Chapter 110

Erin’s POV

“A terrorist attack?” I gasped. “The Killers are attacking us?”

Gavin was flipping through the notebook, and I couldn’t tell from his face what he was thinking, but I knew it wasn’t good whatever it was.

“Gavin…?” I asked, stepping closer to him.

He finally closed the book and looked at me.

“They are going to attack the human world too,’ he said. “They put bomb dust everywhere. Apparently, somebody could produce dust out of thin air.”

My heart fell into my stomach at the sound of his words.

“We need to get Henry and get to the human world,” I said quickly, rushing back toward the halls where we left Henry.

Gavin grabbed my arm, halting me.

“Are you ever going to tell me why you keep running into danger like this?” Gavin asked.

He wasn’t angry, but his tone was curious with a mix of worry. I hated worrying him but I couldn’t tell him the truth. Not now with everything going on. It wasn’t the right time. It might never be the right time.

“I don’t want anyone else to get hurt,” I told him; which was completely the truth. “I’ve lost so many people in my life… people that I cared deeply for… I can’t watch anyone else suffer because of these assholes.”

“Because of the Killers?”

“And the Slayers,” I said firmly, keeping my eyes locked on his.

He held my gaze for a moment longer before releasing my arm.

“We need to evacuate the human world. I can try to get rid of the bomb dust, but I also need to get my sister to safety. I have a feeling Judy might be behind her disappearance.”

“If that’s true, could she be the reason for the bomb dust too? You don’t think she would bring Jill to the human realm… do you?”

We allowed that question to sit between us for a moment.

“We don’t have time to stand around,” Gavin said rushing toward the doors of the main entrance. “My sister is in danger. I can feel it. She won’t answer her mindlink.”

“Go ahead and search for her. I’ll stay behind with Henry, and we will meet in the human realm,” I assured him.

He looked uncertain for a moment; he held my gaze as he was inching closer to the door.

“We will meet up soon,” he said, matching the firmness of my tone.

I nodded my head once, giving him a small, reassuring smile. On that note, he turned and ran from the hospital.

I didn’t waste any more time; I joined Henry in the halls where he was still evacuating the hospital. He used his abilities to calm everyone and get them outside in an orderly fashion.

Henry’s abilities never ceased to amaze me.

“Are we almost cleared?” I asked, coming up from behind him.

He was finishing talking with one last person before they turned and joined the others in line that led out the backdoors, which lead to the back parking lot.

“I have the security team escorting them as far away from the hospital as possible. I still smell some bomb dust left so I fear there might be another explosion. We should get out of here as well.”

I nodded my head in agreement.

I decided to catch him up on everything once we were outside.

We joined a large number of hospital patients in the nearby woods. Everybody was shivering from the cold air but also there was still a little fear left in them despite Henry’s abilities.

Not before long, there was another huge explosion. This time, I was sure it took out most of the hospital. I winced at the thought of another hospital perishing due to an attack. The other hospital was still under reconstruction and now we have lost this one as well.

My heart ached.

“Where’s Gavin?” Henry asked, focusing his attention on me.

“He went to find his sister. She’s missing. He thinks Judy Conrad might have something to do with it.”

The look on Henry’s face wasn’t surprising, but disappointing. He sighed, slumping his shoulders slightly, and shook his head.

“I had a feeling… I’m glad I called to warn him earlier. Hopefully, he can get to her on time.”

“What do you mean?” I asked, narrowing my eyes. “You knew that Judy Conrad was staying with him?”

“I asked Gavin if he could help Judy out and let her stay with him. Just until her divorce is settled,” he explained.

Realization dawned on me at that moment.

“She’s your client.”

It wasn’t a question.

He nodded once.

“Yes. I’ve been representing Judy for a little while now. She’s going through a nasty divorce.”

“Why didn’t you tell me this sooner?” I asked, trying not to sound too hurt that he kept this from me and let me believe that Gavin was fooling around with this woman. “Why did you have her stay with Gavin?”

“I wasn’t keeping this from you deliberately. I’m not supposed to talk about my clients with anyone. But Theo wanted us to test Gavin and see if he could be trusted and this was the only way I could think of to test him. I wanted to see if he could help a human without a second thought…”

“So, Gavin was just helping you both out?” I asked, biting my lower lip as I often do when things get a little awkward.

I can’t believe I was jealous over this, and I acted so foolishly. I was so embarrassed by my behavior.

“Yes,” Henry confirmed.

I remembered suddenly that we needed to meet Gavin in the human world.

“We need to go,” I said, grabbing onto Henry’s arm. “Will the security team be able to handle things here?”

Henry glanced at the flock of patients, doctors, nurses, and security and then back at me with a nod.

“I can hear the sirens already. The police and fire department are on their way. They will have to transfer the patients to a safe location,” Henry explained. “Where are we going?”

He asked this as I was pulling him along with me.

“To the human world,” I answered. “We found a journal from the Killer organization. Someone must have left it behind. But they are planning on bombing the human world as well and we think Judy took Jill there.”

“You think she’s part of the killer organization?” Henry asked, rushing along with me.

We both shifted into our wolf forms and were racing through the forest.

“I have been representing her for some time now and I think I would have noticed if she had any kind of special abilities.”

“I’m not sure, but what we do know is that the Killers are the ones who attacked the hospital. Not the Slayers. They are planning on attacking the humans as well. We can’t let them get hurt.”

Henry silently agreed with me by running even faster. I had to work hard to catch up to him. I was out of practice when it came to this stuff.

We broke through the clearing of the forest after about an hour of running as fast as we could. We ran through the streets of the human world. They were mainly vacant because humans don’t typically hang out outside during cold weather like wolves do.

Henry continued to run through the streets, but I began to slow down when I smelled the potent stench of bomb dust.

It was literally everywhere.

Once Henry realized I was no longer following him, he stopped running as well and glared at me through his wolf’s eyes.

“We need to hurry. This stuff will go off any minute. We must evacuate the humans!”

I knew he was right, so I continued to run with him until we reached the center of the town. I instantly picked up the scent of Gavin and my wolf started to go crazy over him. It didn’t take me long to find him; he was standing in his human form in front of Judy.

Behind her was Jill who was tied up to a flagpole and gagged so she couldn’t scream or say anything. But she had tears running streaks of mascara down her narrow features.

“Well look who it is,” Judy said, glancing over at me with her icy gaze. “Did you come to join the fun?”

“Judy, what is going on?” Henry asked.

“Oh, Mr. Henry. I didn’t see you there. Glad you could join us as well,” Judy said smoothly. “Sorry to be such a bother to you.”

“Judy—” Henry tried to say again in a calmer tone.

“Save your breath,” Gavin interrupted. “This has been her plan the entire time… she’s been playing you, Henry.”

“What?” Henry asked, looking over at Gavin.

“She’s the leader of the Killer organization.”
