Chapter 3 Three

I was out of my seat in the next second, rushing to the administrative building.

I got there in five seconds despite its distance from the teaching building.

"Miss Valentino, what seems to be the issue?" Mrs Peppy asked the second I barged into her office.

She's an earth witch with a mix of wolf in her genes so she's lived longer than most witches and she's spent it in this same position, doing what's best for the academy.

But this time, she was wrong

"There's a mistake. You can't put Kaelen and me in the same group, it makes no sense!"

"You don't have to yell, I might be old but I still have very active hearing."

"I'm sorry," I took a deep breath, "but please. Change this. I'm sure there was a mistake somewhere."

"No. This was decided by the seers, no one can change it."

"What could they have possibly seen that requires me to work with that idiot?"

The door pushed open and said idiot stormed in.

"Whatever the fuck is happening with the system, change it, Ma'am. I can't work with her, she's selfish, ignorant, proud and did I mention selfish? She'll get us killed!"

"I'm standing right here you fool and you're lying about everything else but Mrs Peppy, I agree with him on one thing. We can't work together. You know our family history! My father won't let this happen!"

Instead of replying, she pushed forward a paper.

"That's my Father's.. signature," Kaelen muttered, and right next to his, was my father's own.

So this is what he was talking about the other night.

"So you see, my hands are tied. But what I can do to make things.. easier is –"

"Please tell me you can change their minds," Kaelen begged and I rolled my eyes.

He doesn't have to act like I'm such a despicable partner to work with. I get it, his family hates mine but this is a little bit too harsh.

"No, that is set in stone. What I can do is add the new student to your team. He's alone and I don't trust him with any other group. You both will teach him everything he needs to know about the Academy and help him understand the missions and what's at stake."

"You are on a roll today Ma'am," Kaelen hissed, "first you join me with this insufferable girl and now you're adding an outcast to our team. Awesome!" He slammed his fist on her table, making the old woman jump in fright before regaining her composure.

"He's no longer an outcast," I snapped, rolling my eyes.

"Are you that easy? He stands up for you once and here you are, fighting for his honour," he drawled, his voice filled with emotion.

"You both, please continue this argument somewhere else. I won't visit the infirmary on your account."

I was out of there in seconds, fuming with rage.

There was no point in attending classes that day, I wouldn't be able to focus on anything.

Besides, I had read ahead during the holidays and sparring won't start for another week.

I'm good on breathing the same air as that bastard.

When I got back from my run, the twins were at my door.

"So? How did it go?" Leah asked with concern.

"How did what go and why aren't you guys in class?"

"We came looking for you. We were worried. Did you get her to change it? He came back really grumpy."

"She didn't change it but she added Zaren to the list and I don't even know how to feel about that. He's a shadow mage, there's a reason why we don't let them get too close."

"I'm sure you'll figure it out," Leah rubbed my back as I settled on my bed, "you always do."

"So, now that all of that is resolved, let me see it!"

"See what, Luna? Why are you so excited?"

"The Revel Party!"

"There's still like.. four days before it. Why are you so excited? Do you want to dump your boyfriend and get a new one?"

"No, I actually like this one. He might last through the school year but I'm going to get you a boyfriend and I need this night to go perfectly for that to happen."

"Leah please get your sister some blood, I think she's suffering from hunger."

"Oh come on! You know I have to get you dressed perfectly, nothing exciting happens in this school anyway."

"So I'm now your entertainment? I don't even wanna go to the damn thing. It's just a chance to show off and I'm not interested."

"Your father won't let you live that down, yunno," Leah sighed, "you'll have to attend."

Before I could answer, a buzz came on my Winki.

"Ooh, he's calling you on your personal device! He likes you!" Luna squealed like a little, sugar high child.

"What is she talking about?" I asked as I went over to my Winki on the table. "Wait, how did Kaelen get my magical code? Who gave it to him?" I hissed.

"Not me!"

"Not me either! I'd never betray you like that," Luna answered shakily.

The beep kept coming and out of irritation, I clicked on it.

"What is wrong with you?! Why are you so hellbent on crossing all my boundaries today?" I snarled the second his face came into view. "And put on a fucking shift!"

"You love what you see, huh?"

"Kaelen Thorne!"

"Okay, calm yourself, I don't want to fight. For now at least."

"Who cares what you want?"

"Trust me, I know you're as exhausted as I am but keep pretending. It's your forte."

"What do you want?"

"A temporary truce."

"Ooh!" Luna clapped excitedly from the other side of the room but the icy look I gave her changed her expression immediately.

I loved the girl but sometimes she drives me insane.

"A truce?"

"You know what's at stake. We're to finish assigned missions all through the year and as dangerous as they all are, they're just preparing us for the big one at the end. Killing a demon. We can't do that if we don't work together and if we fail–"

"We'll die."

"Smart girl," he muttered and I felt some flicker in my chest before I squeezed it to death. "We will train together, send over your schedule and I'll create the perfect time for us to do that."

"What about Zaren?"

"I don't care about that outcast, he's your responsibility."

And he turned off his Winki.

"Is it just me or do the both of you have a really sexual energy?"

"She's going to kill you," Leah warned her sister before I gave chase.
