Chapter 25
Henry’s POV
In order to get to headquarters, Henry would need the moonstone necklace that was given to him when he first joined. It was the only way to open the portal to get to the secret base they kept the headquarters.
The headquarters has been kept secret for decades and only members had access to it. Both Henry and Erin held special moonstone necklaces so they could access the gate, but Erin had long ago locked hers away.
One of the rules of the organization was that nobody was allowed to call the headquarters phone when they are in a different realm. A rule that Henry had broken.
For good reason of course. He couldn’t just escape to the headquarters without worrying Erin.
At least not last night.
As he lay awake, the sun began to rise and peer through the closed curtains of the small room he shared with his fake wife. He peered over at her; tossing and turning as she often does every night.
He knew what she was dreaming of; it was the same thing almost every night. She would murmur Jessie’s name; her best friend who had died three years ago. He could feel the pain behind her broken words and the small sob that escaped her lips. It hurt him to see her so hurt; it was the very reason she swore away from the organization.
Then another name would escape her lips and it would make Henry furious; Gavin.
The vein of his existence. He shouldn’t let Gavin bother him as much as he should. But hearing his name coming out of her mouth was enough to drive any wolf crazy. Especially a wolf who was hopelessly in love with her.
Henry wasn’t stupid; he knew exactly how Erin felt for him and it wasn’t nearly as much as he felt for her. He knew that Gavin Pierce will forever be her one and only love. But that didn’t mean he was ever going to give up.
He loved Erin more than anything and he knew that Gavin was no good and certainly wasn’t good enough for her.
It would only be a matter of time before Erin started to see that as well.
“Come to the headquarters and we can discuss this in person, Henry,” his boss from the Moonstone organization had said on the phone the night before.
He was planning on going in the morning; he already called the office and canceled his appointment for today. They were upset, but it’s nothing a little mind trick won’t take care of once he returned.
The only thing he was sorry about at that moment was lying to Erin.
He reached into his lockbox that he kept on his nightstand and pulled out a blue and purple swirling pendant with a shimmering golden chain, long enough to put around his neck with ease.
He waited until he was outside before placing the pendant around his neck. He watched as the portal opened before him. He had to keep the necklace on him while he was in this realm or else he would be pushed out.
Going through the portal was like walking through a door. As soon as he was on the other side, the portal closed behind him, disappearing from their land and engulfing him in a new world. A world where the sky was purple, and the ground was blue It was like he was inside of the moonstone pendant.
The air was warm and difficult to breathe. The portal brought him to a woodland area just outside the giant headquarters building. He could see the building in the distance and he grew annoyed that he had to walk to reach the front entrance.
Where the portal dropped him off was never the same area. Sometimes it brought him close to the building, sometimes it didn’t.
He was met at the gate by a tall gentleman in a dark suit. He had a serious look in his dark eyes and he didn’t look like he’s smiled in his lifetime.
Henry wasn’t new though and knew this gentleman to be the head guard; the man who kept watch over the headquarters and made sure no unwanted visitors entered.
Those who try to do harm to the Moonshadow organization will often find ways into this realm. If they weren’t born in this realm and needed a necklace to access it, they could steal a necklace to get in.
The guard’s job was to keep those unwanted guests away and send them back to where they came from.
Despite coming here often, Henry still had to prove, with an ID that he was who he said he was.
Henry pulled out his ID without being told to; it was an enchanted ID. The contents on the ID were only visible if held by the real owner of the ID.
Of course, the ID was created by the Moonshadow organization.
The guard stepped aside once he looked at the ID and allowed Henry into the front doors.
“Henry, thank you for coming in,” his Boss, Theo, said once Henry entered. “Calling us yesterday was incredibly stupid. You should have just come here instead of jeopardizing everything we have.”
“I made sure nobody was around. Nobody would have tracked that call,” Henry said in return. “It was an emergency.”
They went toward a back room that lead into Theo’s office. Theo leaned against his desk with his arms folded across his chest; the same stance he always did whenever he was about to scold Henry.
“Look, I know I wasn’t supposed to call as I did, and for that, I apologize. But Gavin Pierce is incredibly dangerous…”
“He’s also incredibly powerful, Henry,” Theo said, shaking his head. “I don’t know what you think we can do with this information.”
“We are the Moonshadow organization. We serve and protect against those like Gavin Pierce.”
“What makes you think Alpha Gavin is dangerous?”
“How can he not be?” Henry asked, raising his brows. “He has endless abilities it seems. Now innocent people are turning up dead. It’s not a coincidence.”
“Okay, look. I’m going to level with you. If we go after guys like Gavin, then we will be hunted even more than we already are. Gavin has connections far greater than you can comprehend and it’s not something we should meddle with,” Theo warmed with a headshake. “Besides, Gavin is an Alpha. He wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize his pack.”
“So, what does that mean? You don’t want to look into it?” Henry asked, disbelief in his tone.
There was a moment of pause while Theo thought about it; then he sighed.
“If you knew what was good for you, you’d drop it. I don’t want you to bring this nonsense to our organization. Do you understand, Henry?”
“No…” Henry shot up, fury rising through him. “I don’t understand.”
“It’s either that or you won’t be welcomed back here.”
“You can’t be serious, Theo.”
“I’m very serious,” Theo said, taking a step closer to him; his eyes darkened as he poured his gaze into Henrys. “Stand down; don’t fuck with Gavin Pierce.”
