Chapter 2: No place for the Wolfless
I followed Lily’s eyes and saw the last person I hoped to see. Edina. She was dressed in a tightly fitted short red gown, and her hair straight and blond shined in the lightening of the hall as she made her way to where we were standing.
She had about 5 others she wolves with her, looking so loyal and determined as they followed her like little ants flowing their leaders.
It was already dark outside and the thick skies matched with the low feeling of my heart. Edina had a smug expression on her face as she approached us, her hips swaying from side to side as she walked, and her exposed cleavages bouncing from the hard movement of her heels against the tilled flow.
Her eyes turned mocking as she looked at me. “Well, seems like our loser wolfless thing has finally found her click.” She said with a proud smirk on her face.
My jaw tightened and my face began to turn red, as the image of that night kept appearing in my mind.
“I was right, I put you in the right place. You shouldn’t get too comfortable I must tell you, because it wouldn’t be long before I throw you out completely, back to whatever hole you crawled out from.” She said with a smirk.
Her companions took that time to laugh, loud painful laughter that tugged at my heart alongside the words she had said. I tried my best to remain calm, but my sanity slipping away, bit by bit. I clenched my fists to restrain my anger.
She looked me up and down and said disdainfully. “Why are you here anyway, do you want to go after Seth’s Uncle now that Seth has dumped your sorry ass?” She asked with a chuckle, and the others laughed again.
My bones cracked as I reached out to punch her, but Lily grabbed my hand to stop me, her head shaking slightly as though she was begging me to keep calm.
I suck in my breath and took a step back, but that only got Edina more upset. She glared at me now, her eyes turning venomous as she said with a sneer.
“Mark my words Evelyn, after I become your Luna, I will make you lick my feet everyday and then I will throw you into the dungeon, where you will spend the rest of your life eating rotten corpse.” She said and then she turned and walked away, not before giving me some nasty glares with her followers.
My eyes stung with tears but I refused to let it drop too, what was the essence of crying anyway, my fate was now in their hands.
“That bitch,” Lily said after she left, “I hate her guts. You shouldn’t pick a fight with her. Couldn’t you see that’s what she wanted you to do, and if you had hit her, then everyone will blame you. It’s best to avoid her Eve, she will soon be Luna, just don’t let her get into your head.” She told me slightly patting my back.
“Yeah, that was very helpful Lily.” I said sarcastically as a tear finally slipped down my face. I quickly turned and rushed out of the hall, forgetting all about the rules. I just wanted to get far away from the toxic environment without being noticed. I shouldn’t let her see that her words broke me. None of them deserves to see my tears.
There had been no foreplan on where to go, so I just walked aimlessly until I found a secluded spot which seemed to be at the back of the Pack’s hall. I didn’t even bother to see if anyone was around, no one would come here at this time.
I slowly settled myself on one of the logs of wood placed to encircle the area, letting out a sigh. I raked my fingers through my hair that fell across my face. I leaned back with hands placed at both end of the log, basking in the peace and quiet around me, wishing its peace will wash its way through the chaos in my mind.
“Why are you here alone and not celebrating with the others? I'm guessing you aren’t their favorite too.” A deep voice suddenly called out somewhere beside me.
Startled, I jumped to my feet, only to be met with the most beautiful set of gray eyes I'd ever seen. They drew me in seductive and intense. I cringed from the heat of his stare when his gaze swept through my face.
He was much older. The stubble on his chin, the tell tale signs of maturity. I couldn't place a certain age on him, because he still exuded vibrant youthfulness. But he had to be in his 30s. His face was one I'd never seen or come across in the pack.
I wondered who he was, concluding he was someone from another pack who came to celebrate Alpha Damon's arrival. Remembering I'd been staring at him for too long, I hurriedly lowered my gaze.
“I'm sorry. I didn't mean to……………..” I trailed off, not knowing what to apologize for.
He titled his head slightly and raised a brow making him look but seductive and enchanting. “Why are you apologizing?” He cut in.
“I don't know.” I responded almost in a whisper. It was true that I didn’t know. I was just seating, and it still seems the Alpha hasn’t arrived yet, so I shouldn’t exactly be in trouble. But why then does looking into his face seem like a crime I would pay so dearly for?
I felt a shiver run through me when he suddenly approached. I swallowed hard and slowly took a step back, which was a futile attempt because there was no way to escape to behind me.
His eyes seemed to darken as he said, “All the unmated she wolves are in the hall ready to receive the moon Goddess's blessing for a mate once the ceremony starts. Why are you here and not there?”
I sighed, so the ceremony has already started. I was told that they performed the ritual before the ceremony, and it seems to be now. Faltering, I wrapped my arms around myself, rubbing my shoulders when I suddenly felt cold, and I felt the need to tell this stranger the truth.
“I don't have a wolf.” I replied in a tired voice, and looked away then afraid to see the judgment I had seen in many people’s eyes as soon as they learnt I had no wolf.
His eyes widened in surprise for a moment, then his lips raised in a smile, revealing a set of pearly white dentition.
“That’s interesting.” He said with an amused expression which caught me off guard. “But having no wolf shouldn’t stop you from attending the function. Who knows, you might get lucky and find your wolf tonight, it’s going to be a full moon.” He explained.
I scoffed lightly. “Let those who believe in her celebrate, because I have no need to. There is no way I would believe in her after what she made me pass through. She watched my entire Pack get wiped off and not once did she step in to save my family that had relentlessly served her for years.” I said spitefully, my eyes stinging with tears. ‘And she gave me a mate that would betray me.’ I said the later part in my mind, my heart racing from pain.
As though I just got back to my senses, I looked up at the stranger with anticipation, wondering if I would really get into trouble now for speaking against the moon goddess.
But as though he could read my thoughts, he sighed and looked up to the sky with a grim expression. “No need to be afraid, I share your opinion. I run my own life.” He said simply, but his words deep.
His gaze swept over my face and he said. “Its going to be a long night, staying here will do you no good.” His voice held no pressure or threat. He then turned and walked into the darkness, leaving me all alone.
His words kept echoing in my head even after he disappeared, and I couldn’t help but realize that he was right. I could really get into big trouble for being out of the party for this long.
I feared the Alpha’s anger and punishment more than the moon goddess, and I know that there was no longer any Seth in my life to help me when I default.
Hesitating for a while, I stood transfixed for a moment, deciding that staying in the hall was much better than outside. It was already getting too cold here, and there was nothing to warm me up. I could just find a secluded spot in the hall and stay there until it was over. What more could possibly go wrong?
Walking back to the pack hall where all the merriment took place, I shuddered when the cold night wind slapped my skin again, almost like it had joined the others in mocking me too, since I had no wolf and was like every ordinary human.
He had been right, I thought as I gazed up into the night sky. It was indeed a full moon tonight. The full moon shone brightly above ready to peak. Its metallic silver soon brightened the pathway that led back to the hall, and I could see the lake reflecting his brightness.
I stepped into the hall which was already ringing with music and voices. Everyone in here seemed very excited, especially the unmated females who kept moving around and laughing with every male they clicked with.
I looked around for Lily, but I couldn’t find her. Sighing deeply I slowly began to whissle my way through the crowd and down to the extreme end of the hall.
I had barely made it to the end of the hall when the ever meticulous Edina spotted me again. She smirked, stalking towards me with malicious intent evident in her eyes.
I didn’t need any seer to tell me that something terrible was going to happen, so i backed away, looking for Lily or anyone who could be paying attention. But everyone was busy doing their thing, and Lily was nowhere to be found.
“Evelyn, how stupid of you to show me your face again. I really wanted to let you off the first time, but you keep getting on my nerves. Is it just me or are you too stupid for your own good?” She asked with a smear.
I pushed myself up, I couldn’t let her see that I was scared and bothered, that would only make her do more. My tone was not exactly courteous as I said to her.
“You know you can really make yourself more beneficial in this Pack than just looking for trouble and stealing other people’s mate.”
My words got to her and i saw her eyes change to her wolf’s in an instant. I slowly took a step back, I had no wolf and so I could never go against her in that form. Her little followers were already exchanging glances but then they maintained their composure.
“No matter how you try, you will have no significance, not here or with any man. Do you know why? Its because you are a wolfless nobody, that caused the death of her own family.” She said.
This time around, I lost my temper. I hated it when they made stupid claims about my Pack, and I could guess that it was for that reason that she used it against me.
I launched at her, wishing that my wolf will come out at this point so I can gladly tear her apart, but before I could move, I was instantly surrounded.
“Did you see that, she attacked me first.” Edina suddenly shouted; her tone pitiful. “I'm the soon to be Luna, and tradition demands I am given maximum respect, and yet she hits me. Grab her.” She said, her eyes turning fully into the gold iris of her wolf.
My eyes widened and I tried to take step back, but instantly her minions appeared out of nowhere and held my arms tightly, pulling forcefully.
I winced from the pain which seemed to be reaping my bones apart. “Let go of me.” I cried, but in the crowded hall, it all fell on deaf ears.
Edina leaned in, her eyes flashing mockingly as she whispered only for me to hear. “Since you so eagerly wished to cross me, let me help you put an end to your useless life.” Her eyes glazed, and I could tell she was mind linking the rest of her friends.
I heard joyful giggles erupt from amongst them, and I knew then that whatever they were planning wasn’t going to end well.
My heart skipped a beat, and I began struggling and shouting. “Let me go.” I screamed again, trying to squirm out of their tight grasp, but they dragged me abruptly forward through the rest of the females who just made way for them to pass through.
My eyes widened as the realization of what she'd planned to do dawned on me, no, no, I shrieked, they shouldn’t do this. This would be murder.
When they pushed my body forward the large window of the 2-story high building, I bucked and kicked with newfound strength, but it was of no use, they were too strong.
“If you are lucky enough and land well, you might just break a few bones here and then, but if you land with your head,” she shook her head slightly, “then I might just say good bye to you now.” She said and then nodded to her followers.
All my pleading fell on deaf ears as they continued to relentlessly dragged me and hauled me over the window, but I was quick enough to grab the edge of the window, struggling desperately to get a balance when my feet were dangling over air.
I looked desperately at the others as sweat began forming on my forehead. Some wanted to protest, but chose to remain quiet for fear of getting on Edina's bad list. The rest remained indifferent to the situation.
“Please, don’t do this.” I cried out to her, my hands already feeling numb from holding until the still window frame.
Edina grinned at that. “Too bad,” she said, “I don’t want your apology, I just want you to disappear.” She said with a grin.
Suddenly, I felt hands slowly pilling away my hand from the railing, finger by finger. I struggled hard to holding on, crying and screaming. I realized it was useless, I was going to die here, like this.
