Chapter 2 His mistress
Chapter two
After finding out that I wasn’t the only one in James’s thoughts, living like nothing happened was difficult.
A week has gone by. Every time he came home exhausted, the times his phone rang and he excused himself, and each time he left my presence, I remember all the lies he had told me.
While he was away, I had the whole house bugged, but that wasn’t enough for me. I didn’t know when he was going to make a call.
I tried to get his phone to find out who the other woman was. I sure as hell didn’t believe him when he said he was sex calling an AI. I knew it was possible, but I didn’t believe him.
He left his cell on the couch one night when we were watching a movie. As soon as he was out of the room, I seized the opportunity. I input the password he once told me, only to realize that it had been changed.
I didn’t give up.
The first password was my birthday, which failed. I tried his birthday, which also failed.
Then I had an idea. Melissa.
They were very close since birth.
I tried her birthday, and sure enough, the phone unlocked. I quickly went to his messages, but surprisingly nothing. There were mostly work messages on there. I was about to go to his socials, but I heard his footsteps.
I put on the headphones and pretended to be engrossed in the movie.
James snatched his phone up first, peeping at me before he went back upstairs, muttering something about needing to call Melissa for work.
I wasn’t settled with what I saw.
Maybe he noticed that I was beginning to be suspicious, so he deleted the messages. I increased the volume on the TV and followed him upstairs after a while.
I saw him sneaking into one of the empty rooms, so I tiptoed after him. I hid just as he turned around to close the door behind him. To my surprise, he not only closed it but locked it.
But I already had a plan. I went straight to my room and took out the listening device.
“Hey, baby,” I heard him call out happily.
I ignored the pain in my chest. When was the last time he called me like that?
“Look, I can’t talk for long; she’s beginning to get suspicious,” he said.
I knew the ‘she’ was me. There was a pause before he continued.
“I know, I miss you too,” he sighed. “I want you so bad right now; I haven’t touched you in two days because of her.”
‘Oh, now I don’t have a name’
He said ‘her’ with so much disgust that I almost doubted he was talking about me. How could he look at me with love and kiss me when he talked about me like this to another woman?
I swallowed back the lump in my throat.
“Why don’t we meet today, for a quick one?” There was a pause before it continued. “Let’s meet today, at the club, I'll tell her I’ll be meeting the boys.”
I had heard enough.
I shut down my laptop and went to the living room, ordering a ride immediately. James came down shortly after, all dressed up. I quickly wiped the tears in my eyes and turned to him.
“Kalyssa. I'll be going to the club with the boys now,” he said without looking at me, picking up the keys as he went.
I wanted to try one last time. I wanted to know if he still had a place for me in his heart, so I called out to him.
“James.”
He stopped. I saw him take a deep breath.
“Do you want anything?” he turned to me. A smile on his face, but I could see the strain.
“Can I come with you?’’
I hoped he would agree, then I could forgive him, then I could tell him what I found, and we could work this out.
My phone dinged. My Uber had arrived. I could cancel it; I just needed his answer.
James stared at me. His smile softened.
“I’m going with the boys. Do you want to be the only lady there?” he said, then started walking backwards; it was obvious he was in a hurry.
“I’ll be going out now, can’t keep the boys waiting,” he said just as he shot the door.
I didn’t sit still. I wanted to see who he was cheating on me with… so I followed.
As soon as he drove out, I got into the Uber.
“Follow that car.”
The Uber driver glanced at me but said nothing. I was happy about that.
We got to the club. I got down and waited for James to park his car. When he did, I followed.
He was so excited to see his other woman that he didn’t notice me at all.
He went straight to a private room and knocked three times. I was far from him but close enough to take a peek inside the room.
It looked like they were having a party inside.
‘Maybe he wasn’t lying. Maybe everything was just a misunderstanding.’ I thought. But that was until the door opened again. I turned around so they wouldn’t see me.
James walked out with a woman. They left quickly, his hand on her butt.
I followed.
The woman looked very familiar. The bar was too dark to see her face. I followed them until they were out of the bar. My husband spoke into the woman’s ears, and she laughed.
My heart stopped at the sound of her voice.
I didn’t want to believe it.
They stopped at the back of the bar, where it was bright enough for me to see the face of my husband’s mistress.
It was none other than the woman I always confided in.
Melissa.
“I hope she didn’t suspect a thing.” Melissa said. James snorted. Raising one of her legs to wrap around his waist as she tugged at his belt.
Tears ran down my face as I watched the two people I had trusted the most betray me.
“She’s getting too suspicious. Just a little more time, and I will get her to sign the company over to me. We have to be careful,” James said.
I was hit with a stray bullet.
“We? You’re the one who couldn’t get enough of me,” Melissa laughed and then moaned when he thrusted into her.
“Can you blame me?” he growled. “I want you; I have to think of you when I fuck her, it's difficult.”
This information was all too hard to process.
My husband was having an affair with his cousin?
I didn’t know that I was moving backwards until I hit the trash can.
They both stopped.
“I think someone is here,” Melissa said, but my husband refused to let her go.
“Probably a cat,” he said as his thrust became faster.
“No, wait, I think it’s her, I can smell her,” Melissa said.
My eyes grew large. I heard James’s sniff.
I decided there was no use running, so I came out of hiding.
They were shocked to see me. My husband quickly stepped away.
“Kalyssa, I—”
“This is Ai,” I snapped, pointing at Melissa, who crossed her arms over her chest. Her kind eyes were now replaced by a snare.
“No kal—”
“I thought she was your cousin?” I asked.
How was he sleeping with his cousin?
My husband was about to defend himself when Melissa stopped him.
“That's enough, she was bound to know anyway. Yes, I am his cousin,” she said with no remorse in her eyes.
I turned to her.
“Mel, I thought we were… friends.” I could barely say that word.
“We were friends, that was until you started doing better than me,” she looked me over. “you have your own company, your own car and house, while I have to slave every day for peanuts. I was the one who fell in love with James first,”
“But you guys are fucking cousins for crying out loud,” I screamed at her.
“And so?” she pushed me by the shoulder.
I couldn’t believe this. Was this Melissa?
Anger clouded my thinking. I took out my phone and began walking away. I wanted to call my driver.
“Wait, where are you going?” Melissa called out to me.
I refused to turn back. I had no idea that James was fast approaching from behind. I dialed a random number I thought belonged to the driver. I didn’t care who; I just wanted to get out of there.
“Hey, can you come get me?” I said as soon as the call connected.
Before I could get a reply. I was struck on the head.
The world tilted sideways.
In a matter of seconds, I fell on my face. Pain shot from my head. Melissa gasped but didn’t move to help.
“Why did you do that?” she asked James.
“What! I panicked okay. If we let her go, our plans will be ruined,” he said as he threw away the rock. “Help me, let’s get her out of here.”
They each took one of my feet and pulled me like trash.
‘What did I do to deserve this?’
“Why?” I whispered before the world went black.
