Chapter 11 You are being promoted
“I can never be dismissed. I wasn’t at fault,” Kane said, staring directly across the table at Reginald. “If anyone should be dismissed, it should be Bruno. He was the one who started the fight, not me.”
Reginald’s face turned bright red with anger as he slammed his hand onto the table. “How dare you try to make the rules here, Ryder?” he roared. “This is my company, and I’ll decide who stays and who goes!”
Kane remained completely unfazed by the outburst. Reginald continued furiously, “The company has its own rules and regulations, and just because your brother is the son-in-law of the company owner doesn’t mean you can’t be held accountable. Don’t think for a second that your family connection will save you,” he spat.
Reginald leaned forward aggressively. “You think you can walk in here, make demands, and get away with it? I’ll process your dismissal letter right now if you keep pushing me.”
Just before Kane could respond, the door suddenly opened and Reginald’s secretary rushed in, breathing heavily. “Sir,” she said urgently, “we have a visitor. Mr. Alexander Monroe, Director of Monroe Group Enterprises.”
Reginald froze instantly. His posture became stiff as he straightened his tie and wiped his sweaty palms on his trousers in a desperate attempt to regain composure. Without another word, he hurried out of the room.
Kane sat back in his chair, watching the supervisor rush off like a frightened mouse. It did not take long before someone else walked into the room.
The man who entered was tall, confident, and impeccably dressed in an expensive suit. His presence immediately filled the entire office with an aura of power and authority.
“Kane Draven,” he said with a warm smile as his eyes landed on Kane. “It’s been a while.”
Before Kane could say anything, Alexander Monroe walked toward him with a confident stride and extended his hand in greeting. Kane stood up, curiosity growing stronger with every second. Who exactly was this man, and why did he feel so familiar?
Reginald, who had just returned to the room with the visitor, looked absolutely thrilled. He quickly turned to Alexander with a forced, glowing smile. “Mr. Monroe! What an unexpected surprise!” Reginald exclaimed. “I’ve written so many letters to you over the past few months, and here you are! To what do we owe the pleasure of your visit? Are you here to discuss the project we’ve been trying to collaborate on?”
Alexander Monroe did not respond to Reginald’s eager words. Instead, his gaze shifted directly toward Kane. “I’m not here for business transactions,” he said calmly. “Actually, I’m here because I’ve been looking for someone.”
He pointed straight at Kane. “He’s the one I’m looking for.”
Kane felt confused. He could not remember where he had met this man before. “Who are you?” he asked.
“Alexander Monroe,” the man replied as he extended a firm handshake. “I am Titan’s pal.”
The moment he mentioned Titan, Kane glanced over at Reginald, who was watching them closely. Kane turned back to Alexander. “Can we talk somewhere else?” he asked. He did not want Reginald overhearing their conversation.
Alexander nodded. “Of course.” He turned and began walking toward the exit.
Just as Kane was about to follow him, Reginald suddenly grabbed his arm. “How do you know Alexander?” he asked urgently. “Please make sure you speak well of me to him. It’s been ages since I’ve tried to make amends with him, but he always shuts me out.”
Kane pulled his arm free without saying a word and walked past Reginald, following Alexander out of the building.
They stepped outside. Alexander led him to a sleek black car parked just outside the entrance. As they stopped beside it, Kane turned to him immediately. “Has Titan tracked down Marcus Kade?” he asked.
Without saying a word, Alexander pulled out his phone, unlocked it, and opened a video before handing it over. Kane watched carefully. The video showed a fragile man sitting in a wheelchair inside a hospital room. His eyes were fixed on the ocean outside the window, lost in thought. As the camera zoomed in, Kane noticed the unmistakable scar on the man’s neck. He recognized it immediately. He had trained Marcus Kade himself when he was still part of the unit.
The video ended. Before Kane could speak, Alexander’s phone rang. He glanced at the screen and handed it to Kane. The caller ID displayed “Titan.”
Kane answered without hesitation. “Ryder,” Titan’s voice came through clearly. “Have you confirmed it?”
Kane nodded even though Titan could not see him. “Yeah, it’s him. It’s Marcus.”
“Good,” Titan replied. “I’ll be in touch. Stay safe.”
Kane thanked him and ended the call. He handed the phone back to Alexander. Alexander quickly wrote something down on a piece of paper and passed it to him.
“Here,” Alexander said. “That is Marcus Kade’s location address.”
Kane nodded and tucked the paper into his pocket. “Thanks,” he said.
Without another word, Alexander Monroe turned and hurried back to his sleek black car. He drove away quickly, leaving Kane standing alone in front of the building.
Just as Kane adjusted the paper in his pocket, he heard the sound of another car pulling up. He looked up and saw Vinnie stepping out of his vehicle.
Vinnie caught sight of him slipping something into his pocket. “Who was that?” he asked, watching Alexander’s car disappear down the road.
“Just an old friend,” Kane replied calmly.
Vinnie did not press the matter further. “I heard what happened back there with Bruno and Reginald,” he said. “I know Reginald was being difficult, but I wanted to tell you… don’t lose your temper when people speak ill of me.”
Kane let out a small sigh. Vinnie continued, “People can say whatever they want. I’m used to it by now.”
Kane tried to brush off his brother’s words. As a former captain in the Valkyrie Unit, he had been trained to protect those he cared about, especially his family. He could not stand it when anyone insulted them. No matter who it was or what they said, no one had the right to talk down to his family.
“So, what brings you here, Vinnie?” Kane asked, shifting the conversation. “You said you wouldn’t be visiting me anytime soon. What changed your plan?”
Vinnie smiled. “Actually, my wife wanted to talk to you about something.”
Kane raised an eyebrow in surprise. “Your wife? What is it about?”
“She wants to promote you to company manager,” Vinnie said.
Kane was even more surprised. “Wait, what?” he asked. “That can’t be possible. Why would she want to promote me?”
