Chapter 2
Being a personal secretary is something I've wanted to do since I was a kid pretending to run my dad's day to day 'business'.
So I worked really, really hard to make it happen, since I couldn't see myself doing anything else. You're probably wondering how I'm able to afford such a nice house in a nice neighborhood. So I'll tell you, once I graduated from school my pay rose to 6 figures, when I tell you, that when my first pay hit after the raise I was on cloud nine. Eating steak and lobster, shopping at brand name stores. You name it, I was doing it. That is, until I realized that I needed to do better and buckle down and save money. This job was not a guarantee, so I needed to prepare for if things ever went south.
After saving for a couple years, I was able to purchase my house. I love my house, I love my neighborhood with its nice parks, and nice grocery store workers. I love how it is a short train ride away from my job, and the clubs cause there has to be fun in there somewhere. I can't wait to have my housewarming. I want to show off my house, I haven't had any company since I moved in 2 weeks ago because I wanted to decorate, and put my own personal touch on the house before letting others see it.
I invited my friends Melissa, Jack, and Lily, as well as my siblings. I also invited a few people from my job(which I am on my way to as I tell you all about me) I met Melissa and Jack in freshman year of college, we had to do a group project together and were inseparable ever since. I met Lily in my 3rd year of college, we dated for like 2 months before we decided we were better friends than lovers(not that we ever made it to the lovin' part cause again, better friends). But these 3 people were my closest friends, I would even go so far as to say my only friends.
I feel like I haven't seen them in ages, even though it's only been a couple of weeks. I've been so busy dealing with my house on top of work. I haven't had any time to go out. Just two more weeks and I'll be seeing them so we can get drunk at my housewarming. They'll be staying over after everyone else leaves. I just know we'll have a good time, as we always do whenever the four of us get together.
I really miss my siblings too, I haven't seen them in like 4 days because they're busy with work. Can't wait till my housewarming, even though I hope I'll see them before then. I definitely am looking to set something up with my friends because I don't think I can go another two weeks without seeing them, and gossiping about something.
My friends are quirky, I feel like that's why we get along so well. Our personalities just mesh. Jack gives the boy next door vibe, he has brown hair and brown eyes. He's 5'11, which is on the taller side for a beta. He works as a business consultant, helping business owners know which business merger or acquisition would be most beneficial. He does alright for himself. Melissa is the free spirit of our group. She has red hair and hazel eyes, she 5'4, but if you ask her she's definitely a giant. She's a beta, and works as a pediatric oncology nurse. Lily is the responsible one, she has black hair and blue eyes, she's 5'3 and a beta as well. She manages an art gallery in lower Manhattan.
I make my way outside, enjoying the morning sun on my face. It's a beautiful day, full of sunshine and birds chirping. I walk past the park at the end of my block, and look over to see parents playing with their toddlers on the play set and swings. I smile to myself, I love children. I help out with the orphanage outside the city as often as I can. I also try to donate at least $20,000 a year. I really enjoy helping at the orphanage, because I'm able to play with the little kids to my hearts content. I also get to talk to the older kids who haven't been adopted yet. I try to give them advice and words of encouragement. I love receiving letters and phone calls from the older kids who get adopted. They thank me so much for being supportive of them during their time at the orphanage. It just warms my heart so much.
I make it to the train station to make my way to Manhattan, it's only a 25 minute ride to my job and a 5 minute walk from the train station. Manhattan is always busy. Bustling with people on their way to work or play. People move briskly thru the streets, always with purpose. I watch the people in their business clothes, some on the phone, some walking with dazed looks on their faces. Some smiling cheerily. I watch the woman in a long flowing skirt run up to a gentleman outside of a café and give him a big hug right on the sidewalk. I smile to myself as I try to guess their stories. In my mind the guy in the three piece suit is on his way to a very important business meeting. The woman talking animatedly on the phone is a lawyer arguing with her client about what she thinks the next course of action should be. And that woman hugging the gentleman outside of the café? She's excited to see him after being away from him for 3 months because he had to travel for business.
I'm smiling brightly as I reach the building the office I work in is located in. I stand on the sidewalk and look up, it's not a very big building when you think of skyscrapers. But I suppose it's big enough. The office I work in is located on the 15th floor of this steel and glass building. I watch the sun reflecting off the glass higher up and squint my eyes. It's a big building, but not quite big enough for me. In this department, size does matter. I won't be fully happy until I'm working in a bigger building.
I take a deep breath and walk inside, ready to start my day. I'm gonna keep telling myself that it's gonna be a good day, even though this isn't the end of the road for me.
I still believe greater is coming.
When I walk into the building, I stop and take a look around. It's a beautiful open lobby layout. There is a nice sized waiting room to the left, a reception desk straight in front of you, and the elevators are situated behind the reception desk.
There's beautiful artwork placed throughout, as well as potted plants all around giving it a classy, but homey feel.
