Chapter 75

Lorenzo did regret it. Horribly.

He’d never thought he’d see the day when he wished he had listened to Cruz Sterling and headed his warning. Some things were never meant to see the light of day and that one single piece of purposely left-out evidence fell into that category, without a doubt.

After Lorenzo’s brief, heated phone call with the new Alpha of Blue Moon, he went back to examining the newspaper clippings that were already sitting in front of him. He figured, perhaps he’d missed something.

But he couldn’t find anything.

For the next two days, he spent the majority of his time kept up in his office, pouring over this new ‘evidence’ with no luck or clear explanation in sight...His patience was running thinner the longer Cruz held out. Meanwhile, he barely saw any change in emotion when it came to Eleanor.

She was still heavily distraught over the sight of her father’s picture and information mixed in with the rest of the case.

Lorenzo wished there was something he could do to ease her pain. He knew what it was like to lose a parent. Granted, he’d always been aware of his mother’s growing illness and was at least able to be with her up until the very end. Eleanor’s father had gone missing and was pronounced dead after the police were forced to give up the search for him.

‘She was never given the proper closure that she deserved,’ he thought sadly. ‘All these years, she’s been living with the mystery that encased her father’s unfortunate end.’

Just when Lorenzo was becoming convinced that Cruz was trying to cheat him again, one of the staff members eagerly informed him that something else had been delivered to the house.

Unlike the last time, this parcel appeared relatively small. All that came was a wrapped disk case with not even a label on it.

Already, he was not impressed but he had no choice.

Lorenzo took the disk back to his office and carefully slipped into the loading dock on his laptop. An immediate recording came up and he sat through every minute...He couldn’t believe it.

The audio was as clear as could be which made all sense of doubt dissolve in his mind.

Cruz had sent him a disk of an audio recording of Eleanor’s father moments before his death. His hands clenched into tightened fists, causing his knuckles to turn white from the disgusted rage and anguish that spread within him.

“It wasn’t just suicide,” he groaned to himself.

According to what he’d heard, the entire situation had been clearly orchestrated by those at Blue Moon. There were a few voices he could recognize, Cruz’s being one in particular, that rang out with heartless emotion.

By the time he’d gotten through all of it, his head felt like it was going to split in half. Now, there was only one main thought in his mind. Eleanor.

Jesus Christ...How on earth was he going to tell her about this? He hadn’t a single clue.

‘Why do you have to tell her about this at all?’ his wolf prompted. ‘Why does she have to know that this disk even exists?’

It was an unethical thought to have. Of course, Lorenzo needed to inform Eleanor about the disk. However...

The very idea of presenting her with something that he knew was going to ultimately rip her heart out was just one of those things he couldn’t seem to fathom.

Lorenzo decided right at that moment, that he wasn’t going to tell Eleanor about it. None of it would ever fall into her hands.

‘It’s better this way,’ his wolf commented. ‘Just think. If she finds out that Blue Moon had a hand in her father’s death, there is no telling what she may do.’

Lorenzo spent the good remaining hour in silent contemplation over the purpose behind all of what Cruz sent them. As Eleanor mentioned a few days ago, none of the information was related to current events.

Suddenly, a much darker thought came to mind. If it wasn’t meant to help them, then perhaps its purpose was to send some kind of a message instead.

‘Don’t mess with Blue Moon—unless you’re looking to get yourself killed.’

Now that Cruz had what he was initially after, there truly wasn’t any given reason why he was willing to hand over anything of real use. Why would he wish to potentially hurt the one and only real business that’s kept Blue Moon afloat all those decades?

The answer was simple. He wouldn’t.

Lorenzo didn’t necessarily feel as though he’d been tricked. He firmly believed that even if he insisted on Cruz handing over the so-called evidence before he helped him, it still wouldn’t have led them anywhere.

Nevertheless, he fully understood why Cruz so heavily suggested that they call off the investigation. He claimed that he would stop the killings but the dark, illegal business would surely keep on running as it always had.

“That would ultimately defeat the purpose of what we've been trying to do all this time,” he said to himself.

He’d come to the bitter conclusion that this sort of evidence was specially meant to deter Eleanor from pursuing things any further. It was meant to frighten her and prove a point that the Blue Moon Pack was not to be crossed.

They weren't afraid to go after people who posed a threat and got in their way.

‘Like Eleanor’s father.’

As of right now, she and Lorenzo posed the biggest threat solely based on the evidence they already collected over the past couple of weeks.

It all made him wonder just how many other people had been permanently silenced by Blue Moon.

‘It’s strange, don’t you think?’ his wolf suddenly questioned.

Lorenzo arched a questionable brow. “What is?”

‘Two suicides,’ he stated. ‘Now that we know that Eleanor’s father’s death was covered up to appear as a suicide, who’s to say that this felon they charged all those years ago didn’t suffer the same fate?’

Lorenzo sat up straight in his chair. What a brilliant point! Had this guy taken his own life? Or had someone else gotten to him first?
