Chapter 112

Erin’s POV

Traitor?

I glanced up at Gavin who didn’t seem fazed by that wolf’s last word before he died.

“What did he mean by traitor?” I asked, narrowing my eyes at him.

“I don’t know,” Gavin shrugged. “It doesn’t matter now. He’s gone.”

He turned away from me and walked toward his sister who was struggling to get herself free. With an easy motion, he was able to untie the rope and it fell to the ground around her feet. He also untied her arms, and she ripped the tape off her mouth right away.

She burst into tears and wrapped her arms around her brother; her entire body quivering as she cried.

“It’s okay now. You’re safe,” he said to her gently. “Nobody is going to hurt you again.”

I was still staring at Gavin in shock; I had no idea what that wolf meant when he called him a traitor. It seemed like he knew Gavin somehow.

I mean, everybody knew Gavin because he was the most powerful and richest Alpha in the world. Even humans knew who he was.

However, this situation seemed different.

I didn’t realize Henry was standing behind me until he spun me around to face him. I could see the worry in his eyes as he examined my body.

“Are you okay? You were hurt pretty badly,” he said, staring at my fully healed collarbone and then at my leg.

“I’m fine,” I assured him. “Gavin healed me…”

He sighed in relief and then he took a step back to look at the scene around him. There were dead wolves all around us.

“We have to get rid of them before we unfreeze time,” I said, loud enough for Gavin to hear.

“Can you use your abilities to wash the bomb dust away?” Henry asked.

I nodded my head and stared up at the sky. Nothing a little rain couldn’t handle.

Soon, it was downpouring on top of us. Jill shrieked as the cold water poured around her, ruining her hair and her clothing.

Once I could no longer smell the bomb dust, I silently thanked my abilities, and the rain lessened until the clouds were white again.

“I want to go home,” Jill sniffled.

She looked miserable and I felt awful.

“I can take her,” Henry offered.

“Yeah, I need to stay here and clean this mess,” Gavin said.

He then looked at me and I saw compassion in his eyes; my heart jumped in my chest as it often does when he looked at me like that.

I hated that he still had this effect on me and my wolf.

“It’s because of our mate bond. We might have rejected him long ago, but we can still feel that bond considering we are unmarked by another,” Emily explained. “Until we are marked, Gavin will always have that effect on us.”

“You should go back with them,” Gavin said, eyeing me carefully. “The Slayers are after you for some reason and you shouldn’t be out in the open.”

“I refuse to be a prisoner,” I told him. “I can stay and help you.”

“Please, Erin. Don’t argue with me on this one,” Gavin said, keeping his eyes locked on mine.

I knew how incredibly serious he was, and my heart ached to know that he was this worried about me. I wanted to tell him that I was part of the Moonshadow organization and that I could handle myself, but there was something telling me I shouldn’t tell him.

I’m not sure what it is, but something about that wolf calling Gavin a traitor didn’t sit right with me.

“Erin, Henry, I need you both to report to headquarters as soon as you can. It’s urgent,” Theo said through a mindlink to us both.

I glanced up at Henry who tensed.

Theo didn’t sound happy.

I’m sure he knew something went down because the tracker embedded into my body was probably setting off alarm bells on Theo’s computer.

“Okay,” I finally said out loud to Gavin. “I’ll head back too.”

He looked relieved to hear that and he said nothing more as he turned to his sister. They spoke quietly for a few minutes before she hugged him tightly and then joined Henry and me.

We shifted into our wolves and ran through the woods until we reached Gavin’s packhouse.

“You can go inside and pack for the safe house. Beta Seth is going to take you there in an hour,” Henry told her.

She looked between us with a small frown.

“What about you two?” She asked. “Aren’t you coming inside? Or going to a safe house too? She said the Slayers are after you.”

“We have somewhere we need to be,” I told her. “Our priority right now is making sure you’re safe.”

She didn’t look convinced, but she didn’t argue either.

She threw her arms around me and hugged me tightly, before going to Henry and hugging him as well.

“Thank you for saving me,” she said to us through her tears.

“Gavin did most of the work,” I told her. “We were just there as backup.”

“But still; he wouldn’t have been able to do this without you. He’s incredibly lucky to have great friends like you. I’m sorry for hating you so much… I just care about him, and I don’t want him to get hurt again.”

I looked up at Henry who gave her a kind smile.

“Go inside,” he said to her softly.

She met his eyes and her body relaxed instantly; he was using his abilities to calm her. She nodded and went into the packhouse.

I looked back at Henry.

Now, we needed to face the music and see Theo.

We returned home and grabbed the moonstone necklaces before going back outside and opening the portal into the headquarters realm.

Theo was waiting for us in his office and as predicted, he didn’t look happy.

“Want to tell me what exactly happened earlier?”

“We were ambushed,” Henry explained. “The Killers were working with the Slayers.”

“You shouldn’t have put yourself in that position, to begin with. How did you not know that woman was the leader of the Killers?”

“She came to me as a woman divorcing her husband. I had no reason to not believe her,” Henry explained.

“You didn’t do a full background on her?” Theo asked. “I’ve been watching everything. The first time you actually spoke to her husband was recently. If you had spoken to him sooner, you would have suspected she wasn’t who she said she was.”

“I won’t make that mistake again,” Henry said.

“You two are my A team… the best the organization has. Erin might be out of practice, but you are both still a strong team. I need you to think smarter. The entire human world could have ceased to exist. You both could have died in that situation. I need you to be smarter going forward.”

“Yes, Theo,” we both said at the same time.

Theo then looked at me and I could see the wheels turning in his mind. There was another reason he was calling us here and I had a feeling I knew what it was about. If he’s been watching, that means he heard and saw everything we did.

“I might have been wrong initially about Gavin,” he finally said, confirming my thoughts. “I have concerns about his motives because of that one wolf that called him a traitor.”

“What are you thinking?” I asked him, worried about his answer.

“I’m thinking that Gavin might have been playing us the entire time. I believe he could be part of the Killer organization.”
