Introduction

My name is Lorelei, and I once had the perfect life—until I lost everything overnight.

My ex-husband destroyed my mother's company, my grandmother lay dying in the ICU—and when I had nowhere left to turn, Dante Ashford appeared.

This ruthless billionaire offered me a devil's bargain: become his secret mistress in exchange for his help.

I told myself we were from different worlds, that I shouldn't fall.

But beneath his icy exterior, in those rare moments of tenderness, I couldn't stop myself from plummeting into the abyss.

Until that scandal broke—when he threw me to the wolves without hesitation to protect his fiancée's reputation.

In that moment, the truth became crystal clear: after all this time, I meant nothing to him.

I was just a disposable tool.

So I left.

I locked my heart away.

Four years later, this once untouchable, cold-hearted man is on his knees before me, eyes filled with desperation and remorse, his voice hoarse with pleading: "Don't marry him, Lorelei. Please... give me one more chance."

But as the buried truth between us slowly surfaces, I discover that from the very beginning, our relationship was wrapped in lies.

Can I ever trust this man who has hurt me again and again?

Chapter 1

Dante's POV

Content Warning: Dark romance with manipulation, power dynamics, and morally grey hero.

Sandalwood. Milk. Something impossibly warm and sweet.

It cut through the city's usual smells like a blade through silk, wrapping around me until I could barely think. I turned to find the source and saw her—strawberry-gold hair like flame under the gallery lights, shivering as she stepped into the cold of the balcony.

She reached for a champagne flute. A gust of wind caught it, tipping the glass. Champagne sloshed over the rim. She tried to catch it, overcorrected—

The glass shattered against the concrete.

She dropped to her knees, reaching with bare hands for the broken shards.

I was moving before I'd made a conscious decision. My hand closed around her wrist, feeling her pulse flutter beneath my palm, quick and light as a bird. The sandalwood scent was overwhelming—definitely her, this scent that cracked something open in my chest.

"Don't," I heard myself say, voice rougher than intended. "You'll cut yourself."

She looked up at me, pupils dilating slightly as her gray-blue eyes met mine. The override system went silent for the first time in twelve years, and in the void of its absence, something primal and overwhelming surged through me.

Desire. Need. Hunger.

I didn't understand—

48 Hours Earlier

The private jet touched down at Teterboro just after midnight, three hours behind schedule. Adrian waited on the tarmac. "Welcome home, Mr. Ashford."

Home. The word tasted wrong.

Grandfather was waiting in his study. "Try to set a wedding date before the end of the month," he said, then left.

I remained there, staring at the whiskey, Richard Ashford's expectations for his grandson pressing on my shoulders like lead. The engagement to Seraphina—a marriage I could never give her real feeling in.

Because you're broken, the override system whispered. And you know it.

Twelve years of therapy. Twelve years of accepting I would never feel attraction to anyone. Sexual orientation障碍—the diagnosis that explained why every date felt like a performance, why touch never sparked anything.

I pulled out my phone, scrolled to Seraphina's contact. The call went to voicemail after three rings. I didn't leave a message.

Maybe in our world, love was a luxury none of us could afford.

The next evening, Felix dragged me to a gallery opening in Chelsea. "You can't hide in that townhouse forever," he said. "Your grandfather will read isolation as weakness."

So I went, performing the socially acceptable version of myself.

"You look miserable," Felix observed. "Your grandfather called asking about the prenup."

"Might as well get it over with," I said.

"Hell of an attitude toward marriage."

The gallery suddenly felt claustrophobic. I needed air, moving toward the balcony and pushing through the glass doors.

The cold hit immediately, sharp and clear. I leaned against the railing, breathing in the night air.

Then I smelled it.

Sandalwood. Milk. Something impossibly warm and sweet—it bypassed every defense the override system had built, hitting something inside me I didn't know still existed.

Movement near the balcony door caught my attention. A server stepped out carrying champagne. Behind him, stepping into the cold, was a woman with strawberry-gold hair.

The scent grew stronger.

She smiled at the server, reaching for champagne, and I saw her shiver—

Now

"Don't," my voice came out rougher than intended. "You'll cut yourself."

The moment she looked up at me, the world narrowed to the space between us. Her eyes were extraordinary—gray-blue, like rain clouds over the ocean. The override system fell silent for the first time in years.

Twelve years. Twelve years I'd thought myself incapable of feeling this.

Yet my body responded to this stranger's proximity with almost painful intensity, that scent wrapping around both of us until I couldn't tell where it ended and I began.

"Thank you," she said softly, her voice sending a shiver down my spine. "But... could you let go of my hand now?"

I forced my fingers to release, though every instinct screamed to maintain contact. Losing the feel of her skin against mine felt like physical trauma.

She stood gracefully, smoothing her dress with trembling hands. I needed to say something. Ask her name—

"Dante Ashford." The voice came from behind me—pleasant tone, hostile edge. "Long time no see."

I turned slowly. Marco DeLuca. My distant cousin, though we'd never been close.

But it wasn't Marco's appearance that froze my blood.

It was the way he moved—approaching the woman, sliding his arm around her waist with casual possession.

"This is my wife, Lorelei." His smile was sharp. "You've been overseas all these years, so you probably haven't heard."

The word hit like a physical blow.

Wife.

The world narrowed to that single word, shattering this connection I'd felt for the first time in twelve years. The override system snapped back with brutal efficiency, cold and precise: Of course she's married. Of course the only woman you feel anything for belongs to someone else.

I watched Lorelei, watched her expression shift into something carefully neutral—a mask I recognized because I wore the same one.

"Pleasure to meet you, Mr. Ashford," she said, voice perfectly polite and utterly without warmth.

Marco guided her away, making excuses about needing to speak with someone inside. His hand rested possessively at her waist—but just before the glass door closed behind them, Lorelei glanced back.

Her gray-blue eyes found mine through the glass, lingering longer than politeness required.

Then the door shut and she disappeared into the crowd.

I was left alone on the empty balcony, the ghost of sandalwood in my nostrils, the phantom sensation of her pulse beneath my palm.

Why her?

Eight million people in this city. I'd met hundreds, thousands of women over the past twelve years, each encounter confirming the same diagnosis—I felt nothing for anyone.

Yet now, my body burned for Marco DeLuca's wife, a woman whose name I'd only just learned.

The sandalwood lingered in the cold air, pulling at something in my chest I'd thought long dead.

By the end of the month, I might be setting a wedding date with Seraphina. A political marriage, a union I could never give her real feeling in.

That was before I knew I could still feel this.

Now—

My phone vibrated in my pocket. Grandfather's name appeared on the screen.

I let it go to voicemail, staring at the glass door. Lorelei had disappeared into the depths of the gallery, but the scent lingered, the sensation—the feel of her pulse beneath my fingers—burned into my memory.

Why her? Why now?

"You actually thought I cared about you?" His smirk was sharp, almost cruel.

Heat rushed to my face, burning with humiliation. My chest ached — not from his words alone, but from the sick realization that I had trusted him. That I had let myself believe he was different.
I was so, so stupid.
