Chapter 8 One of Many
Luxury. Best of choices. Rarest of collections and the most expensive of times, these were trademarks of the wealthiest family and none was absent on the glamorous body of Delphine Sterling as she walked into the event hall with Mylo.
Cameras clicked as paparazzi tried to catch a glimpse of everything shiny on her. Mylo was somewhat distinguished. Even though he had a specially made, expensive suit on, his jewelry was left out of his outfit.
“You don't have to put on any wristwatch. The one in the house cost a great fortune and I don't want it on you. Not like it won't fit or something, but it won't be suitable for that unfortunate hand of yours,” she spoke rudely to him before they got out of the car earlier.
“If any guest asks you about it, you forgot it. I'd gladly make up a story for you if that's too much for you to remember,” she said in a rude tone.
The hall was filled with dignitaries and guests from all over. One could tell it wasn't just any gathering but for the elites in the city.
“Oh, Miss Sterling,” one of the male staffs greeted, offering a tray of wine for her to pick from.
She seemed distracted on her phone but it was as though the male staff had cut her attention off or not.
“Are you daft or something? It's Mrs. Sterling,” she corrected, flashing the ring on her finger before his bulging eyes.
“Pardon my manner, ma'am. It was only a slip of tongue.”
“Don't let it slip next time. You are lucky I and my husband are in a pretty good mood this hour of the day,” she commented, resting her hands on Jaxon’s shoulder.
“You are a perfect couple,” the attendant said with a smile and walked away.
“See, he called us perfect. That's exactly what I want my father to see as well,so behave cause right now, all eyes are on us,” Delphine said with another fake smile of hers.
She had mastered the art, and she was doing an excellent job of deceiving the press and the audience into believing that Mylo Archer was her husband. Jaxon, on the other hand, was waiting to hear her speak about whatever had distracted her on her phone.
He could tell it had be about Dorian Crane. After all, that was the grand plan, to create a sudden tension in their hearts.
They were both ushered to the VIP section. The event was hosted by the prestigious Bernadictos family, one of the wealthiest families in the city, and the Sterlings were among the guests of honor.
There were song performances and choreographed dance routines. It was an exquisite event, and every table was filled with plenty of meals and snacks. Jaxon kept staring at the table as if he was eager to have a meal already, but Delphine hadn't given him the go-ahead.
She was busy on her phone scrolling through what seems to be like a news page. “Oh wow…so its actually true,” she muttered as her eyes browsed through the words displaying on her phone screen.
“What is true? Is everything alright?” Jaxon asked.
She paused and looked at him with a serious face….”I don't know if this would matter to you anyways but I just read that Dorian Crane was found dead in his lodge,” she rolled her eyes at him.
Jaxon faked a surprise and remorseful look, “Oh my goodness, how on heck did that happen? Was he killed or what?”
She smirked…”Compose yourself, Mylo. Remember we are at a function. We would be acknowledged any moment from now. Stop looking like all this matters..”
She was unexpectedly cold. Even though Jaxon knew he was behind the whole murder case. He expected to see a downcast countenance on Delphine but opposite was the case.
She didn't even look remorseful for the man. “What an attitude!” he thought in his mind.
She took out the purse in her bag and placed a bundle of cash on the table whilst she adjusted the gloss on her lips.
Their table was exceptional, of course, not just because it was in the VIP section, but because the Sterlings were the most respected and admired family at events like this. The media knew they were major sponsors, so it was no surprise that all eyes were on the only representatives of the Sterling family present at the occasion
“I’m not moved by this. For all I know, it might just be fake news and if he is home, truly, I guess that gives me more ground to stand on before my father,” she commented harshly.
Jaxon was about to speak when the master of the ceremony hit the glasses to acknowledge the presence of Delphine.
“Oh thank you very much. I'm much honored to be here, amongst you all. The Sterling family truly cares and I'm here with my husband,” she said, tapping Jaxon’s feet so he could get up with her.
He stood up and bow slightly. “You really need some lessons. I can't believe I have to teach you everything,” she whispered as they both smiled pretentiously to the crowd cheering at them.
It was at this point Delphine sighted her father who had suddenly took the applause from her to himself.
“And there goes the popular man called my father,” she clicked her tongue at him.
Something else caught Jaxon’s attention. An unfamiliar face who was Viktor Sterling. He wasn't looking like a bodyguard.
“And the young man beside him?” Jaxon asked.
“Who? That dude there, oh, that's Steven Crane, he is Dorian's distant brother or so I was told. Maybe the pest is actually dead,” Delphine uttered in a cold tone.
He watched as the young bald man spoke with Viktor and at the end of the conversation, he saw him hand over some documents to him and what looked like a business card.
Jaxon became much more interested the minute he heard what Delphine said. His eyes went toward Viktor’s pocket. “If I can't get the document now, at least I could check that card to see what is in it,”” he said to himself.
“Let's leave already,” Delphine suddenly uttered, dragging Jaxon by the hands like she couldn't wait another second.
They got to the car, and the clamoring press wouldn’t let them be. “Yes, he is my husband… that is my husband,” she uttered loudly, not because she was asked, but she kept repeating it so the media would get the message.
They were about to get into the car when Viktor suddenly appeared in front of them.
“What do you want, Father?”
“So you were really planning to leave the event without telling me?”
“Oh so you can control me again and tell me what you want and don't want….sorry but no!” She replied rudely.
Jaxon knew this was his cue to get what was in Viktor’s pocket….”I’m really sorry about my wife, Sir,” Jaxon moved closer to Viktor but he pushed him away.
“Don't fucking come close to me, you pauper!”
Unknowingly to him, Jaxon already picked his pocket successfully….
“You better watch it. Don't you dare think I like you cause I don't!!”
