Chapter 23
Gavin’s POV
“What do you mean she has no memory of our breakup?” Gavin asked furiously as he sat in his office.
Beta Seth sat nervously in one of the chairs in front of Gavin’s desk.
“I mean, she called to talk about your engagement. She was surprised when I said you two broke up and shouldn’t have much of anything to talk about.”
That wasn’t making any sense. They had a clear conversation the other day when Gavin took back the engagement ring that Susanna stole. He told her that their relationship was over and she needed to respect that.
“Maybe this is a good thing,” Seth suggested, leaning forward in his chair. “Alpha, you need to have the best possible Luna for the Alpha convention. You know this. Susanna is the best. She’s already respected and well-liked around the kingdom. I think it’s best that you move forward with her.”
Gavin understood where his Beta was coming from; this had nothing to do with love and everything to do with his position as Alpha. This was about his career. But still, he couldn’t help but think about Erin. She was the one that he wanted more than anything.
She broke his heart when they were young and he never thought that he would want her again. He thought that he was over her entirely, but that proved to be a lie. He couldn’t get her out of his mind. He wanted to be with her and only her.
He wished that she could be his luna. Especially now that he knows that Erin and Henry aren’t actually married. They are just playing house, which was incredibly confusing.
“Alpha?” Seth said, trying to get his attention.
Gavin glanced at Seth.
“I want you to find out what you can about Erin and Henry’s marriage. Find out why they aren’t actually married and why they are just pretending,” Gavin ordered, leaning back in his seat.
Seth couldn’t help but roll his eyes; something he was trying to hide from Gavin, but Gavin saw it right away.
“Is there a problem, Beta?” Gavin asked; a threat oozing through his tone.
Seth stood up.
“No, sir,” he muttered before turning away. Before he reached the door, he paused though. “However, I don’t think you should be meddling with Erin’s marriage. You should be trying to reconcile with Susanna. If you know what was good for you.”
“I’ll tell you what; considering it means so much to you, invite Susanna over and I will speak to her. But only if you agree to find out information about Erin and Henry’s marriage.”
There was a long pause as Seth thought about the offer.
He eventually sighed, looking defeated.
“Deal.”
…
It didn’t take long for Susanna to get there; Gavin figured as soon as Seth called her, she would be on her way.
She ran into his office with a large frown on her face; her bottom lip was puffed outward, and tears were filling her eyes.
“What is going on?” She demanded to know as soon as she entered his office. Her arms were folded across her chest, and she looked insanely frightened. “I’m hearing that our engagement ended. I hardly even remember it beginning.”
“What do you mean you hardly remember it beginning?” Gavin asked, peering up at her from his desk and narrowing his eyes. “What exactly do you remember?”
“I faintly remember announcing an engagement and having a ring on my hand… but the ring is gone. Has it been a dream?”
He glanced at her hand before briefly meeting her eyes.
“Yes,” he said casually. “What else do you think you remember?”
“So, the engagement never happened? Why do I feel as if it had? Why did the Beta say it ended?”
“He must have been confused,” Gavin said. “Has anything else strange happened?”
She thought about it for a moment, wiping the remaining tears that strayed from her eyes, off her face.
“Yes,” she said, thoughtfully. “I remember I was standing outside of a mediocre restaurant. I’m not sure why I was there though.”
He rose his brows at her words.
It must have been Erin’s restaurant. What was she doing there?
“Did you speak to anybody?”
“I don’t know,” she breathed, thinking harder about it. “I just remember standing in the parking lot with my bodyguards. We were all very confused as to how we got there and why we were there.”
“None of you remember?”
She shook her head, a timid frown on her face.
“I see,” Gavin breathed, leaning back in his seat.
This was making more sense; she must have gone to the restaurant and caused a scene in front of Erin. Maybe either Erin or Henry used their powers and made Susanna forget the recent events.
That’s the only thing that made sense.
“So, we were never engaged?” Susanna asked, disappointment crossing her features.
Gavin stared around her face for a short while before turning back to his computer.
“I’m sorry, but no we weren’t. I apologize for any confusion you might have. If you’d like I can call the local doctors and see if they can give you a scan,” Gavin offered.
She was quiet for a moment as she processed that; she scratched her head, confusion clear on her face.
“That might be a good idea,” she finally said after a long pause. “I’m feeling rather odd…”
He glanced at her once more, a compassionate look in his eyes.
“Again, I’m sorry, Susanna. I’ll call you in the morning. Get some rest. Would you like Beta Seth to accompany you home.”
After another moment of silence, she finally shook her head, giving him a sweet smile.
“No, darling. I’ll be fine. It must have just been a crazy dream that’s still rattling my mind,” she said, shaking her head as if she was shaking the thoughts from her brain. “I’m just a little frazzled. I will speak with you in the morning.”
Without another word, she turned and left.
…
Henry’s POV
To Henry, it was obvious that Gavin was involved with the recent murders in one way or another. Erin had trusted Henry to protect her and help her as her partner and that’s exactly what he wanted to do.
He might not fully have Erin’s heart, but he was going to stop at nothing to make sure that Erin knew Gavin’s true colors.
Henry didn’t like seeing Erin so upset over the matter, but he needed to do what was best for his family. He needed to make sure that she stayed away from Gavin.
He grabbed his phone and brought up the number to the headquarters. Erin was fast asleep in their shared bedroom and Henry occupied the living room. He sat on the couch, staring at his phone for a long while before he took the step and called headquarters.
“You shouldn’t be calling this number, Henry. You know the rules,” his boss said on the other end.
“I know, but this is an emergency. It can’t wait any longer.”
“Then you should be coming here and not calling. If someone were to hear you—”
“I’m in a safe location; I can’t get there right now without my wife being suspicious. But this can’t wait.”
There was a long pause on the other end.
“What is it? Make it fast.”
“It’s about Alpha Gavin Pierce…” Henry began. “He has abilities that are stronger than those I had ever encountered. I think he might be dangerous. I think he’s part of the killer organization.”
