Chapter 4

When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in my bedroom at home.

I touched my stomach and felt an emptiness.

Leo , you have once again killed our child!

And made it so that I will never be able to become a mother!

Tears slid down my face, soaking the pillow.

Thinking about everything that happened, I couldn’t help but tremble.

I still remember when we just had our wedding. Leo , his gentle actions holding me in his arms.

In his embrace, we dreamed about the future.

I smiled and said, “Let’s have a child.”

The man hesitated, fumbling with his words, unwilling to speak.

Finally, with his eyes full of concern for me, he said, “Wendy, there’s no rush for children! Your body has just recovered, so there's no need to hurry to have a child!”

So, he had been selfish even before this.

In fact, the reason he married me was because he feared that once my throat was healed, I would overshadow Cici .

I called my best friend who was abroad and agreed to go for throat treatment.

At that moment, Leo came back from outside, his body carrying the coldness of the air. He hypocritically asked,

“Wife, where are you going in a few days?”

I put down the phone and shook my head, “Nowhere, the doctor asked me to go for a check-up.”

We locked eyes, and I could no longer see the love in his eyes.

Leo , you were the one who betrayed me first!

He took my hand, and the subtle disgust in his eyes was something I caught.

“Wendy, Mom asked me to take you home, is that okay?”

I looked at his unfamiliar face, almost asking him, but I swallowed it all back.

It’s time to end everything, I silently thought, and went back one last time.

But as soon as I stepped through the door, I saw Cici sitting next to my mother-in-law, Felicia, on the sofa, speaking intimately.

Seeing this, I couldn’t help but feel my eyes sting with pain.

For all these years, every time my mother-in-law saw me, it was either mockery or deliberate ridicule.

I swallowed the bitterness rising in my heart and turned away from them.

But my mother-in-law immediately became impatient, her tone unkind, “As a daughter-in-law, haven’t you even seen your mother-in-law? Don’t you know to pour a cup of tea?!”

“You can’t bear my son’s children, just leave! Don’t stand in my way!”

Cici , sitting next to her, looked seemingly understanding but was actually mocking.

“She survived the fire, which was already hard enough. Godmother, who knows, maybe she lost her ability to have children in the fire! So don’t be too hard on her!”

Then, she handed me a steaming teapot with a sneer.

“Since you survived the fire, Wendy, then pour a cup of tea for godmother!”

She forced me to hold the cup and kept pouring hot water.

I screamed from the burns as she pressed my head down.

Cici looked disgusted, “Wendy, after running out of the fire, how come you can’t even handle a little burn? Don’t you want to pour tea for godmother?”

My fingertips were scorched red, some spots even forming blisters.

My already scarred hands turned bright red, making people feel a mix of pity and laughter.

She stepped back, spilling the teapot on the ground.

“How scary!”

I glanced at my hands, skillfully hiding them in my sleeves.

“What’s scary? ...”

Leo rushed over upon hearing this, quickly embracing Cici .

She pointed at my hands with a pitiful expression, eyes red, saying, “Leo, Wendy’ hands, they’re so scary!”
