve had no idea, but tears started streaming down her face. She didn’t want to cry. She did nothing wrong. She jerked her head to look at her aunt, Mara and snapped at her, “You very well know it was your husband who barged into my room and tried to force himself on me. Thank God that I didn’t call the police and send him for sexual assault. And it was you who broke his nose, not me!”
“Ohh! Now even mute has grown a tongue!” taunted Mara, with disgust written all over her face. “I will show you! I will show you! It's been ages since I gave you a dose of my cane. Where is it? Where is it?” shouted Mara and started looking for the cane, the cane she always used to hit Maeve with.
“Stop it! Stop it!” snapped Harriet and moved near Mara. She held Mara’s shoulder and tried to calm her down. “You know where she went, right? You know your lottery money is almost all gone. You need money. My pension alone won’t help. Think about who will pay for your beer and chicken every day. Maeve has got the internship. She will soon become permanent in the biggest corporation on this planet. Don’t you want to see the fruit of the seed that you sow? You let her go to school, you let her go to college, and now she has a job at the Blackridge Corporation. You will dance in money, you will sleep in money, hell, you will eat money. Do you want the golden goose to go away? Is that what you want? You know your husband is a pervert, an asshole, you know he tried to hurt Maeve and then you hurt him. stop taking out your anger on someone else. Go back in your room and I will bring breakfast. Go! Calm down and think about your future! Without Maeve, you have none!”
Mara gritted her teeth after her mother’s explanation and gulped her anger. She sighed loudly and, after giving a stinky eye to both Eleanor and Maeve, she moved towards her room.
Harriet looked at Mara walking away, took a deep breath and composed herself. With a smile on her face, she turned to look at her daughter and her granddaughter. “Now, Eve! Go get fresh. We have prepared your favourite to celebrate. Go!” smiled Harriet.
“What did you do, Grandma? How did you send her away? You really know magic!” cried Maeve with happiness.
“I have been telling you your whole life, I will always protect you. And that is what I did. You know Mara and Melvin only care about money. So I said that now you will make money, and they just have to sit and enjoy. Her greed is greater than her anger. Just show her some bling, and she will become a loyal dog,” explained Harriet.
“Oh, I love you, Grandma!” said Maeve and hugged Harriet immediately.
Maeve dragged her bag to her room and took out a clean pair of clothes from her tiny closet. She ran to the bathroom and took off her clothes. She stood before the mirror, and every trace, every evidence of last night stared in her face. Her whole body was covered in red hickeys. She blushed hard. Her middle finger automatically ran over her lips, her mind racing to every single kiss Thorin planted on her lips.
She could see her face turning a shade of deep red. “Stop it! Stop thinking about him! Get fresh and then go out! Mom and Grandma will talk if you spend a lot of time inside the bathroom. But why did he feel familiar? Why did it feel like I knew him, I had seen him before? What am I talking about? How can someone forget his handsome face? And his touch… huh… well, I have left my contact details with him; I just hope he calls me soon. I love him!” Maeve could not stop smiling. Her grin kept getting bigger and bigger. She was still not thinking about why her healing powers had not kicked in. She never had any bruises for more than a few hours, so why were those hickeys not going anywhere?
She took a quick shower and ran out of the bathroom. She had her phone in her hand, and not for a second did she put her phone down. She knew her sweet lover would call her soon. She was eating with her mother and grandmother when her phone chimed loudly.
Her heart started beating fast. Was Thorin sending her messages? What was he going to say? Was he going to repeat what he said last night? He confessed his feelings to her. he said he loved her. Did the message say the same thing? Her fingers were itching to see the message. But her heart was beating like a loud drum. She bit her lips and unlocked her phone.
