Chapter 2 When Chaos Answers
Lucen Velmira POV
I'd seen Nyxaria angry before.
Hell, I'd been responsible for most of it. But I'd never seen her smile while the entire fucking world fell apart around her. And that terrified me.
She stood beside Lyrielle in the center of the Great Hall, their fingers intertwined, violet and blue magic crawling over their skin. Above them, two enormous spectral dragons circled the enchanted ceiling.
The prophecy's final words still burned overhead.
WHEN THE CROWN FALLS, THE QUEENS SHALL RISE.
"Kaelth?"
My wolf paced inside me, his fur standing on end. "That is not just their magic."
No fucking kidding. The woman holding Taya Verric hostage screamed something about blood purity, but her voice disappeared beneath a sound that seemed to come from everywhere at once.
Laughter. High-pitched, childlike, and absolutely fucking delighted. "Ooooh! Bad people!"
Chaos. The First Magic. The ancient consciousness that had apparently decided my mate and her sister were suitable playmates. Wonderful.
Nyxaria tilted her head. Her golden eyes flashed violet.
"Lyri?"
Her sister smiled. "Together."
Their magic collided, and the Great Hall exploded. Not outward. Upward.
A pillar of violet-blue creation magic tore through the enchanted ceiling, shattering every illusion above us. Stars rained down in brilliant silver fragments, transforming into thousands of glowing butterflies before touching the floor.
Then the butterflies opened their mouths, and screamed.
"WHAT THE FUCK?" someone yelled.
Honestly, excellent question. The eight attackers surrounding Taya staggered as the marble beneath their feet softened. Vines erupted through the stone. Not ordinary vines. Black, silver, and violet tendrils covered in thorns that glowed with ancient runes.
They wrapped around ankles, wrists, and throats. The woman holding Taya screamed as her arm jerked backward. The moon-iron blade flew from her hand.
"NOW!" Alpha Draven roared.
I moved. Vampire speed carried me across the hall before the blade struck the ground. I caught Taya around the waist and ripped her away from the attackers. A spear of corrupted magic sliced past my shoulder. Pain exploded through my arm.
"SHIFT!" Kaelth snarled.
My bones cracked. Fur erupted along my forearms, claws replacing my fingernails as my wolf surged beneath my vampire skin. I spun and drove my claws through the attacker's magical shield. It shattered.
My fist connected with his jaw. He dropped. "Stay down, asshole."
Behind me, Taya sobbed. "Lucen!"
"Go! Find Rowan!"
She stumbled toward the tables as warriors rushed forward. Then every door in the hall slammed shut.
Nyxaria lifted her free hand. "Oh, no, you fucking don't."
The doors twisted. Wood became stone. Stone became something resembling enormous dragon jaws. The attackers screamed.
Chaos giggled. "I made teeth!"
Lyrielle laughed. Actually laughed. And I realized we were all spectacularly fucked. Because my mate wasn't controlling Chaos. Chaos wasn't controlling my mate. They were playing together. And the entire academy had become their playground.
"NYX!" I shouted.
She turned toward me. For one beautiful second, her eyes were hers again. "Lucen?"
"Please tell me you know what you're doing!"
Her smile widened. "Not a fucking clue!"
Of course.
Then the floor erupted beneath us.

Rhaen Velmira POV
There were many things I loved about Lyrielle Drakenholt.
Her courage. Her stubbornness. The way she looked at me like she was deciding whether to kiss me or commit murder. But watching her command a storm of primordial magic while laughing like a lunatic?
That was new. And gods help me, I was ridiculously fucking proud. Until a chunk of the ceiling tried to crush her.
"LYRI!"
I lunged. A massive slab of marble fell toward her head. Before I reached her, Lyrielle flicked two fingers.
The stone stopped, turned pink, and became a flock of extremely angry geese. They descended upon the nearest attackers, honking furiously and biting everything they could reach. I skidded to a halt.
"What the actual fuck?"
Chaos shrieked with laughter. "THEY'RE MEAN BIRDS!"
Elion appeared beside me, his red hair disheveled, golden-brown eyes wide. "Did she just turn a ceiling into geese?"
"Yes."
"Should we be worried?"
"Extremely."
Then a blast of crimson magic slammed into the western wall. The entire hall shook. My amusement vanished. More attackers were pouring through portals opening along the walls. Not just the eight fae parents. Dozens. Some wore dark robes marked with crimson sigils. Others had their faces concealed beneath enchanted masks. This wasn't a spontaneous rebellion. It was coordinated. Planned.
And we'd walked straight into it.
"PROTECT THE CHILDREN!" Alpha Draven thundered.
Warriors surged forward. Drayen shifted into an enormous wolf, Gisella's dragonfire blazing beside him. Seren unleashed a wave of darkness that swallowed three attackers whole. Kaelen roared, throwing himself between the younger students and a collapsing pillar. Finnian's runes ignited. Maeve sent a bolt of magic across the hall while Rowan fought at her side. And everywhere, people screamed.
Blood splattered the marble. Spells shattered against shields. The smell of burning flesh filled the air. Then I saw Jace. He was near the eastern doors with Amaris and Theo. Their son had been helping evacuate younger students when a portal ripped open behind them. A masked attacker stepped through. His hands glowed black.
"JACE!" I shouted.
Too late. The bastard launched a spear of corrupted magic directly at Theo. Jace moved without hesitation. He shoved Amaris and their son behind him, and took the entire blast through his chest.
The sound was sickening. A wet, terrible crack. Jace flew backward, striking a stone pillar hard enough to fracture it.
"NO!" Amaris screamed.
Theo caught his father before he hit the ground. I ran.
Elion followed. Another attacker emerged from the portal, raising his weapon toward the fallen family. My wolf erupted. I hit him with enough force to send us both crashing through a banquet table. My fangs sank into his shoulder. He screamed. I tore him away and slammed his head against the marble. Once. Twice. He stopped moving.
Elion snapped enchanted restraints around the bastard's wrists. "Alive," he growled. "We need answers."
I barely heard him, because Amaris was screaming.
And something in her voice made my blood turn cold.

Lucen Velmira POV
The battle had become a fucking nightmare.
Nyxaria and Lyrielle stood at its center, hands still joined, their magic expanding through the hall in enormous waves. Every time an attacker struck, Chaos answered. Crimson spells became harmless flower petals. Weapons transformed into snakes.
The floor opened beneath corrupted fae and swallowed them into glowing cages. But the portals kept appearing, and through them, the attackers were escaping.
"THEY'RE GETTING AWAY!" I roared.
Nyxaria's expression twisted. "NOT IF I CAN HELP IT!"
She thrust her free hand forward. A tidal wave erupted from the marble floor, sweeping six masked figures off their feet. Lyrielle followed with a wall of blue dragonfire. Three attackers were trapped. The others vanished through a portal before it collapsed.
Chaos shrieked angrily. "CHEATERS!"
Nyxaria growled. "Fucking cowards!"
Then a scream tore through the hall. Amaris. I turned.
Jace lay against a shattered pillar, Theo kneeling beside him. Blood covered his chest. Too much blood.
And even from across the room, I could hear his heartbeat. Weak. Slowing.
"Nyx," I whispered. She followed my gaze. Her face went white. The magic around her flickered. "Jace?"
Lyrielle gasped. Chaos went silent. For the first time since the battle began, the laughter stopped.
And somehow, that was worse.

Rhaen Velmira POV
I dropped to my knees beside Jace.
Amaris had both hands pressed against the wound in his chest. Blood seeped between her fingers.
"No," she whispered. "No, no, no. Jace, look at me."
He tried to smile. It broke something inside me.
"Hey, beautiful."
"Don't you fucking dare."
His breathing rattled. Theo was crying openly. "Dad? Please. Please get up."
Jace lifted a trembling hand and touched his son's cheek. "My boy. I'm proud of you."
Theo shook his head violently. "No. You don't get to do this. You don't get to leave us!"
Jace swallowed hard. His eyes found Amaris. "Take care of your mother."
She made a sound I would remember for the rest of my life. Not a scream. Not a sob. Something deeper.
Something torn from the center of her soul. "NO!"
Magic exploded around her. "SELENE!" she screamed toward the shattered ceiling. "VERENYA! SOLTHARION! ANY OF YOU FUCKING GODS!"
The entire hall trembled.
"YOU TOOK ELOWEN! YOU TOOK HER MATES! YOU SIT UP THERE IN YOUR PERFECT FUCKING REALM WHILE WE BLEED DOWN HERE!"
Jace coughed. Blood stained his lips. "Amaris..."
"NO! YOU LISTEN TO ME!"
Tears streamed down her face. "I HAVE GIVEN EVERYTHING TO THIS WORLD! EVERYTHING! YOU DO NOT GET TO TAKE HIM TOO!"
She looked toward the heavens. "PLEASE!"
Her voice shattered. "Please... he's my whole world."
Jace reached for her. She collapsed against him.
"My love," he whispered.
"Don't."
"I'd do it again."
"Don't you dare say that."
"For you. For Theo."
His eyes drifted toward their son. "Every time."
Theo buried his face against his father's shoulder. "I love you, Dad."
Jace smiled faintly. "Love you more, little wolf."
His hand slipped. Amaris caught it. "Jace?"
His breathing stopped for a heartbeat. Then returned, shallow and broken. "No," she sobbed. "Stay with me."
I looked around desperately. Healers were rushing toward us. But I could smell death. My wolf knew. And Jace knew too. He looked at me. "Rhaen."
I leaned closer. "Yeah?"
"Protect them."
My throat tightened. "I will."
"All of them."
I nodded. "You have my word."
He smiled. Then his gaze returned to Amaris. "My beautiful girl."
She pressed her forehead against his. "Please don't leave me."
"I never wanted to."
His final breath escaped in a trembling sigh.
And Jace was gone.
For one terrible moment, the entire world seemed to stop. Amaris stared at him. Waiting. As though refusing to believe what had happened could somehow make it untrue. Then she screamed. The sound tore through the Great Hall. Through the shattered windows. Through every soul still standing.
And even Chaos began to cry.
Lyrielle dropped to her knees beside us. Nyxaria followed. Their joined hands finally separated. The remaining creation magic dissolved into silver rain. Across the hall, Alpha Draven's warriors dragged several captured attackers into enchanted restraints.
But most had escaped. Dozens of portals had closed.
Dozens of enemies had vanished. And the ones we'd captured were laughing. One of them lifted his bloodied face. "This is only the beginning."
I rose slowly. My wolf snarled. "Then you better fucking pray we don't find the rest of you."
Behind me, Amaris cradled Jace's lifeless body. Theo held them both. And my mate wept beside her sister. The academy was still standing. Our enemies had been driven back. But victory? There was no fucking victory here.
Only blood. Only grief. And the terrible understanding that our parents' war had never truly ended.
It had simply waited for us.
Somewhere above Aetheros, the gods remained silent.
And below them, the Chaos Queens had just learned the price of protecting a kingdom.
