The beta’s smile

Elara’s point of view.

It’s been two days since I last saw daylight. He claims that I’m his mate and he treats me this way? What a pathetic psychopath.

I jammed my teeth and clenched my fists in anger as I sweared. “Killian Blackwood, you’re not the first man to try to force me to be yours. Even if I can’t use brute force against you, I’ll set myself free by making you reject me.”

I had to go back to sleep despite hating the idea of resting in such a situation. But I needed to gather my strength because I won’t stop trying to escape until I succeed.

While saying this to myself, I heard the big steel door at the main entrance open slowly. The rusty steel scraped through the tiles as the brightest of sunlight poured on my face.

I squinted my eyes while placing my right hand over my face to block the sun. My gaze was sharp at the shadowy figure that just walked into the room holding something that looked like a tray in his hand.

I had just woken up so my vision was blurry and my head, hazy. I tried to make up who it was but my brain was slow at the moment. But what I noticed was that this figure was human-like.

“A human?” I thought to myself as I shifted from that position where the reflection of the sun rested.

“Who is there?” I said boldly.

“Forgive me your highness, I just came to deliver breakfast and maybe try to get to know you,” he said as he laid down the tray on a desk and advanced towards me.

I could see him clearly now. A tall huge man wearing the uniform suited for a butler. Deep blue eyes like those of the ocean after a sunset. He walked up to me with a smile on his face.

“You must be one of those beasts in your human form, am I right?” I asked as I slowly walked back but fixed my eyes solely on him. “And who is this majesty you speak of? Because I’m not her.”

“One of those beasts?” He asked with a smirk on his face. “Please don’t address me like you’re seeing me for the first time, my lady. You’re hurting my feelings. Have you suddenly forgotten about our meeting yesterday?”

“Meeting?” I whispered as if trying to remind myself and it clicked to me.

“Could this be the wolf that made a deal with me that he’d set me free if I make the alpha reject me?” I thought to myself.

“You didn’t make our deal—

“Buzz!” He exclaimed, cutting me off. “If this is how much time it took you to recall me then you clearly don’t remember me well.”

“Are you retarded?” I asked furiously. “If you’re here to ask stupid questions then I urge you to stop wasting your time and mine. Where is your alpha?”

“And that’s why I addressed you as your highness when I greeted you earlier,” he said, reminiscing the same smug he had on his face when we walked in. “You and the Alpha are so much alike. So possessive. You both never speak with timid tones. Always speaking with authority.”

“I had warned you to not waste my time, did I not?” I asked.

“Even though you’re locked up you’re still giving me commands. You were literally born to me royalty,” he cleared his throat as he continued. “I will do as you say your highness. I shouldn’t keep wasting your time. I’m Lucas Graves by name. I’m a proud Beta to the Alpha and that big beast, as you might claim. Yes, the one that put a stop to your escape the other day.”

Pfft!

I spat on the ground with a look of disgust written all over my face. “I knew I recognized those blue eyes somewhere.”

“I didn’t get your name the other day, your highness. Would you mind sharing?” He asked.

“Yes I would. I mind sharing, wouldn’t anyone? Because how do you claim that I’m your mate and not know me? Do you wolves just pick random people and declare they’re yours without even knowing anything about them? Don’t ask me for my name. You should be asking your alpha that question, not me. Because he seems to know me more than I know myself,” I said as I leaned back on my chair while nonchalantly folding my hands together.

He opened the cage and gently dropped the tray in front of me and resumed to his heat without shutting the cage.

I turned to him while trying to read what was going on in his head.

“You seem awfully confident opening the cage for me like that. Or am I being underestimated?” I asked while staring at him.

“Trust me that it will be the last thing I ever do, your highness. I just want to build a sense of trust between us,” he said.

“And how’s that working out for you? Because your scary big alpha won’t like this when we walk in here,” I replied.

While trying to keep my composure, my stomach growled heavily.

“You should have your food, your highness,” he said as he chuckled. “Your stomach is growling as hard as the alpha was last night.”

“Enough with the names,” I said seriously. “My name is Elara. The people who gave me those names are dead so you’re free to use it however you like.”

He grinned so wide. I could see his fangs.

“Now surely I know we’ll become good friends. You see how easy it was to just give in without stressing one another?” He grinned again and it seriously pissed me off.

I scanned around the cell keenly. If my eyes could stretch like an elastic then it’d probably be outside that big steel door by now looking for possible escape routes. But I won’t try to escape now.

I’ll go along with whatever this clown is saying and catch him off guard. He dared to underestimate me because I’m human.
