Chapter 138
Carol’s POV
Evidence had been found at Oliver’s uncle's house. I had never seen Oliver as furious as he was while he stood in front of his uncle who was strapped to an interrogation chair. There wasn’t really much to interrogate, so it wasn’t a cruel scene for me to watch. But I did have to watch Oliver punch the man he thought of as family and blood splatter from his nose and lips.
They already had all the evidence they needed, and Aiden was in the process of speaking to the King about what he found out from his Beta. They had Mike’s full confession and the reasoning behind what he had done, including time stamps and the amount of money that’s been wired to him all these years for doing the Beta’s bidding.
“We did this for you!” Mike hissed, spitting blood onto the ground as he glared up at Oliver, his eyes blazing. “Your father only wanted the best life for you!”
“If he truly cared about me, he would have never sent me away,” Oliver hissed, fury evident in his voice and on his face.
“Do you really think you’d have the life you had if you stayed at the King’s empire? You were an unwanted bastard! A mistake that should have never been born!! Your mother was a disgrace and a criminal. The king would have never allowed her infant to remain under his roof. Your father did what he thought was best. He entrusted you to his brother and when his brother died, I was the only one who could care for you. He was my best friend, and I would do anything for that family. I did nothing wrong other than appease a good friend.”
Oliver shook his head, disgust written all over his face.
“That man is not my father,” he said through his teeth. “He’s a stranger to me. My father is dead and soon, so will you.”
He turned away at that moment and paused when he saw my wary gaze watching him. I think he thought I went off with Aiden to speak with my biological father. After they found traces of the poison in Mike’s apartment and then did some medical tests on his current illness to find that it was due to exposure, the Investigative Force dug a bit deeper and ended up finding all the time stamps and money wiring. It showed where the money was coming from as well, which traced back to the King’s Beta. There was no way he wouldn’t believe Aiden now.
“Were you listening the whole time?” Oliver asked as he walked with me out of the Capitol’s police station.
I nodded my head once and stopped walking once we were outside.
“How are you holding up?” I asked him, genuinely worried for him.
He shrugged one shoulder.
“I just found out my entire life is a lie,” he muttered. “How would you hold up?”
I frowned at him.
“Your whole life was not a lie, Oliver. You made incredible friends here and despite what you might think, you have a family who genuinely cares about you and wants what’s best. You are an incredible man and an even better Beta. You didn’t even blink an eye when Mike explained about this setup. You knew it was wrong and you wanted no part in it. You could have helped him and got the Alpha position. You could have reached out to your bio father this entire time and figured out a new plan to get rid of Aiden and make sure that his father never recovers, but you didn’t. That says a lot about you and I’m proud to have gotten to know you and become your friend.”
I put my hand on his shoulder, hoping my words were reassuring. He gave me a faint smile that didn’t reach his eyes. I knew he was tired and more confused than ever. I hated that and I wished I could fix it. But I knew only time could fix this wound that’s been inflicted on his heart.
“I appreciate that,” he finally said, taking a deep breath. “It means a lot coming from the future Luna.”
He nudged my shoulder playfully and I couldn’t help the smile that tugged at my lips.
“Well, I need to be supportive towards my Beta and the pack, right?” I asked.
He laughed and then nodded.
Before he could say anything more, Aiden appeared. He looked just as tired as we all felt. He ran his fingers through his hair and took a deep breath. He paused when he saw us standing outside of the jail and he smiled at me as he wrapped his arms around me, pulling me close to him.
“Did you finish speaking with him?” Aiden asked, looking at Oliver as he continued to hold me.
“Yeah,” Oliver said, shaking his head and staring at the ground. “I didn’t really get the closure I thought I’d get. But it’s done now. I guess now we just move on from the events.”
“You don’t need to pretend to be okay, Ollie,” Aiden said, narrowing his eyes at his best friend. “I get that this whole thing fucked you up. You can take as much time as you need before you bounce back. We all understand.”
Oliver nodded and gave him a faint smile.
“I appreciate that,” he murmured. “Did you speak with the King?”
Aiden nodded.
“Yeah, he was reluctant to believe me at first and then I sent him all the evidence,” Aiden explained.
I pulled away from the warmth of his embrace so I could look up at him. His face was pale, and he looked grim as he thought back to the conversation.
“He was quiet for so long while he looked through all the evidence I presented and for a minute, I didn’t think he’d believe me still,” he admitted, running his fingers through his hair once again. “And then he swore and smashed something across his office.”
I blinked at him.
“What?” I asked, confused.
“He was furious,” he said. “I had never heard anyone as mad as that before.”
“At you?” Oliver asked, equally confused.
“No, at his Beta,” Aiden answered, I released the breath I had been holding in. “He feels blindsided, embarrassed, appalled, furious…” Aiden listed. “Not to mention betrayed and heartbroken. But most importantly he feels ashamed. He’s also worried about you, and I told him that you will give him a call soon.”
I nodded and bit my lower lip. It was strange calling the King, but I would do whatever Aiden suggested. I snuggled into his side again and rested my head against his chest as he wrapped his arms around me and held me in a tight embrace.
“He wants to kill his Beta and I have a feeling that’ll happen soon,” Aiden continued as he looked at Oliver. “I convinced him to let you see him first.”
“Why would I want to see his Beta?” Oliver muttered; he refused to meet Aiden’s eyes.
“Because he’s your father,” Aiden answered.
“He’s a stranger. My father is dead!” Oliver snapped.
“Still, because of him my best friend is standing in front of me and is the best Beta I know. If you don’t want to see him that’s fine. But at least think about it. I’m not sure how long you’ll have before the King kills him, but I at least bought you a little bit.”
Oliver was quiet for a moment, and then he nodded thoughtfully.
“Okay. Thanks, man,” he said, patting Aiden on the shoulder before walking away.
“So, what’s going to happen with him now?” I asked, pointing at the pack jailhouse behind us.
Aiden followed my gaze to the jailhouse and sighed.
“Well, after they ask him a few more questions and book him. They will transfer him to the prison and then he will be sentenced to death.”
I nodded, feeling a tightness in my chest.
“Do you think Oliver will be okay?” I asked him, peeking up at him to see his concerned face.
He met my eyes and offered me a small and slow smile.
“I think he’ll be fine,” he said, bending to brush his lips across mine. “I love you.”
I smiled into his kiss and deepened it. I loved him too and I was going to show him with more than just words.
“Can you take me home now?” I asked him sleepily.
He grinned and scooped me into his arms, holding me bridal style. I whooped with laughter as I threw my head back, trusting him fully with my body.
“I thought you’d never ask,” he teased as he ran with me back home.
He didn’t release me as he ran into the penthouse, slamming the door shut behind us. He didn’t release me as he walked me into our shared bedroom and his lips found mine, hungrily and possessively. He surprisingly didn’t let go of me as he stripped me of both my shirt and pants. He trailed his lips down the nape of my neck, sending warmth throughout my body. Moisture pooled between my legs as he deepened the kiss, igniting the fire burning deep in my soul.
I ran my fingers through his thick hair and moaned out his name as my mate took me to new heights.
