Chapter 10 Reaction
Normally, if it was just disinfection and medication, a wound like that would take at least four or five days to heal and scab over.
But Wentworth's wound had already scabbed.
"Did you... get treated at Concordia Saint Medical Center?" Matilda asked.
Wentworth answered honestly, "Yes, you know that hospital?"
"I've heard other doctors talk about it. They say that hospital has the most advanced equipment and medicine, especially in surgery. Most injuries can be healed after just one treatment there. I didn't believe it before, but now I do."
Out of curiosity, Matilda leaned in closer to look, her nose almost touching Wentworth's private parts.
After observing for a moment, Matilda suddenly noticed his genitals.
Startled, she quickly grabbed the blanket from the sofa and covered him with it.
Now her palms were sweating.
"Um, I... didn't mean to."
Wentworth remained calm. While pulling on his pants, he said, "It's fine, you're a doctor."
"Well... I'm going to work now!"
"Okay." Wentworth nodded.
Matilda fled out the door.
...
At the hospital.
As usual, the department held a morning meeting every day.
For some reason, Wesley was late today.
Matilda started chatting with Wanda, another female doctor in the department who she was close with.
"Wanda, do you know about Concordia Saint Medical Center? I heard it's pretty hard to get an appointment there."
Wanda seemed a bit surprised. "Why are you suddenly curious about Concordia Saint Medical Center?"
"A relative went there for treatment yesterday."
As soon as Matilda finished speaking, Irene across from her snorted mockingly, "Is it really a relative? Concordia Saint Medical Center doesn't treat just any patient. You not only need money, but also some connections."
Matilda asked, "What kind of connections?"
"Basically money and connections. As for what kind of connections, I don't know. Even treating a regular external injury there costs tens of thousands of dollars. Does your relative have that kind of means?"
Matilda couldn't help but laugh coldly, "Just because I'm poor doesn't mean my relatives are poor too. Who doesn't have some wealthy relatives?"
"If your relative is so rich, why don't they help you out? When you first started at the hospital, I heard you were still paying off student loans from your salary."
Seeing Irene being harsh, Wanda couldn't help but say, "Dr. Barnes, say less. Why should Dr. Spencer rely on relatives when she can support herself? Favors like that aren't easy to repay."
Matilda smiled at Wanda, "Wanda is so understanding."
Irene rolled her eyes at Matilda and was about to say something, but Wesley arrived.
"Sorry, there was some traffic. Let's start the meeting now!"
...
In the evening, Matilda stood at the exit of the outpatient building, looking at the pouring rain outside.
When did it start raining? She'd been so busy and dizzy that she hadn't noticed at all.
Seeing her standing still, the security guard asked, "Dr. Spencer, do you need an umbrella?"
Matilda smiled, "No, thanks."
She had a raincoat on her scooter, but with rain this heavy, she didn't dare risk riding back.
She planned to rest on a bench inside for a while and wait for the rain to lighten up before going back.
Just then, Adalyn and Reuben came out too.
Matilda wasn't planning to acknowledge them, but Adalyn stopped in front of Matilda with an arrogant look, "Dr. Spencer, with such heavy rain, isn't your boyfriend coming to pick you up?"
Matilda laughed coldly, "Are you here to show off that you have a man? No need. He's just a man."
Adalyn said, "Sorry, not only do I have a man, but also a car. Ben, go get your car. I'll wait here."
Reuben also looked quite pleased with himself. He now had a house and a car. Although he had to pay the mortgage every month, he could still provide shelter for his beloved woman.
He didn't regret cheating on Matilda with Adalyn at all. Look, Adalyn even contributed $20,000 to buy the car with him. If it were Matilda, that would be impossible. Matilda had been paying off student loans since graduation and was usually stingy. When going out to eat, she didn't dare go to expensive restaurants.
Finding a woman with some money could save you years of struggle. That saying was right.
Reuben went to get the car while Adalyn waited in the outpatient building.
Some doctors she knew greeted her as they passed by, "Dr. Stewart, not going home yet?"
"Waiting for my Ben. He went to get the car." Adalyn smiled.
"Your Ben is so nice, a great boyfriend."
"I think so too."
Soon, Reuben's BMW X5 pulled up at the entrance. Adalyn smiled at Matilda, "Dr. Spencer, we'll be going now."
Matilda said coolly, "No one's stopping you."
"This rain won't stop anytime soon. You'll have to wait a while."
"No need for your concern. Drive safe."
Adalyn got in the car and said to Reuben, "Ben, let's go."
"You haven't fastened your seatbelt yet. Let me help you." Reuben leaned over, fastened Adalyn's seatbelt, and kissed her on the cheek.
"Stop it, we're still at the hospital."
The BMW drove out. When they reached the hospital gate, Adalyn suddenly pointed at someone nearby, "Ben, look, isn't that Matilda's boyfriend?"
Reuben slowed down and looked too.
In the heavy rain, a tall, well-built man holding a large umbrella was walking toward the outpatient building, his posture upright and dignified.
It was as if the wind and rain meant nothing to him, merely decoration.
Adalyn was immediately drawn to Wentworth's bearing.
He was so tall and had such great presence.
Seeing Adalyn watching Wentworth, Reuben stepped on the gas and said, "This guy comes to pick up his girlfriend and doesn't even drive a car. What a cheapskate!"
Adalyn thought about it and agreed, "Exactly. If you're broke, why play the hero? They'll probably both ride that scooter together and get soaked like drowned rats!"
