Chapter 2
I wake up to silence, a dead silence that presses against my ears like cotton, and the first thing I notice is the smell. Dust and rust and something else, something unfamiliar that burns my nostrils and makes me cough.
My eyes open slowly, and I expect to see emergency lights or doctors or rescue workers hovering over me with worried expressions, but instead I find myself lying beneath the remains of a ruined building, concrete and twisted metal scattered everywhere like the world has been turned inside out. For several seconds I believe I am still trapped beneath the subway, that the collapse buried me alive and I somehow survived, but then I notice the sky through the gaps above me and I realize something is terribly wrong.
The clouds move strangely, carrying colors I have never seen before, purple and green streaking the horizon, and the air feels heavier than it should, almost as if the world has changed while I was unconscious.
I try to sit up, my body aching in ways I cannot describe, and immediately I notice something impossible. My injuries are gone. The wounds that should have killed me, the broken bones and internal bleeding and everything else, they have all disappeared like they never existed. My hands are clean, my arms are whole, and I do not understand how any of this is possible.
Before I can process what is happening, a familiar voice speaks inside my mind, cold and utterly without emotion.
[System 001 has completed host awakening.]
I freeze, my heart pounding against my ribs as the memory comes rushing back. The voice before darkness, the strange warmth spreading through my consciousness, and the words I did not understand. The system. It was real, it was not a hallucination, it actually happened to me.
"What the hell is going on?" My voice comes out rough and cracked, barely above a whisper. "Where am I? Why am I alive?"
[Host is currently located in what was once known as Chicago, Illinois. Host is alive because System 001 initiated binding before complete cellular death occurred.]
Another chill runs through me. "Before complete cellular death?" I push myself to my feet, my legs trembling beneath me, and I look around at the devastation surrounding me. "What does that even mean? I died. I should be dead. I felt myself die."
[The Fall changed everything, Host. One hundred years have passed since the event you witnessed.]
I stop breathing. "What did you just say?"
[One hundred years have passed since The Fall. The current year is 2126. Host Aria Hayes died in 2026.]
"That's impossible. That can't be right." I shake my head, my hands trembling as I press them against my temples. "I was just in the tunnel. I was just saving Lily. That was minutes ago, not a hundred years."
[Host was unconscious for exactly 100 years, 3 months, and 12 days. The system kept Host's consciousness preserved while the new body was constructed. Host has now been fully integrated.]
"You kept me alive for a hundred years?" I cannot wrap my mind around it, cannot understand how any of this is possible. "Why? Why would you do that?"
[Host was selected for compatibility with System 001. Host's self-sacrificial behavior and survival instincts made Host an ideal candidate for the binding process. More information will be revealed as Host progresses.]
I want to scream, I want to punch something, I want to wake up from this nightmare and find myself back in the hospital with doctors telling me everything is going to be okay. But this is real, this is happening, and I need to accept that before I lose my mind completely.
I start walking through the mess, my legs carrying me forward automatically as I search for any sign of the life I once knew. The buildings are still standing, some of them anyway, but they are now a mess of what they used to be, windows shattered and walls crumbling and nature reclaiming everything. I find an old photograph lying in the rubble, a family smiling at the camera, and I wonder if they survived or if they died like everyone else.
Everyone I loved is gone. My mother, my father, my friends, my colleagues, all of them dead and buried and forgotten while I slept for a hundred years. There is no home for me to return to, no one waiting for me, no familiar faces to greet me when I wake up. The only thing left from my old life is myself, and I do not even know who I am anymore.
[Warning. Danger detected. Incoming hostile entity.]
The system's voice jolts me out of my spiraling thoughts, and I turn around just in time to see something I cannot explain. A creature is moving through the ruins, its body twisted and deformed, its skin covered in scales that gleam in the strange light, and its eyes are red and hungry as they lock onto me.
"What the hell is that?"
[Mutated beast. Evolution caused by residual energy from the meteor shower.]
"It's coming toward me."
[Correct. Host is advised to run.]
I do not need to be told twice. I take off running through the ruined streets, my emergency training kicking in as I dodge and leap over collapsed walls, but the creature is faster than anything I have ever seen. It moves like a predator, like something built specifically for hunting, and I know within seconds that I cannot outrun it.
I duck into a collapsed building, pressing myself against the wall as I try to catch my breath, but the creature bursts through the entrance with a loud roar and I realize I am cornered. There is nowhere left to go, no escape route, no way out.
"This is it," I whisper, my voice breaking as I stare into the creature's hungry eyes. "This is really how I die."
Then a roar shakes the entire street, so loud and so powerful that the ground vibrates under my feet, and the creature attacking me suddenly freezes. Its red eyes widen with something I did not think beasts could feel, something that looks exactly like fear, and I watch as a massive white lion steps from the ruins behind it.
The lion is impossible. It is too large, too intelligent, too powerful, and it moves like a warrior rather than an animal, every movement precise and deliberate as it approaches the mutated beast. The creature tries to flee, tries to escape, but the lion is faster, and in seconds it destroys the mutated beast with a single swipe of its enormous paw.
I stare at the dead creature, then at the lion, and I cannot decide which one terrifies me more.
The white lion turns to face me, its golden eyes locking onto mine, and I see something in those eyes that makes my breath catch. This is not just an animal, this is something else entirely, something I do not have words for.
Then the lion begins changing.
I watch in disbelief as its massive body shrinks and shifts, and where the beast stood moments ago there is now a man. A tall man with silver-white hair and golden eyes and unmistakable animal features that mark him as something far beyond human. He studies me carefully, his gaze sharp and assessing, and I see confusion flicker across his face.
Because he knows. He knows that humans from before The Fall should no longer exist, and yet here I am, standing in front of him, alive and breathing and just as confused as he is.
"Who are you?" His voice is deep and rough, like he does not speak often.
I refuse to answer because I have learned one thing in this new world already, that trusting strangers can get you killed, and I do not know if this man is a threat or an ally.
He steps closer, and I take a step back, my body tensing as I prepare to fight if I have to. "My name is Kael Ashbourne. I'm a shifter. I'm not going to hurt you."
"Forgive me if I don't believe you," I say, my voice shaking despite my best efforts to stay calm. "I just watched you turn from a lion into a man. I don't know what you are."
"I told you what I am. A shifter." He studies me again, his golden eyes narrowing slightly. "You're from before The Fall, aren't you?"
"I don't know what that means."
"You survived The Fall without changing. Your type is extremely rare. Most of them died out decades ago." He takes another step closer, and this time I do not move away. "How are you still alive? You should have died a hundred years ago."
"I was told I was asleep. Something about consciousness preservation." I shake my head, frustration bubbling up inside me. "I don't understand any of this."
Before Kael can respond, the system's voice echoes inside my mind again, urgent and sharp.
[High-level shifter detected. Unknown compatibility response detected. Beginning analysis.]
"What does that mean?" I demand out loud, and I see Kael's eyes narrow at my sudden outburst.
[Analysis ongoing. Host's hidden identity has not yet awakened. More information will be provided when analysis is complete.]
"What hidden identity? What are you talking about?"
Kael steps closer to me, his expression shifting from confusion to something I cannot read, and I feel a strange pull in my chest as he approaches. His golden eyes lock onto mine, and I see something flicker in them, something that looks almost like recognition.
For the first time in many years, his instincts are telling him something impossible.
This woman should not exist.
But she does.
And somehow, his beast knows her.
"What's your name?" he asks, his voice softer now.
"Aria. Aria Hayes."
He repeats my name under his breath, like he is testing how it sounds on his tongue, and I feel that strange pull again, stronger this time, almost like a magnetic force drawing me toward him.
