Chapter 1

Three-year-old Mia arrived at the Bennett mansion in the rain, carrying a broken stuffed rabbit and an unpaid hospital bill.

“Are you Adrian Bennett?” she asked.

When the coldest billionaire in the city said yes, she held out the bill.

“Good. Dad, you owe me three years of formula.”

Mia came for food—not the Bennett fortune. But hidden inside her rabbit was the dying testimony of the mother the Bennetts had branded a liar.

Now Adrian must prove Mia is his daughter, clear her mother’s name, and uncover who erased their existence three years ago.

The Bennett family treated dinner like a board meeting.

Twelve relatives sat around a table long enough for twenty-six dishes. In forty minutes, the loudest sounds had been a serving spoon touching porcelain and Charles Bennett tapping one finger against the beneficiary list for the family foundation.

Marcus Bennett lifted his teacup. “Lily is old enough to be added. She has attended foundation events for years, and the press already knows her.”

Beside him, Vanessa Ward smiled. “She is a Bennett. We can’t let people think this family has no next generation.”

Seven-year-old Lily sat very straight in her pink dress. “I’ll work hard, Great-Grandpa.”

Charles did not answer. He looked down the table at Adrian, who had spent half the meal reading a merger contract.

“What do you think?” Charles asked.

Adrian closed the file. “Follow the charter.”

No one was surprised. Adrian could divide a company into assets, debts, and risk before breakfast. Feelings were harder, so he generally refused to discuss them.

Marcus’s smile thinned. “Not every family matter belongs in a rulebook.”

The doorbell rang.

Everyone looked toward the hall. Rain struck the tall windows in hard silver lines, and the mansion’s security gate had not announced a guest.

The house manager returned a minute later with a strange expression. “Mr. Charles, there’s a child at the front door. She says she’s looking for Adrian.”

Marcus laughed. “A very young client?”

Adrian ignored him and went to the door.

On the stone step stood a little girl in a faded yellow raincoat. She was perhaps three and a half. Wet hair clung to her forehead, and both arms were wrapped around an old stuffed rabbit. One ear had been sewn on crooked. A small backpack sagged from her shoulders.

She studied Adrian’s face. “Are you Adrian Bennett?”

“Yes.”

She hugged the rabbit tighter, rose on her toes, and announced, “Dad, you owe me three years of formula money.”

Adrian’s hand stopped at his cuff.

Behind him, the entire dining room went silent.

The girl’s eyes were red from cold or crying, but her voice remained serious. “Mom said if I ran out of food, I should come ask you to pay her back.”

Marcus came into the hall. “Scammers are starting young.”

The child shrank back. “I’m not a scammer. Mom said when someone owes money, you need a bill.”

She tucked the rabbit under one arm and searched her backpack. It held a packet of crushed crackers, a thin jacket, and a bundle of paper wrapped in several plastic bags. From it she drew a worn hospital receipt.

“See? This can be reimbursed.”

Adrian took it.

The receipt came from a maternity hospital in the south of the city. The date was three and a half years ago. Under newborn observation fees, someone had written a father’s name by hand.

Adrian Bennett.

He knew the handwriting.

“What is your mother’s name?”

“Claire Wynn. Claire like clear, and Wynn with two n’s. She always told people how to spell it.”

For the first time that evening, Adrian forgot the people behind him.

Vanessa stepped closer. “A receipt is easy to fake.”

The little girl heard only the word fake. “It’s real. Mom said Dad hurts here.” She pointed to a place below Adrian’s left shoulder. “When it hurts, he isn’t supposed to drink ice water.”

Adrian’s gaze sharpened. He had injured that shoulder in a racing accident at eighteen. Claire used to replace every glass of ice water in his office with warm water. Very few people knew why.

Charles came into the hall, leaning on his cane. His eyes fell on a red cord at the child’s neck. Half a small jade token showed above her collar.

“Where did you get that?”

“Mom sewed it into my baby clothes. She said I mustn’t lose it.”

Vanessa said, “Old Bennett objects have left the house before. She could have found it anywhere.”

“I didn’t find it.” The child’s stomach gave a soft growl. She quickly hid it behind the rabbit. “I’m not here for dinner. I’m here to get reimbursed.”

Charles’s face changed. “Bring her inside.”

She did not move. She looked only at Adrian. “May I?”

He had negotiated acquisitions worth billions without hesitation. He had no idea why permission to cross one doorway felt harder.

At last, he stepped aside. “Come in.”

She crossed the threshold carefully, then knelt and pulled out a handkerchief to wipe her muddy shoes. Her small hands only smeared the water into the carpet.

Vanessa sighed. “Who taught her to behave like that?”

“Enough,” Adrian said.

The girl looked up, already frightened that she had done something wrong.

Adrian crouched and took the wet handkerchief. “You don’t have to clean the carpet.”

“But Mom said if I dirty someone else’s things, I have to pay.”

“This is the Bennett home.”

She hugged the rabbit. “Do I have to leave tomorrow?”

No one answered quickly enough.

Charles turned to the house manager. “Dry towel. Children’s slippers.”

“We don’t have children’s slippers, sir.”

The mansion had a wine cellar, a cigar room, two libraries, and an entire floor of closets. It did not have one pair of shoes for a child.

“I can go barefoot,” the girl offered.

“Bring mine,” Adrian said.

His gray slippers swallowed her feet. She took one step, lost the right one, and bent to retrieve it without complaint.

Adrian looked down at the hospital receipt in his hand. His name had sat there for three years while this child learned to apologize for needing food.

The family dinner ended without dessert.

The house manager asked a maid to find dry clothes. Nothing in the mansion fit Mia, so the maid returned with a white T-shirt that belonged to an adult and folded it until it became a nightdress. Mia emerged from the guest bathroom holding the hem above her ankles. Her wet raincoat hung by the heater, dripping onto a towel.

“Is this borrowed?” she asked.

“For tonight,” the maid said. “Tomorrow we’ll buy clothes in your size.”

Mia touched the clean cotton with both hands. “Can I wash it before I give it back?”

Adrian heard the question from the sitting room. The girl had arrived asking him for money, yet every object she received seemed to create a new debt in her mind.

He looked again at the contents of her backpack. The crackers had gone soft from the rain. The thin jacket had been folded around a child’s toothbrush and two pairs of socks. There was no toy other than the rabbit, no change of shoes, and no note asking for a share of the Bennett fortune.

Only a hospital bill.

Only his name.

In a smaller sitting room, the girl perched on the edge of a sofa, still wearing Adrian’s enormous slippers. On the coffee table lay the receipt, the jade half, and a photograph from her bag. Claire stood in a hospital corridor, pale and tired, holding a newborn wrapped in pink. On the back she had written: Mia, day seven.

“Your name is Mia?” Charles asked.

She nodded. “Mom said I wouldn’t sleep when I was a baby, so she named me Mia and hoped I’d get better at it.”

Marcus said, “These things still don’t prove who her father is.”

“Mom said I should only find Adrian.”

Adrian looked at her. “Where is your mother now?”

Mia picked at a loose thread on the rabbit. “She went to sleep in the white building. Aunt Grace said she was tired and would sleep for a very long time.”

She did not know the words hospital room or death certificate. She remembered only Claire’s cold hand on her hair and one final instruction: Eat by yourself. If there’s no food, go to the Bennett house. Find Adrian. He owes you.

Charles struck the floor once with his cane. “Arrange a paternity test tonight.”

Ethan Bennett rose from the end of the table. Adrian’s younger brother handled the family’s legal affairs and possessed an even less welcoming face than Adrian’s.

“I’ll call the lab.”

Mia covered her mouth. “Will there be a shot?”

“A cheek swab,” Ethan said.

Her eyes went blank.

He tried again. “A cotton swab touches the inside of your mouth. It won’t hurt.”

She kept both hands over her lips.

Adrian said, “Afterward, I’ll buy formula.”

Everyone looked at him.

Mia understood. She lowered her hands. “One small can is enough. It’s expensive.”

The house manager brought warm milk and rice porridge. Mia asked permission before tasting either. Then she ate slowly, scraping the last grain of rice from the bowl.

When the lab staff arrived, she endured the swab with a wrinkled nose. Adrian gave his sample next.

“Did yours hurt?” she asked.

“No.”

“Then you’re a little braver than me.”

Ethan’s mouth twitched. Adrian gave him a look, and it vanished.

They put Mia in a first-floor guest room. She sat on the edge of the bed with her rabbit and refused to lie down.

“Will I still be here when I wake up?” she asked the house manager.

He could not promise what the family had not decided.

Adrian, standing in the doorway, said, “Yes.”

“Do you keep your promises?”

“Yes.”

“I won’t wake up outside?”

He crossed the room and folded the blanket down. The edge came out crooked. “You won’t.”

Mia climbed into bed but stayed at the very edge.

“Sleep in the middle,” he said.

“I might wrinkle it.”

“Sheets can be changed.”

“Mom said not to mess up things in other people’s houses.”

Adrian’s fingers tightened on the bedframe. “This isn’t another person’s house.”

She moved an inch toward the center.

At the door, he heard her call, “Adrian?”

“What?”

“Tomorrow, can you buy the smallest can of formula?”

“I’ll buy a large one.”

She considered that. “Do you have enough money?”

The house manager coughed into his hand.

“Yes,” Adrian said.

“Okay. But don’t borrow from loan sharks.”

In the corridor, Ethan handed Adrian his phone. Claire’s death record filled the screen. She had died the previous month after a long illness.

“The lab will have a preliminary result by nine,” Ethan said. “I can also trace where Claire lived, who paid the bills, and whether she tried to contact us.”

“Trace everything.”

The bedroom door opened a crack. Mia peeked out with the rabbit under her arm. “I wasn’t listening. I only need the bathroom.”

Adrian turned around. “I’ll show you.”

He walked slowly enough for the huge slippers to keep up. At the bathroom, Mia stopped before the marble sink, which came nearly to her shoulders.

“Too tall,” she said.

Adrian looked around as if a lower sink might appear if he disapproved strongly enough. Finally, he brought the small bench from the dressing table and tested it with one hand before allowing her to climb.

Mia washed carefully. She used very little soap.

“You can use more,” he said.

“Then it will run out.”

“We have more.”

She glanced at the unopened bottles lined beside the basin. “All of them?”

“All of them.”

She pressed the pump one more time and smiled at the foam. The expression disappeared so quickly that Adrian almost wondered if he had imagined it.

One slipper fell off. He crouched, put it back in front of her, and waited.

“It’s backward,” Mia whispered.

Ethan turned his head and laughed.

The Rejected Luna’s Rise

The Rejected Luna’s Rise

They were already married for three years when Alpha Damian Zeus’s long-lost first love, Lily, returned bringing along a five-year-old pup.

Luna Ariana Volkstane slid the formal rejection request across the table. "Let's end this bond. It's better for you, me, and your first love."

He just smirked. "You want me to reject you? You think you can break our bond that easily?"

So she did. Ariana cut ties with him completely, poured herself into her career, and rose to global fame as a legendary healer, her knowledge of rare herbs, wolf anatomy, and ancient magic sought after across continents.

The powerful suitors lined up. The Alpha of an overseas empire whispered, "Ariana, hurry up and perform the severing ritual. I can't wait to claim you." A powerful pack leader vowed, "I'll be there with you the day you break the bond." A legendary wolf attorney promised, "I'll handle your rejection case with the pack council myself."

Ariana just rubbed her temples. It's not that she didn't want the split, she wanted it more than anything, it's just that the Alpha she was mated to refused to let go.

Finally, she announced, "Whoever can officially get me rejected, I'll put you at the head table of my bond-breaking celebration."

Not long after, Alpha Damian was served the official rejection request right in the middle of an emergency pack council meeting. That same afternoon, he was attacked by rogues at the gates of his own territory.

When Ariana showed up at the pack infirmary with healing herbs, she repeated calmly, "Let's sever the mate bond. It's better for you, me, and everyone else."

But the cold, untouchable Alpha pulled her into his arms, his eyes blood-red with fury. "You want me to reject you? Over my dead body."
