Chapter 5 Before there Was Light
Elowen Skye Thorne POV
For the first time in my life, I understood true helplessness.
And I fucking hated it.
The celestial observatory of Luminara stretched around us, its crystalline walls reflecting thousands of distant stars. Normally, the enormous viewing pool at its center showed Aetheros in perfect clarity.
Our children. Our friends. Our home. Now it showed nothing. An empty, colorless expanse that swallowed the light around it.
"Again," I demanded.
Selene stood opposite me, silver hair flowing around her shoulders as moonlight poured from her palms into the pool. For one glorious second, I saw the academy. Broken towers. Frightened students. Then the image fractured. A shockwave erupted from the water, throwing Selene backward. Daxon caught her.
"Enough!" he growled. "We've tried six fucking times."
"And we'll try seven!"
"Elowen."
"Don't you dare tell me to calm down!"
His jaw tightened, but he didn't argue. Ashrian studied the shattered pool. "The connection isn't merely blocked. Something is consuming the magic we send through it."
Vaelrix stepped forward, his dragon power filling the chamber. "Then we tear the veil open."
"And destroy the world beneath it?" Soltharion demanded.
Golden flames danced across the Sun God's shoulders. Vaelrix snarled. "Those are my children down there."
"They are all our children," Verenya answered quietly.
The Earth Goddess touched the crystalline wall. Delicate vines emerged beneath her fingers, their leaves immediately turning black.
Bram wrapped his massive arms around me. "Little one, breathe."
I buried my face against his chest. "I watched Jace die."
"I know."
"Amaris lost her mate. Theo lost his father. And I couldn't do a fucking thing."
Lachlan approached, his blue eyes shining. "Ach, lass. Dinnae put this burden on yer shoulders. We'd have moved heaven and earth tae reach them."
"But we can't."
Nobody answered. We were gods now. And we were powerless.
A tiny sob echoed through the chamber. Chaos sat beneath the viewing pool, her knees pulled against her chest. Her galaxy-colored hair had faded to dull silver.
"I broke it."
I knelt beside her. "Oh, sweetheart."
"I went down there. I wanted to help the girls. I made a little hole, and now everything's broken."
She began crying harder. "It's my fault."
"No. I let you go. If anyone's responsible, it's me."
"Oh, for the love of the Moon, would you two stop?"
Lyssira's voice thundered inside my head. "Neither of you caused this. Something was waiting for an opportunity."
"Lyssira..."
'No, Elowen. You will listen. We protected our daughters. Whatever happened afterward belongs to the creature that exploited it."
Selene approached. "Your wolf is correct."
Chaos sniffled. "Then why can't we see them?"
Selene's expression changed. She wasn't confused. She was afraid. "Because something has awakened that should never have reached us again."
Elanithra stepped away from the windows. "Selene?"
The Moon Goddess stared at the empty pool. "The Void."
Soltharion's flames dimmed. Verenya closed her eyes.
Elanithra whispered, "Impossible."
Selene shook her head. "The Void has returned."
"Someone had better start explaining," Daxon growled.
Selene raised her hand. The observatory vanished. We suddenly stood surrounded by endless darkness. "Before Aetheros, before Luminara, before the gods themselves, there was no universe. No time. No distance. No life."
Two lights appeared. One shimmered violet, silver, and green. The other was blacker than the darkness surrounding it. "Within that nothingness, two consciousnesses awakened. Chaos and Void."
Chaos lifted her head. "I remember."
"Chaos was possibility. Everything that might someday exist. Void was absence. Everything that could be swallowed, forgotten, or reduced to nothing."
The violet light danced. The blackness followed.
"At first, they existed together. Neither good nor evil. Neither understanding the other."
Darkness expanded around us.
"Void discovered shadows. Within those shadows, it shaped the first fears. Creatures formed from the terror of being alone, forgotten, and destroyed."
Horrifying shapes emerged. Skeletal figures with hollow faces. Writhing shadows covered in eyes. Enormous mouths opening where none should exist.
Bram pulled me closer. "What the fuck are those?"
"The first fear entities. They consumed identity, memory, and eventually existence itself."
Chaos whimpered. "They ate my pretty things."
Selene nodded sadly. "Because Chaos grew lonely and began creating."
A brilliant star burst into existence. Then another. Thousands. Millions.
"Chaos scattered stars across the emptiness. She shaped suns and moons, then worlds where possibilities could become real."
The darkness recoiled.
"Void hated what it could not erase. Chaos hated watching her creations disappear."
A golden sun ignited beside a silver moon.
"And from Chaos's determination to preserve what she loved, the first gods were born."
Soltharion stepped forward. "Sun."
Selene inclined her head. "Moon."
The lights transformed into magnificent celestial beings.
"From their joining came balance. Day and night. Warmth and rest. Growth and renewal."
Verenya touched the floor. Mountains rose beneath us. Forests spread across continents, and oceans filled the valleys. "Earth followed," she whispered.
Elanithra lifted her hands. Constellations appeared overhead. "And the stars became pathways, memory, and destiny."
Selene smiled faintly. "Other gods and goddesses emerged as creation expanded, each carrying a fragment of Chaos's original purpose."
Ashrian frowned. "Then every god descended from Chaos?"
"Almost."
The stars turned crimson.
"There was one exception."
Blood began falling from the heavens. It gathered where fear entities had torn apart the earliest living creations. "When the first blood was spilled in terror, something new awakened."
A woman rose from the crimson pool. Beautiful. Terrible. Smiling. "Raelith."
My body went rigid. "She wasn't born from Chaos?"
"No. Raelith was born from blood and fear. Neither a true creation of Chaos nor a simple shadow of Void. She existed between them."
Ashrian's fangs descended. "That explains her obsession with blood."
"And with Chaos," Elanithra added. "She believes consuming the First Magic will allow her to surpass both origins."
Chaos buried her face against me. "She always wanted to eat me."
I held her tighter. Selene continued.
"As creation grew, the gods realized our worlds needed defenders against the shadows."
Great forests appeared around us. Massive beasts roamed beneath golden sunlight.
"Soltharion created the first beast species. Creatures of strength, instinct, and survival. Bears, lions, and countless others eventually gave rise to the beast shifter bloodlines."
Bram straightened proudly. "Explains why we're magnificent."
Daxon rolled his eyes. "Don't encourage him."
"From my moonlight came the werewolves," Selene continued. "Guardians of the night, bound by pack, loyalty, and lunar cycles."
Daxon folded his arms. "Naturally, we got the better deal."
"Keep dreaming, wolf," Bram muttered.
Verenya stepped forward. "From living earth, I shaped dryads, the first fae, and the creatures of enchanted forests. Beings who could defend the places where creation took root."
Winged fae danced between enormous trees. Dryads emerged from ancient trunks.
"And dragons?" Vaelrix asked.
Elanithra answered. "They came when creation's powers intertwined. Flame, earth, sky, and ancient magic joined to produce beings of extraordinary elemental strength."
Vaelrix smiled. "Naturally."
Lachlan chuckled. "Ye're as bad as the bloody bear."
Selene's expression darkened. "But Raelith refused to remain a spectator."
The forests turned crimson.
"She created vampires from blood, hunger, and the desire to defy death. They were intended as her servants."
Ashrian's expression hardened. "But we developed free will."
"Yes. Every species eventually chose its own path. Some embraced compassion. Others cruelty."
I squeezed Ashrian's hand. Selene raised both palms. The sun and moon appeared together above a fertile world.
"Finally, Soltharion and I created mortals. Humans. Fragile beings without the natural advantages of older species."
"Why?" I asked.
"Because strength alone could not defeat fear. Mortals could create meaning despite knowing their lives would end."
Images of human civilizations appeared. Families. Cities. Art. Love. War.
"Every species was meant to contribute to creation's survival," Selene said. "Not dominate the others."
I thought of the blood-purity extremists. "We've spent thousands of years forgetting that."
"Yes," Verenya answered sadly.
The visions disappeared. We stood inside the observatory again.
"What happened to Void?" Vaelrix demanded.
Soltharion's jaw tightened.
"We fought it."
"The first divine war lasted longer than mortal civilizations have existed," Elanithra explained. "Entire worlds vanished. Gods fell. Eventually, we forced Void beyond creation's boundaries."
"But we couldn't destroy it," Selene admitted. "How does one destroy the absence of existence?"
Lachlan rubbed his beard. "So ye locked the bastard outside reality."
"In a manner of speaking."
"And now it's back," Daxon growled.
"The veil was already strained by Elowen's ascension," Selene explained. "When Chaos sent her thread through, Void exploited the weakness."
Chaos trembled. Lyssira growled inside me. "Do not blame the child."
"Void was waiting," Selene assured us. "The responsibility belongs to it."
"Can we repair the veil?" Ashrian asked.
"Not while Void feeds upon the fracture," Elanithra answered. "Forcing divine magic through may strengthen its hold."
I stared at the empty pool. Our children were grieving, frightened, and preparing to disappear into hiding. And I couldn't even tell them I loved them.
"So what do we do?"
The gods exchanged glances. Verenya spoke first.
"During the first war, we created defenders against Void's shadows."
"Perhaps creation needs another defender," Soltharion suggested.
"Someone capable of crossing the fracture without being consumed," Elanithra added.
"Someone strong enough to oppose what existed before the gods," Selene whispered.
Every face turned toward me. Daxon stepped closer. "No."
Bram tightened his arms around me. "Absolutely fucking not."
Vaelrix's eyes burned. "She will not face this alone."
Ashrian joined us. "No one should face this alone."
Lachlan took my hand. "Where ye go, mo chridhe, we go. Always."
I looked down at Chaos. "We could make something," she whispered. The observatory fell silent. Something.
Or someone. A new creation. Not another army born merely to die fighting a war it hadn't chosen. Someone capable of standing against darkness itself.
Selene approached. "Elowen, you carry Chaos willingly. Together, you possess creation magic unlike anything this realm has ever known."
"And?"
"You may be capable of creating what even the first gods could not."
Lyssira stirred within me. "Careful, Elowen. Creation is not the same as control."
I knew. Gods, I knew. Somewhere beyond that fractured veil, my children were fighting for their lives.
And something older than the gods was waking. I tightened my grip on my mates' hands. "Then we'd better figure out what the fuck we're going to create."
Chaos lifted her head and her galaxy eyes gleamed. For the first time since the veil fractured, a tiny star flickered above her palm.
Far beyond Luminara, something in the darkness noticed....and began to laugh.
