Chapter 124
Erin’s POV
I was usually confident in my abilities, but this wasn’t something I was sure I could pull off.
Rumors were already spreading across the werewolf world like wildfire and there was no way I was going to be able to put a stop to it. I hated to admit it, but Theo was right. I had to use this to my advantage.
Gavin said he was going to make a phone call and handle these rumors. It wouldn’t be long now before his statement was released and the rumors were shut down for good. But maybe they didn’t have to be shut down.
I could tell him that I wanted to be with him and go to that Alpha convention with him. My stomach felt uncomfortable at the very thought of it, but Emily seemed to have perked up a little.
She liked the idea of going to that convention with Gavin. She didn’t like the idea of anyone else going with him. Maybe this could benefit us both.
But I had to act quickly before Gavin made any phone calls.
I left the guest room and went straight for his office door. I could hear light murmurs coming from inside of his office and I knew that Beta Seth was speaking with him about something.
The spy in me wanted to listen to their conversation, but I also wanted to respect Gavin’s privacy as his long-time friend.
But I suppose I had to put my friendship away for right now and do my job. It was for his own good.
I pressed my ear to the door and tuned into what they were saying.
“These rumors are really bad, Alpha. Everybody had seen the news report and now they are thinking that Erin is your future Luna.”
“I already told you; I’ll deal with the rumors. I’m also going to make some calls to the hospital and get that nurse fired. She had no business speaking on our personal matters as she did,” Gavin said through his teeth no doubt.
“The public might not believe you. I mean, you were kissing her. What were you thinking?” Seth asked, with frustration clear in his tone.
“This isn’t for you to worry about, Beta.”
“If the kingdom thinks you are hopping around from woman to woman, then you can forget about gaining any respect,” Seth said in return.
I took that as my opportunity to interrupt them. I pushed in the door, making myself known to them. They both fell silent and looked at me, Gavin with a curious frown and Seth with more annoyance.
“Then, let’s not allow them to think he’s hopping around from woman to woman,” I said, folding my arms across my chest. “Beta Seth is correct; everybody already saw that photo of us kissing, it’s clear something was happening with us. If you speak with the media and shut down the rumors of me being the future Luna, then they will think we were just messing around together. It’ll look bad on your end.”
“I’m glad we can finally agree on something,” Seth muttered, leaning against the back wall of the office.
“So, what do you suggest we do?” Gavin asked, sighing as he rubbed the bridge of his nose with his index finger and thumb.
“I can pretend to be your future Luna,” I said, meeting his dark gaze.
He rose his brows at me.
“You want to pretend to be my Luna?” He repeated, unsure if he heard me correctly.
“That way it doesn’t look like you are just sleeping around with anyone. After the Alpha Convention, we can stage a breakup. I’ll make you look good.”
He stared at me for a long while, not saying anything. The silence in the room was thick as they both processed my offer.
“I don’t trust her,” Seth muttered. “But it could work.”
I gave Seth a look that said, “It’ll definitely work.”
Then, I looked back at Gavin and smirked.
“I don’t think you have many more options,” I said with a shrug.
“And after the convention, what if we don’t want to break up?” Gavin asked with a playful grin.
My heart quickened its pace in my chest and I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat.
“We will deal with that when the time comes,” I answered, trying not to sound flustered.
“Okay,” he said with a head nod, keeping his eyes locked on mine. “Beta, set up a press conference for my future Luna and me for this afternoon.”
“Yes, Alpha,” Beta Seth said, nodding his head only once.
He began to walk past us but paused once he reached me.
“Don’t try anything stupid,” he muttered, for only my ears alone.
I tensed but I said nothing in return as Seth left the room, leaving only Gavin and me in his office. I felt like I could finally breathe. Despite everything that happened between us, I still felt incredibly comfortable around him.
My wolf felt at ease.
Emily lowered herself in my mind’s eye and sat in her resting position. She was submissive to him and that worried me more than anything.
“I must say, I’m surprised you want to help,” Gavin said, leaning against his desk in the same fashion that Theo usually did. He folded his arms across his chest and narrowed his eyes at me. “Why do you want to help me?”
“Despite what you might think, I still care about you,” I told him honestly. “I don’t want to see you fall because of these stupid rumors. I’m sorry for my part in all of this.”
“I was the one careless and embraced you in public. I have eyes on me everywhere I go. I should have known better.”
“It was both of us,” I said with a shrug. “So, let me help you make this right. It’s the least I can do. Besides, you are letting me stay here for the time being. I’d like to do my part.”
“I appreciate that,” he said, but I could see the uncertainty on his face.
I had hurt him during our last intimate encounter. I told him that he was nothing more than a distraction. I said that so I could grow some distance from him; he was becoming more of a distraction than I could handle. I needed to find out who his blackmailer is and help him defeat her. I needed to clear his name and prove that he isn’t working with the Killers.
I needed to stay focused on my mission and not on the incredible sex.
But as I stood in his office, staring into his dark blue eyes, I found my mouth to be watering and my wolf was practically panting. I was growing warm being in his very presence and I had to clear my throat and take a step away from him before I found myself naked again.
I was doing so well resisting him up until I started staying at his packhouse.
“Our mate looks so good in the lighting of his office,” Emily purred. “I want him to have us on his desk.”
“Emily, please try to behave yourself,” I pleaded to my wolf, not wanting to give in to these temptations.
“Maybe we could seal the deal,” Gavin said as he took a step toward me, his demeanor changing, becoming sexier.
I knew what he meant by “seal the deal” and I had to bite onto my bottom lip to keep from whimpering.
I saw his wolf, Roman, at the edge of his eyes and I knew Gavin was losing the battle against his own wolf. Just like I was losing the battle against mine.
He ran his hand down the side of my face which always seemed to leave me with goosebumps.
“After all, you are my future Luna.”
