Chapter 67

Third Person POV

Rage boiled his blood.

David had everything going for him. He was handsome, charming, and on his way to the fast track in his career.

He had been born to a moderately wealthy family. Enough money not to be considered middle class. But not enough status to be anywhere near the true cogs of power.

This injustice grated on David his entire life.

It was an aggravating theme. David could excel at something with hard work. But that usually came to nothing in the end compared to the wolves with old bloodlines.

David’s inner wolf gave him stamina and strength above all those pathetic, weak wolfed others. Yet there was always that rich douche with a stronger wolf simply because of their elitest heritage.

David studied hard and crammed on every test in college. Every A was one he earned. But there that one damn kid that got good grades simply because the school did not want to offend their outrageously powerful parents.

David perfected charm. Anything to get out on top. However…what was charm compared to real status and money?

Even his looks meant nothing when those rich bastards could buy good looks. No matter what David did…it was never enough. David hated it.

He swore he would do whatever it took to move up the social latter.

He had been succeeding recently. He had a good, solid position at a famous company. He had a gorgeous lover with her own status.

Then it all began falling apart.

Eillen found herself pregnant. This made her start sprouting nonsense about getting mate bonded. That they should make everything official.

David had laughed in her face. Mated to her? Absolutely not.

No, David had a plan for his future. David would agree to a mate bond with a wolf of correct breeding. David’s offspring would be his ticket in.

Eillen was furious. “I’ll leave you and you will never see me again if you don’t mate bond with me!” She had screamed.

“Then leave.” David told her.

David knew she would not. What would she be without him? Pregnant and nothing.

Eillen had the kid…not that David cared. He refused to have anything to do with her kid. No matter how much she bugged him about it.

‘I told her,’ David thought. ‘I told her before we got together, I would not claim her. I certainly warned her she would be on her own if she had the baby.’

It got worse when Eillen ran into his ex-girlfriend.

David had been intrigued to hear about Nan’s improved status. He had not thought of her in years. Hearing she was finally free of the little burden she took on improved his mood.

‘Maybe I’ll look Nan up soon,’ David had considered. ‘I’m sure she’ll be happy I forgave her for ruining our relationship.’

Eillen noticed this change. The fighting between them became more frequent as Eillen’s jealousy grew. The stress from this caused David to fall into some…bad habits.

It all came to a head when that rich bastard stole the necklace David’s boss sent him to obtain. The douche even had the nerve to smirk at him! David seethed.

His boss was not happy. He was given one more chance when his boss sent him to a social party to network for the company.

Seeing Nan there…looking gorgeous and well-off…David saw a golden opportunity. He would win her back. She would be his lover…and if he happened to convince her to pay off a few of his gambling debts…

Instead she spit in the face of his generosity! Then he saw that necklace glittering around her neck. He was so distracted by it that he missed his chance to meet with an important figure.

David was fired because of that!

Everything had gone to hell. And he knew exactly who to blame. Her.

Nan. Everything had fallen apart because of her. And now everything would be fixed by her.

Nan’s POV

David turns to me with a look of hate. I feel a prickle of fear. But I beat it down in defiance.

“It’s all your fault!” He growls. I flinch back at the volume.

“What?” I ask in confusion.

“Everything is ruined because of you! Eillen won’t stop picking fights! And I got too behind on some of my gambling debts.”

“How is that my fault?” I question with skepticism.

“It is all because of you. If you had just stayed out of my life, everything would be fine. I would still have my job!”

‘Has this guy been inhaling fumes?’ I think faintly. ‘He has lost his mind.’

I refuse to play along with his delusions. “Those sounds like consequences of your decisions.” I say sternly.

“My actions?! My problems didn’t start until you appeared!” He snarls back.

I visually trace the white knuckled grip he has on his dashboard. The slight slur of his words and the stench of alcohol. The bloodshot veins of his eyes.

‘It looks like he did this on a whim,’ My mind observes. ‘If I can hold out long enough for security to notice…’

I decide to stall for time. “I did not appear in your life! You and your psycho girlfriend keep popping up in mine!”

David waves off my argument. “Semantics. The outcome is still the same.”

“How am I to blame?” I ask demandingly.

“If Eillen had not seen you, she would not be bitching at me-” He rants nonsensically.

I glare at him. “Weren’t you the one telling me she wanted you to be a father to your children?”

“-for that, I would not have needed to take some stress off! Now I’m thousands in debt-”

“Because you decided to gamble away your money, moron!” I argue.

He continues disregarding my words. “-fired because you distracted me at that party!” He growls.

My jaw drops at that. “I distracted you?” I shriek.

The fear I felt before is gone. The fact that I am alone with this angry wolf suddenly no longer matters to me. All that registers in my haze of outrage is that I am being wrongfully accused by my ex-boyfriend.

“You followed me. I told you to leave me alone.” I sat indignantly.

He snorts. “You show up dressed like that at a party I am attending? What was I supposed to think except that you wanted my attention…”

‘There is no way he was this audacious when we dated,’ I think. ‘My teenage self could not have been so blind.’

“Let me out of the car, David.” I say firmly.

“No.” He replies.

“No?” I repeat disbelieving.

“You caused all of this. Now you’re going to help me fix it.” He answers ominously.

“Open the door.” I say slowly.

“See, I knew I recognized that diamond around your neck. It was the same one I was supposed to get for my boss. Then some smug rich guy stole it.”

I am forced to listen to his delusional pity party. My birthday gift suddenly becomes even more precious to me when I realize how much David resents it. ‘I would have kissed Lionel sooner if I had known he won out against David,’ I think in amusement.

“…research when I was fired. Alpha Lionel. That’s the man you’re shacking up with?”

I do not like the strange look on his face. “That’s none of your business.” I say rudely.

“I should thank you, Nan. Thanks to you, I found my easy ticket.” He remarks.

I get a sinking feeling in my stomach. “What do you mean?” I ask with dread.

“I’ll get my money by kidnapping those little brats. When I found out who really bought that necklace…I knew I hit the jackpot. And you’re going to help me.”

Protective fury explodes within me. ‘How dare he?’ I seethe.

“You’ve lost it.” I yell. “I will not be helping you with this, you sick monster.”

David does not react. “Yes, you will.” He proclaims calmly.

“I’ll call the police on you. No, I’ll tell Alpha Lionel what you plan on doing to his daughters.” I threaten.

But my threat does not have the result I expect. David simply sneers at me. Then he leans in close.

I try to back up but there is no more space to move. His disgusting breath burns my nostrils. David then whispers,

“You’ll help me…or I’ll tell him your little secret: That you are wolf-less.”
