Chapter 7 What She Knows

He found the note under his door at six in the morning.

Four words. No name.

"Don't go to breakfast."

Good quality paper. Not the grey sheets the Academy gave Null-floor students.

He put it in his pocket and went to breakfast.

Lira Voss was already at his table.

Silver Crystal. Straight back. Both hands around a cup she wasn't drinking from. She looked up when he sat down.

"I said don't come," she said.

"I wanted to see what you'd do if I came anyway."

Something moved in her face. Not irritation. Closer to satisfaction. Like he'd answered a question she hadn't asked out loud.

"Your Skill," she said. "Devour."

He kept eating.

"I know what it becomes."

The spoon stopped.

He set it down. Met her eyes. "How."

"Because I've seen it before." She leaned forward slightly. "Three years ago. Eastern district academy. A student with the same Skill. They found him fourteen days after Awakening sitting alone in his room with every student on his floor unconscious in the corridor outside."

The cafeteria noise moved around them like it belonged to a different world.

"He hadn't touched them," Lira said. "Fifteen meters away. Through walls. He took something from every single one without leaving his room." She didn't look away from his face. "Range. The Skill developed range."

Kael thought about last night.

The corridor. Six people. The awareness spreading outward from his chest. The hunger mapping everything they carried without asking his permission.

[Range sensitivity developing - 4 meters. Expanding.]

"What happened to him," he said.

"The Hollow Court took him within twenty four hours. Containment procedure. Compensation package. A document for his family to sign." She looked at the table. "Nobody saw him again."

"You're telling me this because you want something," Kael said.

"I'm telling you because their representative arrives at Veyrath tonight." She looked up. "You have thirty six hours before they move on you. And nobody in this building is going to stop them."

"Why do you know all of this."

A pause. One beat too long.

"Lira."

"Because my father is on the Hollow Court," she said.

Around them three hundred students ate breakfast and knew nothing about what was being said at the table by the window.

Kael looked at her.

And he saw it now what had lived underneath her stillness since the first day on the shuttle. Since she had looked at his empty collar and said you're the Null without any change in expression.

Not calculation.

Guilt.

"He sent you here," Kael said.

"Yes."

"To watch Devour develop."

"Yes."

"And report back."

"Yes." Flat. Clean. She wasn't going to dress it up and she knew dressing it up would be the worst thing she could do in front of someone whose entire life had been people dressing things up. "Watch the Null. Catalogue the Skill. Flag the moment it became what they were looking for."

"Did you flag it."

The pause this time was different. Longer. The pause of a person who has finished deciding and is living with what they decided.

"No," she said.

"Why."

She looked at him directly. No armor. "Because you got up. Every time. Every corridor. Every person who came at you with rank and size and everything the System handed them." Something moved in her face not soft, but the layer just underneath soft. "I have been in rooms full of people given everything my whole life. I have never once watched someone given nothing choose to keep going anyway." She paused. "I couldn't hand that to them."

The morning light lay across the table between them.

"What does it become," Kael said quietly. "The final tier."

"Four tiers total," she said. "The student reached all four in fourteen days." One finger. "Contact absorption, touch and take." Second finger. "Selective absorption you choose what." Third finger. "Range no contact needed." She stopped.

"Lira."

Fourth finger.

"Assimilation," she said. "Every Skill. Every Class ability. Every System power a person has all of it gone. Permanently. Within range. Without contact." She held his gaze and didn't look away from what she was saying. "He was asleep when it happened. Devour reached the fourth tier and took from seventeen people while he was dreaming. He woke up and didn't understand what he'd done. Their Crystals were still ranked. But there was nothing left inside them."

Kael sat with it.

Layer by layer.

Asleep.

He thought about last night. Six people in a corridor. The hunger reaching for all of them at once while he was fully awake and barely holding it back.

What happened when he was sleeping.

"How long between third tier and fourth," he said.

"Four days," Lira said.

Four days.

The Culling started in two.

He pressed his thumb against the locket through his shirt. Felt the edge bite into his skin. Used it the way he always used it fixed point, real thing, stay here.

"The representative," he said. "What does he do when he arrives."

"Goes to Varek first. Gets your assessment notes and your dormitory location." She paused. "Then he comes for you."

"His name," Kael said.

"Cael Maren." She said it carefully. Like the name had weight she didn't want to drop carelessly. "Fifteen years doing this. He has never once left a target unflagged." She looked at her cup. "And he does not come alone."

Kael looked at the table.

Thought about Varek. About the seven he had given in the assessment. About a man who had spent six years trying to become something different from what he had been.

"Is there anything that would make Maren uncertain," Kael said. "Anything that would make him go back for confirmation before he moves."

Lira looked at him carefully. "What are you thinking."

"I don't know yet," Kael said honestly. "But uncertain men move slowly. And slow gives me time."

Lira was quiet for a moment.

"If his verification came back showing nothing," she said slowly. "If your external System file showed Null rank zero, no Skill assigned he would question whether the flag was accurate." She paused. "He would go back for secondary confirmation." Another pause. "Which takes days."

"Can that be done," Kael said.

"Not by a student," she said. "Not without someone with deep System access and a very specific reason to use it." She looked at him. "Someone who has been watching you since your first assessment. Someone who gave a Null a seven and has been buying you time since before you knew you needed it."

They looked at each other across the table.

"Go to Varek," she said. "Today. Before Maren reaches the gate." She stood. Straightened her collar. "And Kael " She stopped.

"What."

"When Maren finds the override and he will find it eventually he will go to Varek first." Her voice was quiet. "Varek knows that. He has always known that." She picked up her untouched cup. "Whatever he gives you today he is paying for with something he cannot get back."

She walked away.

Kael sat alone at the table.

He picked up his spoon.

Finished his breakfast.

Every bite.

Then he stood and walked toward the combat hall corridor where Varek ran early morning drills and where a man with a dark Crystal and six years of quiet penance was about to do the most expensive thing he had done since he stopped being what he used to be.

He didn't see Harren at the cafeteria entrance.

Didn't see him take out his data-slate.

Didn't see him write one line and send it.

Didn't see who received it.
