Chapter 15

Erin’s POV

Erin watched Henry leave feeling nothing but dread. If something were to happen to him on this mission, she would never forgive herself. She had abandoned her partner completely, forcing him to fight for the Moonshadow organization by himself.

She was once a trusted member of Moonshadow, but she quit after her “incident.” She couldn’t even think about returning to them, regardless how badly Henry wanted her to.

She just wanted to live a simple life and pretend that none of her past had ever happened. She wanted to live a happy and normal life with her husband.

But even Henry wasn’t simple, unlike how he portrayed himself. Although he was great at playing the life of simple; he only did this for her because it was what she requested. She needed to keep the act of a simple life and Henry agreed to help her in any way he could.

Externally, he is a lawyer. He’s rich, gentle, and elegant. He appears as if he wouldn’t hurt a fly.

But on the inside, he was dangerous and powerful when he needed to be. He fought hard for Moonshadow to keep our world safe. I fought alongside him for many years as his trusted partner.

He makes it hard for people to believe that he would be capable of killing someone. That was all part of his disguise though.

I felt a deep sense of guilt as I thought about my abandonment of not only the Moonshadow organization but also my partner. My husband.

I clenched my fists and tried to control myself from thinking about it. I shook my head, shaking the thoughts out of my mind as I finished dressing in my waitress uniform and headed to work.

Even at work, I found myself distracted. Every time the door chime went off, I would freeze, thinking it was Gavin returning yet again to have a little more fun. There was a part of me that wanted him too. But a bigger part of me knew that it couldn’t happen again.

However, when I wasn’t thinking about Gavin, I was thinking about Henry. Thinking about how he was fighting terrorists who endanger ordinary people, and I wasn’t there to help him. Thinking about how I left him completely because I was too weak and selfish to continue my mission.

My heart ached at the very thought of it.

Regardless of what I thought about at that moment, my heart will forever ache.

“Why do you look so lost?” Kelsey asked, raising her brows.

I realized I had been washing the same spot on this table for a long while.

“I didn’t sleep that well,” I tell her.

She kept a frown on her face, but she didn’t ask me any more questions.

The television was playing loudly, once again, from across the restaurant. The waitresses were all looking at the beautiful Susanna that appeared on the screen. It was only her that was on the screen though; I found it odd that Gavin wasn’t anywhere in sight.

She had a big diamond ring on her hand that she was showing off to the camera. Her eyes were large and filled with life; I could see just how excited she was.

“Oh, my goddess!” One of the waitresses cooed. “It’s their official engagement announcement!”

This was a re-run; the time of this broadcasting was late last night. How could he tell me he loved me one hour and then get engaged the next?

The thought was making me feel sick; I had to look away from the television before I lost control of my wolf entirely.

“Awe does it make you sad?” Ella asked from across the room. “Is Gavin’s favorite waitress jealous?”

“Jealous of what?” I asked, returning to my duties. “I’m happy for him. Maybe now he can leave me alone.”

“Don’t act like you hate his attention,” she laughed with the others. “We know you eat it up. Playing that little fantasy in your mind that he could have been yours.”

I kept my eyes on her as pressed my lips together.

“I am a married woman. I love my husband very much. What part of that don’t you understand?” I snapped.

She blinked a few times at me before rolling her eyes and turning her attention to her own tasks. I sighed, staring back at the TV. Susanna was speaking to the press about how excited she was to be engaged to the tough Alpha she had claimed as her own.

Though it was strange that Gavin wasn’t there to share in her glory about their engagement. If this was an engagement announcement, you’d think he’d want to be there with her.

I shook my head and went back to my job.

A half-hour later, I heard the door chime. This time, I didn’t look to see who it was. But I felt a hand on my shoulder, and I turned around to see Kelsey standing before me.

She looked wary; her eyes were wide as she spoke.

“Uh… Erin. You have a visitor,” she said, keeping her tone low.

My heart fell into my stomach; Gavin decided to return I’m assuming. I peeked behind her, expecting to see Gavin standing at the doorway, but instead, sitting at the table, I saw Susanna.

Kelsey had gotten her a cup of coffee while she waited.

A knot tightened in my stomach, and I thought for a moment that I was going to throw up on the spot.

What was she doing here?

“Just keep yourself calm,” Emily breathed from within me. “You don’t know what she’s here for. It could be nothing.”

“There’s only one reason why she would be here,” I said in return. “She must know what happened between Gavin and me.”

“Don’t jump to such conclusions,” Emily scolded.

I glanced at Kelsey who was still looking at me with worried eyes.

“Are you okay?” She asked.

I nodded, forcing a smile on my face.

“Yes, I’ll be right back,” I say, walking around her and to Susanna’s table.

She was intimidatingly beautiful.

She was gazing out the window, sitting with her fingers entwined together and her long flawless legs crossed over one another.

She wore a loose-fitted pink dress and her long hair was pulled back and out of her face, clipped together with a ruby barrette.

As I approached her table, she peered up at me.

Susanna, with her exquisite makeup, examined me with contemptuous and disdainful eyes.

“You must be Erin,” she said, her tone icy.

I nodded my head, unsure of what else to say. I was feeling an overwhelming sense of pure nerves rising through my body.

She glanced at the chair in front of her.

“Sit,” she ordered coldly.

I was hesitant for a moment, but I eventually sat down.

As I sat, I glanced down at her hand and saw that the ring she once wore in the broadcast was gone. I rose my brows, meeting her eyes.

“What can I do for you?” I asked.

“You can answer my question,” she said, leaning closer to me from across the table.

I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat before speaking again.

“What question might that be?” I dared to ask.

“Don’t act stupid, bitch,” she sneered. “Tell me, how did you seduce my fiancé, Gavin, in bed?”
