Chapter 139
Erin’s POV
How could I have been this stupid?
I let her distract me for so long that I didn’t even think that those at the convention could be in danger. The convention was filled with incredibly rich and powerful wolves; not to mention more wolves with abilities.
It was the perfect place for the Slayers to raid and that’s exactly what they were doing at that moment while I was having an argument with Gavin in a hotel room.
We had to stop the argument to get back to that convention and I knew he understood that as well.
Jessie was long gone by the time we got outside. We shifted into our wolf forms and went straight to the convention. I could already hear the screaming and the howling of the wolves as the vampires began raiding the place.
My heart was pounding wildly against my chest once we neared the entrance.
“Now would be a great time to tell me that the rest of the organization is going to be here to help,” Gavin said through his teeth; I knew he was still upset with me.
“They are supposed to be here,” I told him; however, I couldn’t sense any of them nearby.
I was hoping Henry would be here by now to help. He texted me earlier that he would be, but I didn’t see him.
“Tell me you have a plan,” Gavin growled.
It was practically a blood bath; I realized not all the raiders were Slayers, some of them were also Killers.
They were using their abilities to torment those in the convention.
“We try to maintain everything until the organization gets here,” I told him.
He didn’t look certain, but he nodded and ran into the convention to use his abilities to freeze time. The only issue is it only worked for those who don’t have abilities of their own.
Soon, was tackled to the ground by a wild wolf.
He growled viciously in my face; luckily, I had enough training that I was able to kick him off me and counterattack. We fought for a while, and he put up a fair fight until I finally had the upper hand and tackled him to the ground. I bit into his shoulder blade with my canines, stunning him.
Blood spilled from his body as I ripped his throat.
I tossed him to the side and went to fight some others.
Everywhere I looked, there were more wolves jumping at me; thankfully, Gavin had jumped in my way and was able to get to most of them before they got to me.
I watched him, with admiration, as he put up a strong fight against the wolves and vampires.
Vampires were gaining more strength from drinking from those with abilities; we needed to stop them before they drink every last drop of blood.
I also needed to get those who were frozen in time off the convention grounds and to safety.
Gavin and I couldn’t hold them off by ourselves; at least not forever.
I needed that backup.
I decided to send a mindlink to Theo even though I knew he didn’t like that form of communication. He always said it wasn’t secure enough and we needed to be careful.
But I had no other choice.
“Theo! Where’s that backup?!” I asked through the mindlink.
There was silence on the other end for a long while before he finally responded.
“They were supposed to be there by now? It seems they were told to back down,” Theo said; I could hear the anger in his voice. “I sent them back; I told them I didn’t give them this order. I’m heading there too. I’m getting a bad feeling about something. Keep fighting. Your vitals seem good for right now, so you didn’t sustain too much damage.”
He ended the mindlink without another word.
I looked over at Gavin who was still fighting effortlessly.
I went to his side to help him fight the mound of vampires that were attacking him. I shifted in and out of my wolf form. Fighting in all different ways.
The most important thing was not allowing them to bite us.
A lot of wolves, those with abilities and those without sustained a lot of injuries.
I had lost sight of Jessie long ago; come to think of it, I hadn’t seen her since we left the hotel suite. She said she was heading here to help her people with this raid, but I was thinking maybe she was lying again.
I have been deceived by her so much that I felt nothing but anger fueling through me. She was supposed to be my best friend, but she was nothing more than a terrible hybrid who wanted me dead for whatever reason.
I still didn’t understand why she hated me so much; it had to be more than just her love for Gavin. There had to be something else she didn’t tell me.
She kept saying she wanted to take everything from me, just like I had taken everything from her.
She had mentioned her family was after Gavin’s family for a long while. Gavin told me the story about how he was kidnapped by the Slayers. The leader of the Slayers convinced his family to give up their powers in exchange for Gavin’s life and eventually, they caved.
That’s when it suddenly hit me; the reason Jessie hated me so much. The reason she was after Gavin. The reason she was in charge of the Slayer organization.
I grabbed onto Gavin’s arm, stopping him from running into the danger of the fight once again.
“I get it now,” I said, shaking my head. “The reason why she’s coming after me. It’s not because of you…it’s not because of this high school crush. She wants to watch me suffer because I did something awful to her… something she is seeking revenge for…”
“What’s that?”
“It’s so obvious to me. She’s after you because it’s what her family wanted long ago. They took your parent’s powers and now that you have your powers…her organization wants to drain you from it. She’s after me because her father was the former leader of the organization,” I explained.
“Okay?”
“Gavin…I was the one who killed her father.”
He narrowed his eyes at me, and realization dawned on him as well.
“You killed the last leader of the Slayer organization?!”
This wasn’t about a crush she had on a Gavin; this was about revenge.
She was avenging her father’s death and finishing what her family had started.
I went to continue the fight, but then I saw Henry in the distance.
Relief flooded me as I ran toward him.
“Henry!” I said eagerly. “You made it! I figured out her motive and I know who the leader is.”
I didn’t get a chance to say much more to him because I noticed he was talking to someone; it was someone who wasn’t a part of the Moonshadow, but a part of the Killer organization.
“I saw others running outside; you are letting them get away! Go after them!!” He growled.
My entire body was frozen.
He turned to another member of the Killers and growled, “Raid for supplies. Take everything you can.”
“Yes, sir,” the wolf said, running into the fight.
“Henry?” I gasped.
He turned to me, and I saw that there was zero remorse on his face. He looked straight-up evil.
“I told you that you shouldn’t have come here,” he said grimly. “It wasn’t safe for you.”
“You are working for them?” I asked, taking a step away from him.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way. I’m sorry…”
“I don’t understand…” I said hoarsely. “All these years…?”
He kept his dark eyes on mine.
“Don’t you get it, Erin…? I have never worked for Moonshadow. I was undercover for the Killers.”
“But why…?” I managed to choke out.
“Isn’t it obvious? You’re a smart girl… you should have guessed it by now.”
He paused and I waited for him to continue.
A smile spread across his lips and then he said, “I’m their leader.”
