Left Behind, I Learned to Live
Fuzzy Melissa · Completed · 7.1k Words
Introduction
In gym class, nobody wanted me on their team until there was no one else left.
At White Elephant exchanges, I always ended up with the worst gift.
Even when classmates invited me out to eat, I somehow wound up covering the bill.
Then I went to college and met Brooke, who always saved me a seat, and Ethan, my boyfriend, who stepped in whenever things got awkward.
For three years, we did everything together.
We rushed to eight a.m. lectures, split DoorDash delivery fees, and walked back from the library at two in the morning after late-night study sessions.
When my parents divorced and neither seemed to want me, Brooke and Ethan stayed.
They even set their phones to alert them whenever I texted.
For the first time, I believed I'd found people who would never leave me behind.
Then came the night of our final exams.
We were at a party on the second floor of a downtown hotel when every phone in the room blared with a tornado warning.
People screamed and rushed toward the stairs, desperate to reach the hotel's designated storm shelter downstairs.
Ethan grabbed Brooke and headed for the exit.
I was right behind them when he shoved a banquet table out of his way.
The table scraped across the floor and slid directly into my path.
My foot caught on one of its legs, and I went down hard.
Before I could get back up, a massive crystal chandelier came crashing down.
Part of its heavy frame struck my back, and broken glass scattered across the floor.
I gritted my teeth and forced myself to get up. With everyone rushing past me, I had no time to think about the pain.
I just needed to get somewhere safe.
By the time I reached the hotel's storm shelter, Ethan and Brooke were nowhere in sight.
I'd been left behind again.
I pulled out my phone and texted my aunt Dana.
[I'll do it. I'll sign up for the trial.]

I was always the last one picked.

I was right behind them when he shoved a banquet table out of his way.
The table scraped across the floor and slid directly into my path.
My foot caught on one of its legs, and I went down hard.

Dana led a research team at Cadence, a neurotech company testing an experimental implant that might help people like me process information faster.
I'd struggled for years to keep up with everyone else, no matter how hard I tried, and Dana believed the implant might help.
She'd been asking me to join the first human trial, but the risks were serious.
If I agreed, I'd have to spend three years in a secure research facility in New Mexico, cut off from the outside world.
Until that night, I'd been too afraid to commit.
My phone lit up almost immediately.
Dana sent a string of messages warning me that the implant could cause serious complications, leave me with permanent speech problems, or even put my life at risk.
She urged me to think carefully and not make such a big decision while I was upset.
I read her messages, then replied.
[I've made up my mind. I'm willing to sign the consent forms.]
I slipped my phone into my pocket just as Ethan and Brooke hurried through the crowd toward me.
Ethan grabbed my hand, looking worried.
"June, are you okay? That warning came out of nowhere."
He glanced at Brooke, who was leaning against him.
"She twisted her ankle on the stairs. I had to carry her down. I didn't have time to come back for you."
Brooke looked stricken.
"I'm so sorry, June. I feel terrible. Ethan had to get me out because I couldn't walk."
I started to tell them I was fine, but a sharp pain shot through my back.
I sucked in a breath and froze.
Brooke's eyes widened. "Oh my God, June! Your back—you're bleeding!"
Ethan hurried around behind me. When he saw the blood soaking through my shirt, his brows drew together.
"Seriously, June? How do you manage to get hurt just trying to get out of a building?"
I stared at him.
How was I supposed to explain that his rush to get Brooke out had left me trapped behind him?
He'd shoved the table aside without looking. It had slid into my path and tripped me. Then the chandelier had come down before I could get back up.
And through it all, he hadn't even looked back.
Ethan sighed and turned to Brooke, gently tapping her nose.
"Good thing you noticed. I was so worried about getting us out that I didn't even see June was hurt."
Brooke gave him an embarrassed smile.
"You've always been a little scatterbrained."
Then Ethan turned back to me, shaking his head.
"June, how do you always manage to be a step behind everyone else?"
Brooke sighed, too.
"What are you going to do without us someday?"
They'd asked me that question plenty of times before.
Back then, I'd always grinned and shot back, "What, are you two planning to abandon me?"
They'd laugh and promise to protect me for the rest of our lives.
But now, standing beside them with their shoulders touching, I couldn't bring myself to say it.
For years, I'd believed I was an equal part of a friendship that would never break.
Maybe I'd been the only one who saw it that way.
I held back my usual teasing reply and forced a small, self-deprecating smile.
"Once you two are gone, I'll figure out how to manage on my own."

She never knew that the woman he trusted most had stolen her identity.
Or that the man she loved had secretly loved her all along.

Vivian had divorced him.
She had disappeared with his unborn child.
And she had no intention of coming back.

Standing beside her was a little girl with eyes identical to Caden Lux's.

Love's Deadly Equation
I was sent to her.
To watch her. To protect her. And, when the order comes… to kill her.
My name is Keegan Caffery. I’m the Carter Mafia’s best hitman. I don’t miss. I don’t fail.
At least, I didn’t use to.
I don’t know what it is about her that got to me first—her mouth, her mind, or the way she looks at me like I’m not what she should fear.
I’ve had a gun to her head since I walked into her life.
She knows it.
And she still doesn’t run.
She just watches me back like she’s studying a problem she refuses to call impossible.
She’s the one variable I can’t control.
And God help me… I don’t want to.
I have an order. I have loyalty. I have a trigger.
But every time I imagine it—
I can’t stand it.
Her or me. That’s the math.
It’s a deadly equation I don’t want to solve.
⬥ Maisie ⬥
I’m not ordinary. I stopped pretending long ago.
My name is Maisie Seo. IQ 145. Clinical genius.
Which sounds impressive until you realize what it actually means: I don’t fit anywhere people expect me to.
I see patterns everywhere. Outcomes before they happen. People like equations I’ve already solved.
It gets lonely in a world you’ve already figured out.
So I dull myself down. Smoke the edges off. Pretend, badly, to be the kind of normal that lets people stay.
Then he walked in.
I knew what he was immediately. Dangerous. Intentional. Wrong in all the right ways.
I should be afraid of him.
I keep waiting for that to kick in.
Instead, I’m fascinated.
Because for the first time in my life… I’ve found something I can’t solve.
He is my deadly equation.
My Billionaire Husband's Secret
He was the CEO of the Blackwood Group — a man whose wealth and power eclipsed ninety-nine percent of the world.
He was gentle. Romantic. Attentive. I fell for him fast.
But a year into our marriage, I began to notice something — a pattern.
Lucas's sexual appetite was intense — he wanted me almost every night. Yet every single month, he arranged a solo trip to send me away. I told myself it was his way of spoiling me.
Then a message arrived from someone called Sweet An.
Do you really know your husband?
From that day on, my life filled with shadows.
I suspected my husband of having an affair.
When Lucas and I made love, something felt wrong — his body too large, too much, like something I couldn't explain.
I heard sounds during sex — animal sounds, like something feral had crawled into bed with us.
My best friend Mia said: "There are men sick enough to let dogs fuck their wives."
The family doctor, Daisy, told me: "You could never stay by Lucas's side forever. Your background doesn't make you worthy of being his wife. Do you understand?"
I went looking for whoever had been tearing my marriage apart. I fought to win my husband back.
But the deeper I searched, the larger the secret grew — something far darker hiding beneath this supposed betrayal.
Does Lucas truly love me?
And why, out of everyone in the world, did he choose to marry me?
Filled, Owned, and Fucked by My Best Friend’s Father
He was supposed to be off-limits. Untouchable. The kind of man you only fantasize about when you’re alone in the dark with your hand between your thighs.
But the night I caught him eating another woman alive by the pool, I couldn’t look away.
And he knew it.
The moment his dark eyes locked on mine through the glass, I became prey. His filthy smirk promised one thing—he saw me touching myself to him, and he wasn’t about to let me forget it.
Now, every time I’m in his house, I can’t breathe without thinking of his mouth between my legs.
I left my cheating boyfriend behind, only to fall into something even more dangerous:
a man who could ruin me, break me, and make me beg for his cock while his own daughter sleeps in the next room.
He’s too old. Too powerful. Too forbidden.
But Gianni doesn’t ask—he takes.
And I don’t want him to stop.

BROKEN TRUST
Neither of them knew she was carrying his child.

Three years later, fate drags them back into each other’s world, along with a little girl who has Ryan’s eyes and a truth that shatters everything he thought he knew.
Old wounds reopen, grief masquerades as rage, and love refuses to stay buried.
