Chapter 143
Erin’s POV
“…!!”
“Oh, my goddess,” Emily cried from within me.
I felt her heart shattering just as I saw Gavin falling to the ground.
Red was oozing under my wolfed paws as his blood mixed with the water.
The water was done spraying, and Gavin and I were left on the roof alone. I fell to my knees and placed my hands on Gavin’s chest. The dagger stuck out of him, and blood continued to ooze.
“Gavin… no…” I whispered as tears fell from my eyes. I felt so broken at this moment; I couldn’t lose him. Not like this.
“Don’t let her get away,” he said in a raspy whisper. “She’s still alive…”
I knew I needed to go after her; I couldn’t let her get away after it took us so long to find her. But the image of Gavin bleeding out before my eyes was too painful. I couldn’t just walk away from him.
Theo and a couple of the men from the organization burst through the doors of the rooftop and he narrowed his eyes at me.
“Theo, he needs the hospital,” I said, trying to keep a strong composure.
Theo and then the men ran towards Gavin as I stood to my feet and ran in the direction that Jessie had fallen.
I saw her falling over the side of the rooftop; I feared what I might see when I looked over the edge. I had already seen her die once; I wasn’t sure I was strong enough to see it again.
As I looked over the edge, I was surprised to see that she wasn’t there.
“How is that possible?” Emily asked the question I was thinking.
“I don’t know,” I answered.
I looked back at Gavin, and I saw that they had removed the dagger from his chest and were applying pressure.
“A medic-copter is on its way to take him to the hospital,” Theo said as he came to stand with me. “I’m assuming she escaped?”
“I sprayed her with the pipes, and she fell off the roof,” I explained, looking back down the side of the building. ‘I don’t know where she is.”
“Something tells me it’s going to take a lot more than a little water to defeat her forever,” Theo said with a worried frown. “But something tells me we aren’t going to see her for a while. Now that you know her true identity, and the press is on her tail. It’ll keep her away for a while.”
“Do you think we will ever truly get world peace?” I asked, sighing.
I could hear the sounds of the helicopter and I felt like I could finally breathe. Soon, Gavin would be able to get medical attention.
“Yes,” Theo answered. “I truly do believe we will.”
Before anything else was said, the voice of the men helping Gavin, broke through my thoughts.
“Boss, we are losing him. He’s unconscious and he stopped breathing.”
My heart fell into my stomach as I ran to him; I knelt beside him and pressed my lips against his.
I blew as hard as I could until his stomach puffed out.
“Come on, Gavin… breathe…” I pleaded with him.
My body trembled as I stared down at the man I love. He’s barely holding onto life. The dagger went straight through his chest and was plunged into his heart. It was not only draining him of his abilities, but it was killing him painfully and slowly.
This was all my fault.
Soon, he was gasping for breath again and I fell backward. Thankfully, the medic-copter came into view.
It didn’t take them long to reach us. They were able to hook Gavin up to some ventilation and wrap bandages around his wound on the spot. They then put him on a gurney and slid him into the helicopter.
“I’m going with them,” I shouted to Theo over the noise of the helicopter engine.
“We are going to do a patrol of the city to make sure all the Slayers are taken care of,” Theo shouted in return. “Go with them for right now, but then join us later.”
It was an order.
I nodded to him as he took off with the rest of the organization. I got into the helicopter, and we were quickly flown to the nearest hospital.
…
Gavin’s POV
Pain consumed Gavin as he woke from his long sleep. To Gavin, it felt like he’s been out of it for years. But in reality, it’s only been less than 12 hours.
He knew right away, from the smell alone, that he was in a hospital.
But the reason for his being in a hospital was unknown to him. He hated hospitals; he hated being a patient. Being a patient meant he was unwell; he was injured. He was weak.
Gavin was anything but weak and he felt humiliated having to wear this unflattering hospital gown. But as he went to move, he winced in pain.
His chest was killing him.
He looked down and saw the white bandages that wrapped his body and his brows furrowed together.
Memories of last night were foggy, but he vaguely remembers encountering his blackmailer.
Holy Hell!
The blackmailer was Jessie!
Gavin’s memory started flooding back to him the more he was awake.
“Where’s our mate?” Was the first thing Roman asked as he too woke up from a long slumber.
That was a good question; Gavin remembered seeing that silver dagger flying towards Erin and then he watched her shift. But he hopefully got to her first…
He paused his thought because jumping in front of her and blocking her from the dagger was the last thing he remembered.
He looked down at his chest again and the realization of what happened dawned on him.
“I almost got myself killed,” he muttered. “She better be okay.”
“Alpha Gavin, you finally woke up,” a nurse said as she opened the door. “You’ve been here for the last 14 or so hours. I’m so glad you woke up. That means you are healing nicely. You had quite the injury. But it’s nothing a strong Alpha like you can’t heal from,” she chuckled, making Gavin roll his eyes.
“Have I been here alone this whole time?”
“Oh, goddess, of course not. You’ve had lots of visitors. Your Beta should be returning shortly as well.”
As if on cue, Beta Seth came into the room, and he looked shocked to see that Gavin was awake.
“Welcome back to the land of the living, Alpha,” Seth said with a broad smile.
The nurse excused herself, leaving Gavin and Seth alone.
“Has Erin been here?” Gavin found himself asking Seth right away.
Seth frowned, narrowing his eyes at Gavin.
“She was here at the beginning. She came here in the helicopter with you. She didn’t want to leave your side until you went into surgery,” Seth explained. “Once you got out and we were told you would recover just fine, she left, and I haven’t seen her since. That was maybe 10 hours ago.”
“Where’s my phone?” Gavin asked fiercely. “Give me my phone.” This time in a demanding tone.
Beta Seth quickly got Gavin’s phone and handed it to him.
Scrolling through all these messages, he was disappointed that there was none from Erin.
What could she be doing right now?
“It could be Moonshadow related,” Roman suggested.
That’s right…
Erin was part of the Moonshadow organization; it was something she had lied to Gavin about. He was admittedly hurt by her secrecy, but he couldn’t blame her for not telling him.
Gavin vaguely remembered seeing Jessie falling off the roof, but he remembered still sensing the fact that she was still alive.
Maybe Erin was searching for her.
“Your blackmailer should no longer be an issue. Now that we know she’s actually the leader of the Slayers and her actual identity, it’ll be easier to keep your family protected. You could let them out of the safehouses.”
The thought crossed his mind and of course, he has every intention of letting them return home. But the thought of Jessie still out there and free left an unsettled feeling in the pit of his stomach.
His parents spent so long protecting him, now it was his turn to protect them. As long as Gavin still had abilities and Jessie was still alive… his family was still in danger.
“No,” Gavin said with finality in his tone. “Keep them there for the time being.”
