Chapter 123
Erin’s POV
I stared at Gavin with disbelief on my face.
I couldn’t believe he was asking me such questions. I had half a mind to tell him off; the other half wanted to walk away.
Honestly, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to say to him.
“I’m waiting,” Gavin said, leaning back in his chair and staring up at me with a stern expression on his face.
“That wolf called you a traitor before he died,” I said, recalling the events from the other day. “I wanted to know why he said that…”
“You think I lied to you?”
“No…” I said, lowering my gaze to the ground. I needed to appear weak to him because that’s what he sees me as. He would grow suspicious if I acted any other way. “But I think you know more than you are telling me.”
“That’s the definition of lying,” Gavin said, raising his brows at me. “When did you stop trusting me?”
“It’s been a long time since we’ve been friends.”
“That’s what we were? Friends?” Gavin asked; there was a ping of hurt in his voice.
“Ultimately, yes,” I answered honestly. “I mean, you were much more than a friend at one point. But at the end of the day, you were still one of my best friends. You, Jessie, and Tyler.”
“I already told you; I don’t know what that guy was saying. I don’t know why he called me a traitor,” Gavin said through his teeth.
“Then, maybe he thought you were somebody else,” I said with a shrug. “I just wanted to make sure you weren’t lying to me. That’s why I was asking around. I’ll drop I now.”
I glanced at his desk and saw his phone lying in front of him. It was so close to me, and yet so far away. I could grab it if I wanted to and read everything in there. But I knew he would stop me and probably kick me from the packhouse.
Part of me wanted to tell him that I knew about the blackmailer and that I wanted to help him. But I stopped myself from doing that as well.
There was no way I was going to be able to get into his phone. At least not right now.
“Why did you send your date away?” I asked, trying not to sound bothered by the fact that he was on a date.
He narrowed his eyes at me, trying to read the expression on my face, but I wasn’t giving him much of anything.
“I was done with her,” he said in return, turning back to his computer.
“You just returned back with her. You couldn’t possibly be done already,” I muttered, folding my arms across my chest.
“Do you really need to know the reason why I sent her home?” Gavin asked, staring at me, which proved to be almost painful.
I bit onto my bottom lip, chewing on it as he poured his dark eyes into me.
“Yes,” I found myself answering.
He slowly stood to his feet, and I stood my ground. I watched as he walked around his desk and toward my direction.
I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat, waiting for him to close the gap that separated us.
“Your presence killed the mood…and plus,” his tone dropped to a low and incredibly sexy tone as he ran the back of his hand down the side of my face, leaving chills in its place. “I knew she couldn’t satisfy me the way you can.”
I opened my mouth to say something, but I couldn’t even think of the words. He was so hypnotizing; Emily was quietly taking him in and basking in his amazing scent.
I stared up at him, dumbfounded, speechless.
His fingers trailed down my bare arm, sending goosebumps to occupy my flesh.
I slapped his hand away from me quickly, watching as his mouth turned into a frown.
“Have you lost your mind?” I asked, raising my brows at him. “I’m not your second choice.”
“Second choice?” He asked with humor lacing his tone. “You have never been my second choice, Erin.”
“You wanted to spend the evening with her and now you don’t,” I said, shaking my head. “I won’t be your backup plan.”
Suddenly, there was a knock on his office door, making us both step away from one another. I could see the annoyance on his face as he ordered his Beta to enter.
Seth stood at the doorway, and for a moment, he stared between the two of us with curiosity before he glanced at Gavin.
“There’s something you need to see.”
Gavin frowned at Seth’s outstretched phone and grabbed it from his grip.
It was a breaking news story.
The news anchor, a slender woman, stood on his screen.
“Alpha Gavin was spotted with a young waitress in an affectionate manner. Could this be the new future Luna?”
My heart fell into my stomach.
Was she talking about me? Where was I spotted?
An image of me with Gavin, outside the restaurant, was soon brought onto the screen.
I gasped as I grabbed the phone from Gavin’s hands.
We were kissing outside my car. This was the moment before we…
“How did they get this photo?” I asked, staring over at Gavin. “Who took this photo?”
“I’m always being watched by the press. It doesn’t surprise me that they managed to capture something like this. I knew it was only a matter of time…”
My heart was beating quickly in my chest when a familiar woman appeared on the screen. It was one of the nurses at the hospital.
“He stayed by her side all night. It was obvious that they were an item. I’m so glad he finally found someone to share his life with. His pack needs a Luna!”
What was she talking about?
A Luna?
I never agreed to something like this.
I knew word would soon travel back to Henry and Theo. I was probably going to get in trouble for this.
“I will make a few phone calls and explain everything,” Gavin muttered turning away from me. “Don’t worry. I won’t let your reputation be ruined.”
What did he mean by that?
I didn’t have time or energy to ask him, I turned away from him, shaking the thought out of my mind.
“I should go,” I said in return, brushing past Beta Seth as I left the office.
I ran up the stairs and back into the guest room. I grabbed my phone off the bed and saw that I had a few text messages from Henry.
My heart was so heavy in my chest; I could hardly look to see what he had to say.
“Future Luna??” The text message said. “What were you thinking?”
“I didn’t mean for this to happen,” I sent him a text back. “They took the picture out of context.”
It was a lie, but he didn’t need to know that.
“You were kissing, Erin,” Henry said, and I knew his tone was anything but friendly. “ You are letting your guard down.”
I stared at his text for a moment before responding.
“No, I’m not. I’m more focused if anything. I need to find out who that blackmailer is and clear Gavin’s name.”
“Why are you more focused now all of a sudden?” Henry asked.
I didn’t know how to answer him, but thankfully, I didn’t have to.
Soon, Theo was calling.
I was preparing myself for the wrath of Theo.
It ended up being a three-way call with Henry included.
“Use this for your advantage,” Theo went on to say as soon as I answered the phone.
I wasn’t expecting that.
“What?” Both Henry and I said at the same time.
“Make the general public believe that you are in a relationship with Gavin. Get Gavin to trust you, and then get his phone.”
