Chapter 142
Erin’s POV
Pregnant?!
My heart thudded violently against my chest.
Could I really be pregnant?
I pressed the palm of my hands to my stomach and felt that warmth radiating throughout my body and giving me strength.
I gasped.
I knew at that moment that it was true.
I had a little pup in me.
I kept my hands on my stomach as I turned to face Jessie.
“You wouldn’t hurt me knowing that I’m carrying a small pup,” I said to her, narrowing my eyes at her stunned expression.
“You’re pregnant?!” She gasped, staring at me with wide eyes. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
In high school, when envisioned getting pregnant with Gavin’s baby much later in life, I obviously thought it would be much different than this.
I never imagined in a million years that my best friend would be trying to kill me.
I always thought Jessie would be the first person who knew that I was pregnant, and I guess in a way she was. But it also seemed as if she was going to be the last.
Emily would do whatever it took to protect our pup, but I feared it wouldn’t be enough.
Just as I was about to say something more, Gavin ran through the entrance of the rooftop.
He was staring at me with large and worried eyes before looking at Jessie and his demeanor had changed entirely.
“Stay away from her, Jessie,” Gavin warned. “Your beef isn’t with her. It’s me.”
“That’s where you are wrong, Gavin,” Jessie shot back, glaring at him. “My beef has always been with little miss perfect Erin. Now her luck is coming to an end.”
“It’s my blood that you want; just take it and leave,” Gavin demanded.
“Gavin, no!” I growled back, snapping a look at him.
He was willing to give up his abilities to save me.
“It was my parents that wanted your blood. All I ever wanted was you. I loved you for as long as I can remember. But like everyone else… you chose that bitch.”
“She’s my mate—”
“Even before you found out she was your mate; you never even looked in my direction,” Jessie hissed with tears filling her eyes. “These last few months have been the best of my life because you were all mine. Even if it was because I blackmailed you, I knew it was only a matter of time before you truly started to love me.”
“So, that was your plan?” Gavin asked in disbelief. “To get me to love you?”
“Then, she came back into your life, and you started reversing back into your old ways. It was all about Erin all the time and I couldn’t stand it. So, I made a plan to lure her here so I can finally end her life.”
“I love her, Jessie,” Gavin said firmly, trying to get through to her. “I always have and…” he looked at me, meeting my eyes and making it impossible to breathe. “…I always will”
“You should tell him we are having his pup,” Emily purred.
“Now doesn’t seem like a good time,” I told her.
“I’m not going to let you touch her,” Gavin continued.
“How can you still defend her?!” Jessie cried. “She’s been part of the Moonshadow organization this entire time, Gavin. She’s been lying to you. She’s not who she claims to be.”
“When did you start hating me?” I asked her, hearing the hurt in my own voice. I stepped around Gavin who was protectively in front of me. “Since we met in elementary school?”
Jessie looked like she was about to answer but Gavin’s voice stopped her.
“Erin, maybe you shouldn’t—”
I snapped him a look, stopping his words.
“I don’t need you to fight my battles. I’m more than capable of doing so myself,” I said to him, narrowing my eyes in his direction.
He stayed still for a moment, but then he took a step back.
I turned back to Jessie.
“Answer my question, when did you start hating me?”
“The moment I met you,” she seethed. “When your parents came to our dance recital and mine couldn’t even bother with it. I saw the way they looked at you; they loved you. My parents never looked at me like that. They were never around.
“I’m sure that’s not true, Jessie—”
“Shut up! You don’t know anything,” Jessie cried.
She stepped closer to me with her fists clenched and her teeth, equipped with her long fangs, were revealed. I could hear her wolf growling and the anger surfaced in her eyes.
At that moment, I noticed Jessie was holding a dagger.
It was made out of Silver, which meant it was fatal to werewolves.
My heart began racing against my chest at lightning speed and a knot formed in the pit of my stomach, making me want to throw up.
She was really trying to kill me.
“Jessie… put down the dagger,” I said to her, clenching my own fists.
I knew there were water pipes all over the place, so using my abilities would be easy up here.
“You know, the day you killed my father I wanted nothing more than to watch you suffer. I wanted to take everything you had and then I wanted to take your life. So, I faked my own death and took over the Slayer organization in my father’s honor. Henry was a great ally. We had a common goal. Wanting to separate you two…” Jessie muttered. “I didn’t tell Henry my entire plan obviously. But Henry leaked the messages about me being a hybrid which made faking my death a lot easier.”
“Henry did that?” I asked in a hollow sounding voice. I was beginning to feel lightheaded.
“Of course, he did,” Jessie laughed. “You really thought you did that? You are way too careful. But yeah, he persuaded you into quitting the organization and living a normal and boring life with him as your normal and boring husband.”
Jessie shook her head at the memory.
“Keeping you apart worked for a little while as I spent the last three years growing a strong enough reputation that will give me allies and eyes everywhere in the world. Once I was strong and undefeatable, I came to blackmail Gavin into being with me. I also grew strong enough to defeat you and take my revenge!”
I stood in the face of someone who used to be my best friend; or at least someone who pretended to be.
She was never my friend and that was obvious now.
“Erin!!” I heard Gavin yelling just as I saw Jesse lunging toward me with the dagger.
Thankfully, Emily was quick and pulled me out of the way with the little strength she had left inside.
“Please, you don’t want to do this,” I said to her with tears falling from my eyes.
I didn’t want to hurt her.
I could feel the rumbling of the water pipes; they were just about ready to burst.
“I want nothing more than to do this,” she growled as she began to run toward me again.
I ran to avoid her once again, using the strength of my wolf to move me quicker.
Just as I turned around to face Jessie, she was already on top of me with the dagger. Gavin was running toward us quickly in his wolf form.
I saw the fury in his wolf’s eyes as he lunged toward Jessie, but before he could reach us, the pipes burst, spraying water everywhere on the roof in fast and heavy waves.
Jessie went flying backward; her screams pierced the night as she threw the dagger in my direction.
I didn’t have enough time to react; the water momentarily clouded my vision and then I saw the dagger going directly toward my stomach.
“Emily help!!!” I screamed to my wolf.
Emily quickly shifted into her true form just as Gavin threw himself in front of me.
