Vincent DeLuca does not deny it. Neither does his family. They offer ten minutes in the priest's office and a simple arrangement: the boy will be provided for quietly, and Alexandra will still be Mrs. DeLuca.
They have misjudged her.
This was never a wedding. It was a merger, and Alexandra is the only person in the room who read every clause. She sets the ring on a pew, orders her security chief to recover the signed papers, and walks out of St. Patrick's before the ink is dry.
Her father does not stop her.
By tonight, the DeLucas will find out how much of their empire was only ever borrowed.

Chapter 1

Alexandra's POV

Alexandra Moretti has not taken a single step down the aisle when the cathedral doors open behind her.

A nurse comes in with a newborn and a birth record. The mother is in surgery. The father, she says, is the groom.

——

The Moretti convoy halted outside St. Patrick’s at eleven fifty-eight. Through the tinted glass, I watched half of Manhattan’s underworld file into the cathedral.

My father offered his hand. "You can still make them wait," Marco Moretti said.

"They've waited three years for this alliance."

"I meant Vincent."

I stepped onto Fifth Avenue, smoothing the fitted waist of my ivory gown. "Vincent has kept me waiting often enough."

My father didn't reply. At sixty-two, he had built his empire by never wasting a threat. He offered his arm, the Moretti signet flashing in the September sun.

Ahead, Vincent DeLuca waited at the altar—tall, composed, and dangerously charming. He whispered something to his younger brother, Luca, a smile curving his mouth, but it vanished the second he met my eyes.

The organ swelled. Guests turned. But before I took a single step, the heavy doors opened behind me, and a woman's voice severed the music.

"Excuse me. I need to speak to Vincent DeLuca."

A nurse stood in the entrance, breathless, rain on her wool coat over navy scrubs. In her arms lay a newborn wrapped in a pale blue hospital blanket. "The baby's mother was admitted to St. Catherine's this morning. She developed complications after delivery and went into emergency surgery. Her name is Sienna Caruso."

A murmur rippled through the DeLuca pews. I knew the name. Everyone did. Sienna’s father ran Brooklyn clubs under DeLuca protection. When I had asked about her presence at past charity events, Vincent called her an old family friend.

His face remained a mask. "And what does that have to do with me?"

The nurse looked down at the child, then back up. "She listed you as the father."

The whispers died.

She pulled a folded document from her coat. "She said if anything happened, her son goes to you. I tried the emergency numbers. No one answered. His name is on the birth record."

Vincent stared at the paper. He didn’t take it. The child began to cry—a raw, hungry sound echoing off the vaulted ceilings, far too real for the diamonds and white roses.

"Say something," I said.

"Alexandra, this isn't the place."

"You chose the place when you invited both families."

"I didn't invite her."

"No. You just gave her a reason to come."

Carlo DeLuca, Vincent's father, rose from the front pew. His glare ordered his son to control the room. Vincent finally stepped toward the nurse, looking at the infant’s face. Something shifted in his eyes.

Not shock. Recognition.

My father saw it too. "You knew."

"I knew Sienna was pregnant."

"You knew, and you brought me here anyway."

"I didn't know she would deliver today. She told me the child might be mine."

The nurse extended the document again. This time, Vincent took it, read a single line, and handed it to Luca. He turned to me, slipping smoothly into his negotiation persona. Identify the cost, contain it, move forward.

"The boy is mine," he said.

The admission landed like a gunshot. A DeLuca aunt crossed herself. Cell phones appeared despite the guards.

Vincent stepped closer to me. "This changes a private matter. It does not change what today means."

"A private matter just crashed our wedding in a hospital blanket."

"The child was conceived before we finalized the engagement."

"You proposed six months ago."

His hesitation lasted a fraction of a second too long.

"That's what I thought," I said.

"The alliance is bigger than this," Vincent countered. "Your father understands that."

Marco’s gaze turned to ice. "Do not use me to speak to my daughter."

Carlo finally intervened. "Marco, we should take ten minutes in the priest's office. Vincent has acknowledged the boy. He will be provided for discreetly. None of this diminishes your position, Alexandra. You will be Mrs. DeLuca, and your children will remain the legitimate heirs."

Vincent reached for my hand. "We finish the ceremony. We handle this as a family."

I stepped back. "You stood at that altar expecting me to hand you the keys to my empire, while another woman delivered your son alone."

His restraint cracked. "This doesn't have to destroy what we built."

"We didn't build anything. Our lawyers did."

"Think carefully."

"I have." I slid the diamond off my finger.

"Don't act out of humiliation," he warned.

"You really think this is about embarrassment? What do you call walking away from a merger worth hundreds of millions?"

"Good judgment."

Instead of handing it to him, I placed the ring on the edge of the nearest pew. The click of platinum against mahogany rang through the silence.

"The engagement is over."

Carlo’s face darkened. "You cannot dissolve a binding agreement over an illegitimate child."

"I'm dissolving it because your son concealed a liability, lied during negotiations, and assumed the Morettis would swallow the insult to protect a deal. You treated this like an acquisition, Vincent. You just mispriced the asset." I pivoted toward our security chief. "Enzo. Recover every document delivered to the DeLuca representatives this morning. Dowry schedules, port-access authorizations, escrow transfers. Then call the banks. Freeze every authorization bearing today's date."

Luca stiffened. "Those papers were signed."

"They were strictly conditional on the marriage."

"Our attorneys have copies."

"Copies don't release funds."

Moretti men instantly rose from the pews, fanning out toward the side rooms.

Carlo rounded on my father. "You're allowing this?"

Marco didn't look at Carlo. He looked at me. "The Moretti family follows Alexandra's orders."

"Marco, control her."

My father finally turned. "You mistook my refusal to control my daughter for an inability to do so. That was your first mistake. Asking me to correct it for your benefit is your second."

Vincent’s voice dropped. "If you walk out, there is no repairing this."

The nurse still stood there, clutching his crying newborn, stranded in a turf war over money and pride. I unpinned my veil and draped it over the abandoned pew.

As I walked past him, Vincent caught my wrist. Every Moretti guard in the cathedral aimed a weapon. I stared at his hand until he let go.

"You're turning one betrayal into a war," he said.

"No. You did that when you assumed I would accept it."

My father fell in step beside me. The Moretti side of the cathedral emptied. At the doors, I glanced back. Vincent stood paralyzed in the center aisle, his newborn crying on one side, my ring gleaming on the other. He had lost control of the ceremony. He hadn't yet grasped what else he had lost.

"Go meet your son, Vincent. Because by the time I'm finished, this wedding won't be the only thing you wish you hadn't thrown away."
