Chapter 4 Chapter Four

ALPHA XANDER'S POV

I bounded down the hallway, my body humming with rage. Whether it was the tone she used to address me, the obvious disregard of my position and status, the mate I just discovered or the mention of Evelyn, I couldn't tell. My head was a jumbled mess. All I knew was that woman couldn't remain here. She managed to make me let go of all the control I had over my emotions. The way her eyes rolled, her lips.....

"Damn it" I slammed my fist into the wall. Arousal and rage coursed around my throat tightly. I was going to lose my mind at this point.

I heard whispers and turned to see few people gathered in the hallway. I walked out immediately before I'll give them more to talk about. The crazy alpha they'll say. I barely made it to my office when the door opened and Gabriel came in.

"Alpha..."

"I don't want to hear it. I want her out of my fucking land" I snapped, unable to hold in my anger.

"But Leo has taking a liking to her..you saw his reluctance to let her go"he tried to reason with me but I was too far gone to listen to any of it.

"I don't give a fuck about what he wants or not. She's a rogue....shes dangerous"

"She saved his life" he argued.

"Don't you see how it fucking fits the puzzle. She happened to be out there in the pouring rain and heard his cry for help. He calls her mama"

"The shock..."

"Don't be a fucking fool Gabriel. It's part of their plan to get into the pack by using Leo"

"I don't.."

"Of course you won't see it. I know it. They have a witch. Otherwise, tell me how the fuck I'm feeling sparks when I see her and her scent is driving me crazy"

"Fuck" his eyes widened. "She is your mate"

"She isn't my fucking mate. Evelyn is my mate" And she was dead. There was no other mate for me. So whatever witchcraft they were using on me, it couldn't fucking work because I will not be played.

"No, like a second chance mate"

"That's a fable...I've never seen it happen" I said without pausing for a second. Second chance mates were stories told to grieving wolves to help them out of their misery. But nobody had ever witnessed its occurrence.

"It's happening to you. It's rare but not impossible" I knew it but why her? Why now? I just couldn't shake off the feeling that there was something awfully wrong with all of this happening at the same time.

"I think something is fishy."

"You're right to be apprehensive but I do not think it's possible to create a fake mate bond" I huffed.

"Nothing is impossible when it came to a rogue. If the right price is paid..."

"That explains your reaction to her"

"What the fuck are you talking about?" I snapped at him.

"I've never seen you so...out of sorts. No control. I thought you were going to grab her neck and squeeze until life left her eyes" I growled at that. I was tempted because of her sassy mouth but not to the point of her death. My wolf grumbled. He didn't like the thought of her dying which was stupid because he only just met her.

"But now I see it could have been something else"

"Don't talk shit" I growled at him.

"Evelyn is my only mate. It's going to remain like that until I die" there was no changing it. Ever.

"You're going to ignore the mate bond?"

"I'm not accepting it. She's leaving and I'll forget we ever met"

"She can stay"

"I don't want her to"

"But Leo..."

"There's too many reasons why it's wrong for her to be here"

"And there's a reason why she should be....think about Leo. We've done everything possible under the sun to make him speak. And this woman, he acknowledges her....he speaks because of her. If there is a chance that being around her will improve his health and speech, I don't think you should let her go"

"She cannot be here. There's too much to risk"

The mate bond will grow if we are in close proximity. I don't want that. There's also a possibility that he won't lose interest in her but get more attached. They tell be no way to get rid of her then.

"Don't think about yourself....think about Leo"

"I have him in mind that's why I know it'll be a bad idea if she stays. It's just...I don't want to risk it. He'll get over this short interaction but if she stays longer and he grows attached..."

"Will it be such a bad thing if Leo has a mother?"

"He already has a mother. I'm not replacing her" I snapped. Gabriel had good sense to take that as a warning and treaded cautiously.

"Evelyn would have wanted this" his words were a wrench to my heart.

Mostly because I knew it was the truth. If she were here, she would have done anything possible to make sure our son could talk. Even if that included him calling another woman 'mother'. I raked my hands through my hair. If her presence could help....

'Good idea' my wolf said eagerly, too excited at the possibility of her staying that it annoyed me to an end.

"If she stays, it's only temporary. If Leo starts getting better then she must leave. No matter what"

"That is a good start....who knows, you could change your mind" I ignored his last words.

"You have to convince her to stay then"

"Elderman must be doing that right now. He..." he didn't finish when the door opened and Elderman walked in. There was something in his eyes as he looked at me. I raised a curious brow.

"I was about to come to you" Gabriel said.

"She agreed to stay" he dropped the bomb and I wondered why she changed her mind. I sensed he wasn't done with what he had to say.

"She has a condition" I scoffed. She was in no place to give a condition. We were giving her food, shelter and protection without a cost.

"She wants alpha Xander to ask her himself"my eyes widened and Gabriel stiffened his laughter.

"No way" I said immediately. I could agree to her temporary residence here but there was no way in hell I was going to ask her. Never.

"Alpha..." the two of them started.

"No way" I snapped.

"If she isn't going to stay then she is welcome to leave. I'm never going to ask her" I said firmly.

"You agreed. For the sake of Leo and Evelyn too..."

"Stop using her damn name" I said frustrated. We needed her for the sake of Leo. Just until he was better. I huffed and stood up.

"I never want to hear a word about this ever" Gabriel zipped his mouth and Elderman gave me an appreciative smile.

I marched to the infirmary again. She was sitting cross legged, a mischievous smile on her face, her eyes eager for me to get started. I held in the anger and what I really wanted to say.

"I'm waiting" she folded her arms and I cursed under my breath at the sight of the cleavage peeking through the half opened shirt.

"Will you please stay to help my son?" She smiled widely and I was tempted to grab her and wipe that smile off her face.

"Yes I will" she said with a triumphant grin.

I stomped out of the room immediately before I was tempted to do something stupid and put her over my legs.
