I heard it before I felt it.

The thunder came first—a low, slow rumble through the glass walls of the house. I didn’t sleep. The red light from the digital clock carved a slash across the black: 2:47 a.m. This place was too big, too clean, too quiet.

Footsteps.

Heavy ones. Slow, deliberate.
