Chapter 3
Nyra’s POV
“Rowan…?” Kayla's loud voice brought me back to consciousness. It was a really annoying way to be snapped into reality.
It took a while for me to regain my orientation. But then, I soon realized the awkward position I was in and why exactly it made Kayla shout that way. At first it felt like I was lying down in the air but soon I realized I was in Rowan's arms.
What…? I shrieked in my mind as I wondered if he was intentionally trying to get me in trouble. Why would he hold me like that in front of the people he had come to see? Now I would be caught in the crossfire as I looked over to see the anger exuding from Kayla and her mother.
My eyelids slowly parted from him to see Kayla and her mother standing with the entire elites of the pack as they stood, staring in despair at their highly anticipated guest, standing with their most hated maid in his arms.
Though I was uncomfortable with my position, I just couldn't get enough of seeing them in so much misery.
“What exactly happened?” Hilda asked, like she was concerned but it was simply difficult for someone like her to conceal annoyance. It was second nature to her whenever she was around me. “How did she end up like this?”
I was so afraid of where all of that was going. So afraid to the point that I couldn't get myself to ask Rowan to put me down. I felt like I would be doing something awfully wrong by speaking at that moment. Hilda had always been all about me keeping quiet whenever royalty was speaking.
“I should ask you why you decided to send her on such an impossible mission. She nearly got mobbed by rogues…” Rowan spoke up for me, and it was really odd for me to know that an Alpha had me in his arms and was defending me against my horrible Luna and her daughter who he was appointed to meet up with. “Really had me wondering who the real rogue is…”
“Uhm… I think I'm okay now…you can put me down…” I finally whispered to him as I just didn't want Hilda and Kayla to get any crazier than they already were. They looked like they could come over there and rip me right out of his hands.
“Oh okay…” Rowan was really hesitant to do that, but he had to. “Are you sure you're okay…?”
“I'm fine…” I said as I slowly brought my feet to the ground. I still felt weak from the sudden shock that knocked me out earlier. My knees were shaking really bad and I just couldn't keep myself stable, but I found a way to do just that.
“Rowan? What are you doing with her? Where are your people?” Kayla stood, with a red dress which was looking even more seductive than the one she had on before. “Did you come here all by yourself…?”
Kayla's confused speech made me look around to find out he had actually come there all by himself. That was odd for an Alpha of his caliber.
“Well… I had to step out of the car to go save her. They should be here in no time…” Rowan spoke with so much confidence as he bent over to pick the flowers. “Here are the flowers for the bouquet you wanted to make…”
I tried all I could to hold back the laughter which was trying everything that it could to break out of my lips. It was really wild that Rowan didn't know the flowers had been for him. Just what the heck was Kayla going to do with that?
As I noticed they were looking at me, I tried to feign a really hard cough as I didn't want any further trouble from the Luna. But the force of amusement overpowered me.
“What's so funny?” Kayla questioned me angrily as she noticed.
“Nothing…I'm sorry…” I decided to get serious from that point as I just didn't know what was going to happen from that point.
My situation was actually more uncertain than I thought. There were just so many unsettled questions in my head and I didn't have an answer to any of them. Was Rowan really going to take me from that place? Was my life really about to change for good? It was odd that something good was about to happen to me for once in the chaotic life I was living.
“I don't wish to prolong this meeting anymore, as I've gotten the very thing, I'm here for…” Rowan didn't seem bothered by the gravity of his words. “I've found my mate already…”
The entire elite class or the pack stood in awe as they listened in silence and anticipation to hear the bombshell. I was really wondering what reaction they were going to give to that.
“And who's that?” Kayla broke the silence instantly as she seemed to be the only one getting the worst of all that was happening. She was almost turning blue in the face as it was beginning to look like her greatest fear was happening right in her presence.
I pretended to act remorseful with my facial expressions. But deep down, I couldn't wait to see her break down when she would hear he was actually mated to me.
“Your way of asking things is really impolite. I would have chosen to teach you some manners, but I think it'll intrigue you even more to know it isn't you…” Rowan was so merciless with that, and I could feel it from where I stood. “The maid is my mate and I'm claiming her right away…”
Just like a sack of salt, with no balance at all, Kayla fell to the floor. The shock was just too much for the poor girl to bear.
“Kayla, no…!” Her mother quickly made for the floor where her daughter had fallen and tried checking on her sleeping princess.
Watching that left me wondering what exactly it was with the Alpha and making people drop unconscious with his announcements.
Before I could think one more idle thought, he took my hand forcefully.
“Any objections?” Rowan asked with a tone that sounded much more like a dare. Surely no one was going to say a single word to that.
“But Rowan…” Alpha Ian, Kayla's father stepped forward with his beta like they wanted to negotiate some sort of deal with Rowan. “You can't take her…she's not royal blood and not up to…”
“With all I've given your pack, I don't think you have the right to tell me who I should or shouldn't choose. Perhaps you wish to go back to being without those benefits…” Rowan shut him up with that one instantly and that made me sure beyond doubt that my life was about taking a crazy turn.
The silence was broken again by the car that seemed to be the one Rowan had been speaking of. There were actually three cars in all as two more followed. All were black SUVs which breathed nothing but class and royalty.
“Our ride is here, mate…” Rowan turned to me. “Shall we?”
I couldn't dare to refuse. Though I couldn't believe it, I was on my way to being Luna or so I thought, until the sudden icy gust from the open SUV door carried a scent and a shadow I’d never felt before, a warning that whatever waited inside might change everything far more dangerously than becoming Luna ever could.
