Adeline's POV
The day I closed another major deal, my fiancé, the CEO, smiles and tells me the credit and the bonus are going to the new intern.
I watch him lean in close to her, laughing, and something in me just stops caring enough to fight for it.
I sign the transfer request and ship myself off to the most useless department in the company.
What I don't expect is that a few days later, the same man who never looked twice at anyone beneath him is going to be on his knees begging me to come back.
When Bryce Harmon announces it at the company's annual awards gala, in front of everyone, my mind goes blank.
That deal was mine.
I spent weeks figuring out exactly what the client wanted, pulled all-nighters, flew out to their headquarters to close it myself, and I was still editing the contract from a hospital bed.
And he hands it to his mistress, Tiffany Brooks, like it never had my name on it.
People around me start whispering, eyes cutting toward me.
Everyone here knows that account happened because of me.
What did Tiffany even do? Printed the wrong quote three times, brought Bryce a coffee once during a walkthrough, and cooed about how hard he works.
The spotlight hits the stage. Bryce looks down at Tiffany in the crowd and picks up the mic.
"This account was our biggest win of the year. And there's someone here I want to recognize. She's new, but through this whole process, she's been the one holding everything together behind the scenes, pulling files, running coffee, doing the unglamorous work nobody notices. That kind of dedication is something we should all learn from."
"So," he says, letting the pause sit, "I've decided to give Tiffany full credit for this account and promote her to assistant director of sales. I think we can all agree she's earned it."
The room goes quiet for a second, then a few people clap, half-hearted.
Tiffany walks up, trades a smile with Bryce, and it turns my stomach to watch.
"Thank you, Bryce, thank you everyone." Her voice cracks like she's holding back tears, and she looks straight at me. "Honestly, the person I owe the most to is Adeline. A few days ago she chewed me out in the office over a printing mistake, told me I didn't belong here... but I know she was doing it for my own good. This should really be hers."
I watch this whole performance and just feel tired.
So that's what tonight is about.
Three days ago, Tiffany sent our client's confidential pricing data to a competitor by mistake. If I hadn't caught it in time, we'd be staring down a massive penalty right now.
I called her out on it. She ran straight to Bryce in tears. He called me not long after, telling me to apologize. I didn't bother. I just hung up.
So tonight, this is just Bryce making it up to his new favorite.
Bryce turns to me. "Adeline, you've been here longer, you should know how to be the bigger person about this. New people mess up, that's normal. You're the senior one here, don't come down on her so hard. Why don't you come up and say sorry to Tiffany, and we'll call it even."
The whispering picks up around the room.
"That's messed up, right? Adeline busts her ass to land that account and he just hands it off?"
"Shh, you don't get it. Adeline's too much for him. Guys like the soft, sweet type, like Tiffany."
"She's about to lose it, isn't she? She's still his fiancée."
Bryce hears all this and lifts his chin, looking pretty pleased with himself.
He knows me well enough. Knows how much I care about this account, about this company. He thinks that's exactly the leverage he needs to make me fold.
I let out a breath, stand up, and walk to the stage.
Satisfaction flickers in Bryce's eyes. Tiffany shrinks back behind him a little, playing scared.
I don't look at either of them. I pull a USB drive out of my pocket, set it on the podium, and keep my voice flat.
"Since Bryce seems to think Tiffany's more than capable as assistant director, everything for this account going forward is on here: client contacts, preference notes, our pricing floor for phase two. I'm handing it off completely, effective now."
Bryce's smile freezes on his face.
He frowns, drops his voice. "Adeline, what is this? I just asked you to apologize. Don't push this."
I look at him, at the eyes that used to undo me and now just make me sick, and I smile. "Whatever Bryce says, goes. I'm done fighting for it. You two can keep it. Just don't let it burn you."
I don't stick around to see his reaction. I turn and walk off the stage.
"Adeline! Get back here!" Bryce shouts after me, furious.
I don't look back. I push through the doors of the ballroom and walk out.
