Chapter 132
Erin’s POV
I stared at Henry with disbelief for a long while; he was being serious.
“I don’t understand,” I finally said, narrowing my eyes at him. “This wasn’t even my idea, it was Theo’s. We don’t have a choice.”
“We always have a choice, Erin. I don’t think it’s a good idea,” he said, shaking his head. “I’m putting my foot down and pulling you out of this.”
“What has gotten into you, Henry?” I asked, folding my arms across my chest. “Where have you been?”
“It doesn’t matter. But as your partner, I think this is a terrible idea. I don’t trust Gavin and I think he’s leading you right to the Killers and the Slayers. He’s doing it on purpose.”
“You don’t know what you are talking about,” I said in return. “Gavin would never betray me.”
“His entire family is being blackmailed and I have reason to believe that it’s connected to the Slayers. They aren’t going to rest until you are killed. They won’t leave their family alone until you are in their custody. Do you really think he’s just going to ignore that?”
“No…” I admitted. “But that’s why I want to tell him I’m part of the Moonshadow organization and that I can help him protect his family.”
“That’s a terrible idea,” Henry said a little harshly. “That would give him more reason to capture you. You are the reason the Slayers are after him and his family. You killed their leader, and they are after you for that reason. They are blackmailing him into capturing you.”
“They’ve been after him for much longer,” I said, recalling Gavins’ story.
“I have a bad feeling about this, Erin. You need to trust me. Leave Gavin and come with me. Don’t go to that convention.”
“I can’t believe you are saying this,” I said to him, shaking my head with disgust on my face. “We were supposed to be in this together. You are my partner, and you are supposed to have my back.”
“I do have your back; that’s why I am here.”
“I’m not backing down from this plan. If you read any of my messages, you would know that the blackmailer is going to be at that convention and that I need to be there as well. Regardless of if it’s a trap or not, I still need to be there and I’m hoping I’ll have my backup there in case anything happens,” I said firmly.
“I think it’s stupid to walk into a trap,” he said, his frown deepening.
“We are the Moonshadow organization,” I hissed, lowering my tone drastically. “Walking into danger is what we are supposed to do.
“I’m going to talk to Theo and find out if there’s something else we can do.”
“Don’t you dare Henry,” I found myself growling. “This plan works. I’m going to be in the same area as the blackmailer. You might be right about it all being connected because I truly believe she’s the leader of the Slayer organization. I’m finally going to find out who she is.”
“All the more reason to step away,” Henry said in return. “It’s a suicide mission. The Slayers are much stronger, and they are no joke.”
I took a step away from him; there was something off about this entire conversation and I wasn’t liking this.
He was hiding something from me and I was questioning whether or not I can trust him or not.
“I have nothing more to say to you Henry,” I said, shaking my head at him. “I need you to leave.”
“Erin, I’m only trying to do what’s best for you…”
“No, you are trying to do what’s best for you. You are being selfish. You don’t care what happens to Gavin, as long as I don’t run back to him. I’m disappointed and disgusted in you,” I growled through my teeth.
“That’s not fair…”
“No…what’s not fair is you trying to convince me to go against the organization’s orders. Does Theo even know you are here?”
He sighed, but he shook his head.
“I’m sorry, Erin. I just care about you, and I don’t want to see you get hurt,” he admitted, lowering his gaze. “I never want to see you hurt.”
“It comes with the job,” I said, keeping my eyes on his. “I thought you knew that better than anyone.”
He said nothing as I turned away from him.
“Please, Henry…” I managed to continue. “Don’t show up here randomly again. It could ruin everything. You are supposed to keep your distance per the orders of Theo. Also, maybe answer your phone when I call and text.”
I began to walk away, expecting him to try and stop me, but he didn’t.
Once I got back inside, Kelsey was staring at me with a questioning look in her eyes.
“What was that about?” She asked, eyeing me carefully. “That looked intense.”
“Just a typical after-marriage argument,” I said in return. “Nothing to worry too much about.”
She didn’t look certain, but she turned away and went back to working at the counter. Meanwhile, some of my coworkers were watching me intently.
I thought they were going to start some stuff like they usually do, but instead, they gave me a smile.
“You look nice today, Erin. It’s like you are glowing.”
I frowned, unsure of what to make of that.
“Thank you,” I said in return.
I wasn’t used to them being nice to me.
“We saw you on the news. You looked stunning with Gavin by your side. You are so lucky to be with someone as rich and incredible as Gavin Pierce.”
Now it was starting to make sense; they wanted an “in” with Gavin.
“He is quite amazing,” I said in return. “I’m very lucky indeed.”
They chuckled as they went back to work.
…
Gavin’s POV
Could this blackmailer really be the leader of the Slayer organization?
The blackmailer was never clear on what exactly she wanted from him. So far, it’s only been about sex. Whenever the topic of other women came up, she would grow incredibly jealous.
It was like she wanted an entire relationship with him, but she never actually said those words.
It was incredibly strange; but Gavin’s family was at risk, so he never fully questioned it until that moment. He continued to do what she wanted while he searched for the Moonshadow organization and enlisted them to help.
He was willing to pay them whatever it took as long as his family was safe.
But now the blackmailer was forcing him to end things with Erin and Gavin felt sick over it. He didn’t want to lose her again and he wasn’t planning on it.
Roman wasn’t going to let that happen. Erin was their mate, and he was determined to be with her till the end.
He no longer cared about his reputation; all he cared about was Erin.
She had to have known that.
There was a knock on his office door, bringing him out of his mind.
“Come in,” he ordered in a gruff tone to his beta.
Seth walked into the office holding a manila envelope.
“This came in the mail for you,” Seth said, placing the envelope on the desk.
Gavin stared at it for a long while; he recognized the writing on the front of the envelope. This had to have been from his blackmailer.
A tight knot formed in his stomach as he stared at his name scrawled across the envelope in black ink.
“Leave me,” he said to his Beta without taking his eyes off the envelope.
Beta Seth nodded and turned away leaving Gavin alone.
After a moment longer of staring at the envelope, he finally opened it.
He wasn’t prepared for what he was about to see.
It was a picture of a safehouse and in the window was his sister, Jill.
