Introduction
Chapter 1
The silver polish burned the raw skin around my cuticles, but I didn't stop scrubbing. Better the harsh sting of chemical solvent than the suffocating weight pressing against my ribs.
"You ought to rest today, Lydia," Maya said softly, setting a steaming mug of black tea on the polished mahogany vanity beside me. "No one expects you to handle his personal effects so soon."
"There's no one else left to pack them anyway," I said, my voice flat, empty of the warmth it used to carry a week ago. "If I don't polish Leo's signet ring, Uncle Julian will hand it over to the estate liquidators by sunset."
Maya crouched at my side, her fingers hovering over my knee before settling gently. "It's only been seven days. Grief doesn't disappear just because the estate lawyers demand order."
"Grief doesn't pay for security guards or funeral arrangements either."
We sat in heavy silence after that. Rain lashed against the high arched windows of the Mark Estate, blurring the sprawling grey-stone manicured grounds outside. Downstairs in the courtyard, engines idled—black luxury SUVs carrying men in tailored suits and concealed holsters. In our world, power was wrapped in custom silk, but the violence beneath it was as raw as open iron.
Legitimate wards didn't handle syndicate affairs. Illegitimate orphans like me fetched tea, managed memorial funds, buried their older brothers, and kept their mouths shut when the men made decisions.
"He used to whistle," I murmured, the word slipping out before I could catch it. "When he cleaned his handguns in the study. Some ridiculous jazz tune he picked up in Chicago."
Maya squeezed my hand. "You'll keep his memory alive, Lydia. Give yourself time."
"Time," I echoed, looking at my warped reflection in the silver band of my brother's ring.
That was when heavy footsteps echoed down the marble hallway. Precise, unhurried, echoing with the effortless authority of a man who owned every square foot of stone beneath his boots.
Uncle Julian.
Maya stood up so quickly her tea spilled over the rim of the porcelain cup. Julian Mark had that effect on people. He had it on me too, though I had learned long ago to lock my spine straight and never let him see me flinch.
"Lydia." He paused at the doorway, hands draped behind his back, the gold Mark crest gleaming on his lapel. The very same crest my brother wore before he was executed in an alleyway three miles from our border. "Walk with me."
"I'm sorting Leo's things."
"Leave them."
Maya took the polishing cloth from my frozen fingers before I could argue. She gave me a tight, pleading look that said everything: don't fight him.
I followed Julian down the grand gallery, past portraits of ancestors who had built the Mark Syndicate on blood, extortion, and high-society political bribes. He kept a brisk pace, forcing me to hurry to match his stride. I hated myself for moving faster to keep up.
"You look pale," he remarked casually as we reached the glass terrace overlooking the dripping gardens.
"I buried my brother seven days ago. Pale feels appropriate."
"Which brings me to the point of this conversation." He stopped, turning to face me. His gray eyes were entirely devoid of heat. "The syndicate council convened last night. We have finalized terms with the Blackwood Syndicate."
A sudden, icy drop plunged through my chest. Blackwood. Just hearing the name made my throat taste like copper.
"What terms?"
"A merger. Sealed by marriage." He said it as if he were discussing quarterly earnings or real estate acquisitions. "Yours. To Tristan Blackwood, their primary heir. It closes twenty years of territorial war."
I stopped breathing. He took two steps toward the railing before realizing I was frozen, turning back with mildly annoyed patience.
"Marriage," I whispered, the word like venom on my tongue. "To the family whose enforcer put a bullet through my brother's heart."
"To the family that controls eighty percent of the Manhattan shipping docks, yes."
"They didn't raid a shipping dock, Uncle! They lured Leo to a neutral meeting and executed him in broad daylight!"
"And the man who pulled the trigger—Gideon—is sitting in our subterranean holding cell right now, waiting for the formal exchange," Julian said smoothly, stepping closer. He spoke with a sickening, patronizing gentleness. "You will have your resolution, Lydia. The syndicate will have its peace. Both things will be fulfilled."
"Both things are not going to happen!" My voice trembled, but I forced every drop of strength I had into it. "You are selling me to the monsters who murdered my brother!"
"It isn't a request."
"I don't give a damn what it is!"
"You are an illegitimate ward," Julian said, and for the first time, his pleasant mask slipped, revealing the cold iron underneath. "You have no seat at the council table. You never did. Leo didn't leave you a fortune; he left you alive under my protection. I assumed the last week taught you your exact standing in this house."
The rain drummed against the glass above us, loud and relentless.
"So that's what I am to you," I said, staring at the man who was supposed to be my guardian. "A bartering chip. A trophy to hand over so the men who killed your own nephew can wear me like proof that the debt is settled."
"You are the reason this syndicate doesn't bleed out in a street war," Julian replied coldly. "Gideon will face the council by week's end. I gave my word to the senior captains. That much, I can grant you."
"By week's end."
"Yes."
"And you expect me to believe that?"
"I expect you to remember who feeds you and keeps you safe."
I stared at him—at his crisp tailored suit, his perfectly trimmed beard, the absolute, unwavering arrogance in his posture—and a terrible clarity washed over me.
He was lying.
He was lying to me, and he was lying to the syndicate. I knew how the Mark council operated. I knew what a Blackwood heir was worth in a room full of old men desperate to protect their Swiss bank accounts. Gideon would never face any council. The moment the wedding contracts were signed, Gideon would be quietly escorted out through the sub-basement garage with an apology, a trunk full of unmarked cash, and a slick escort back to Brooklyn.
And no one would ever mention Leo's name again.
"Go to your room," Julian said, misinterpreting my sudden silence as defeat. "We will review the contract arrangements tomorrow."

"Put her down," I try to command, panic threading through my thoughts. "You’ll hurt her."
"She’s ours," the beast insists, possessive and fierce. "Our snowflake."

I shouldn’t care.

Taste of Fate: The Vampire King's Human Mate
He reached for the back of my head and pulled me up just enough to reach my neck. When his fangs slid into me, the pain was instant, electric. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think. My hands found his shoulders, clawing for something to hold. My legs kicked. Tears streamed down my cheeks.
He moaned against my throat as he drank, and the sound was devastating.
