Chapter 109
Erin’s POV
The entire hospital shook at the sound of the explosion. At least, I think it was an explosion. It happened so fast I didn’t have the time to wrap my head around anything. My ears were ringing, and my head was pounding in pain.
As soon as we heard something exploding from outside, there was silence all throughout the hospital. The power flickered as well, and I could only imagine the damage that would do to the equipment around the hospital.
After the silence, I heard the screaming.
Everybody was terrified about what was going on, including the staff. However, the hospital security was trying to calm everybody down.
“What was that?” I finally managed to ask as I peered over at Henry who was examining outside from the window.
“I’m not sure. It sounded like something exploded…” he said slowly as he cracked open a window.
He poked his head outside and gazed around before pulling his body back inside. There was a questionable look on his face as he processed something.
“I smell bomb dust,” he said, looking over at me.
My heart fell into my stomach as I stared back at him. Bomb dust was used to start an explosion; but why would someone try to start an explosion here?
“The same reason they would set the other hospital on fire,” Emily said in a growl. “To kill you.”
“But did they explode the hospital? Or just outside the hospital?”
I didn’t say that out loud to Henry, but he looked at me anyways.
“I’m going to assess the damage. Just stay here,” he ordered as he went toward the door. My heart was beating quickly at the thought of him running into danger without me. I was his partner, and I should have been there with him. However, as soon as I started to pull out my IVs, he stopped me. “I mean it, Erin. Stay here.”
I sighed and watched as he ran from the room. I could hear the screaming of patients in rooms around mine and even some of the hospital staff were frantic.
I didn’t want to stay in bed and do nothing. I was already healing fairly quickly, and I felt as if I had enough strength to at least roam the hospital and make sure everybody was okay. I started to slide out of bed, but the door opened, making me freeze.
“Are you okay?” Gavin asked as he rushed into m my room.
I stared at him in shock, and I couldn’t help the gasp that escaped my lips.
He was completely covered in black soot. He also had some blood on his clothing, which probably belonged to him, but his wolf healed him it seems.
“What happened to you?” I found myself asking in a whisper.
“I was outside when the bomb went off,” he said, shaking his head. “I think it’s an attack to scare us… or maybe to warn us.”
“Is it the Slayers?” I asked with worry in my tone.
“It could be…” he said in return. “But I think Jill has been kidnapped.”
“What?” I gasped. “By who?”
“Judy Conrad.”
Judy Conrad? Why would she want to kidnap Jill? Why would she want to kidnap anybody? I was about to ask but he rushed toward the door like he was about to leave.
“Where are you going?” I asked quickly before he had the chance to go anywhere.
“I need to evacuate this hospital,” he said. “I can still smell the dust. That wasn’t the last of it.”
He was gone without another word.
My heart squeezed even more painfully in my chest. Now two men whom I cared for deeply were roaming around a hospital that could explode at any moment. They don’t even know if the person who set the bomb dust was in the hospital or not.
This could be incredibly dangerous.
I finished sliding out of bed and for a moment, I thought I was going to fall over. I haven’t used my legs in what felt like an eternity. But once I was on my feet, I felt my wolf strengthening me and my energy was returning.
I went across the room to pull on an old pair of jeans and a T-shirt, something Henry had brought from home so I could get out of the hospital gown that he knew I would hate. I rummaged through the bag he brought and found a ponytail.
Once my hair was tied off of my face I left the room, only to be met with a commotion of patients scattered across the hallway.
There didn’t look to be any damage to this level of the hospital, thankfully, but that didn’t mean they weren’t terrified for their lives.
If the explosion happened outside, I’m not so sure sending everybody outside would be a good idea.
Enzo was in and out of rooms, bringing people into the halls while Henry worked with his abilities to calm them down.
As I took a step in the direction of Enzo—
KABOOM!!
Another explosion went off and this time it hit the hospital!
The entire hospital shook once again, and everybody fell to the ground as the sound was too much for them to handle. The walls of the hospital began to crumble and fall around us, leaving rubble in its path.
For a moment, I thought I had gone deaf. I only heard a high pitch sound as my eardrums were ringing like crazy. I held my ears and kept my eyes closed; the power of the hospital had completely gone out and only the faint lighting of a fire in the waiting room remained.
Once my hearing came back, I heard the screaming and crying of everybody around me. They were growing frantic once again and they were rushing to leave. But they wouldn’t be able to leave through the waiting room with that fire.
I pulled myself to my feet and ran toward the waiting room doors, ignoring the shouting from both Enzo and Henry. As I got to the door, I felt the intensity of the fire; I hoped nobody was in there and got injured.
I opened the door slightly and saw the roaring of the fire; the flames nearly hit my features, causing me to wince in pain.
The sprinkler system was completely damaged by the explosion so that wasn’t going to be much help.
I engulfed myself in the flames, shutting the door behind me so it wouldn’t reach the others. I summoned all the water in the hospital to explode from the pipes that lay beneath and above me. Soon, the entire waiting room was flooded with water and the fire was starting to go out.
I sighed in relief when I didn’t see any bodies, but the entire room was completely damaged.
Gavin was behind me quickly.
“I’m bringing everybody outside through the backdoor. I’m trying to get them as far away from here as possible,” he said, grabbing onto my arm. “You’re coming with us.”
“Somebody should stay behind and investigate what happened,” I said, pulling my arm away from his grasp.
“Henry said he’s going to stick around for a little longer to take a look,” he assured me. “His main thought was getting you out of here as well.”
It was weird that Henry and Gavin were working together on this.
“Honestly, Gavin, I—”
My voice trailed off as I caught something from across the room. It looked like a notebook lying on the floor. But how could a simple notebook survive the explosion?
Gavin narrowed his eyes at me, confused as to what I was looking at. Then he saw it as well and he looked even more confused.
“Stay here,” he ordered me as he went to retrieve the notebook.
He frowned as he stared at the cover.
“This notebook belongs to the Killer organization. It must be enchanting to be indestructible. Whatever is in it, must be important,” he said with a timid frown on his face.
“The Killer organization?” I asked, raising my brows. “They have their own community. Why would they be in our hospital?”
As soon as I asked that question, the answer came to me quickly. Telling from Gavin’s face, he knew the answer as well.
“Because they were the ones who set the bomb dust…” I breathed.
Gavin pressed his lips together in a firm line as fury started rising throughout him.
“This was a terrorist attack.”
